Hi,

I have a late 2008 Disco 3 with around 80k. Next year it will get the 7 year service - belts etc. The car is used well, often all 7 seats, and I need to keep that capacity for around another 2 years or so.... Read more

My local "member of the fed of auto transmission engineers", with which I have no connection other than being a customer, tells me that the auto transmission oil should be changed (to the extent that it can be) every 50K miles. This works well for me.

And no doubt for him, too. ...

Currently considering purchasing either a 1.25 petrol Rio or 1.4 petrol Ceed, I really prefer petrol units over diesel, can anyone confirm if both the engines are chain driven? Do any of these vehicles have a duel mass fly wheel? Does anyone have any feedback as to which overall is the better purchase for mixed driving around town with a fair number of long motorway runs. I am looking to keep the car a very long time 10 years plus and will likely run the vehicle for 150k miles plus. Read more

Thanks for all the input, having test drove both cars I found them to be a rewarding and really nice drive, liked the long gearing of the Ceed especially. Build quality on both of them seems to be above many manufacturers. Looking at the way they are put together it seems that getting a 150k out of either should be no problem.

Hi. I have a face lift my Honda Crv 2006. Last of the square shape model.

The vehicle has done 113k. Maticulously maintained. However I'm experiencing a vibration / wobble at a speed range of 15-30 mph. I've swapped wheels from from to back on both sides with no effect to the problem. Both front driveshafts have been refurbished and the intermediate (half shaft) has had the bearing changed. Both from wheel bearings are fine. Front discs and pads have been renewed. All front end bushes look ok. As does the engine mounts. The car has been raised off the ground and run to experience the vibration. On result of this, what was evident was the front right wheel was rotating slightly oval shape. But almost all drive train parts have been replaced. ... Read more

For some reason you seem very sure its the shaft, usually the only problems you get with shafts is being bent or going out of balance.apart from shearing that is..

the parts I would go for is the bearings that hold it in place, because if they are slightly worn they will throw the shaft out of balance ie wheel bearing or diff bearing that holds the cvj in place, cvj on video had sideways play on it but not certain of Honda limits on that...

I have a 318i Sport Plus fitted with run flat tyres on 18inch wheels. The tyres have always been fairly noisy, rather as expected but have lasted well ( 31K miles). More recently I have noticed a pronounced drone on smoooth roads between 40-50mph. Dealer says tyre noise, having checked wheel bearings but I am disappointed and this must mean most similar cars have the same problem? Read more

My B class has alloys with OEM Michelin Energy MO fit tyres. My wife's A class has steel rims with Pirelli P4s.

For what is virtually the same car the road noise from the Pirelli is far more noticeable than the Michelins.

Please help. Getting quotes for can belt replacement. I have read that the water pump should also be changed but my local independent garage tell me that on the 2007 model it isn't necessary because its not driven by the pump. They have quoted £195.

My Vauxhall dealer quoted me £259 and then when I mentioned a water pump he said oh yes we always recommend a new pump as it drives thecambelt. He then added £127 to the price. Why he didn't do this with out asking if it is required begs another question.... Read more

Your Focus also has a plastic wheeled belt tensioner!

Aaaarrggh!! I shall listen carefully for signs of failure. Many years ago I heard our old Passat tensioner pulley whining and managed to change it before it seized. It was easy to do but difficult to change the belt which looked perfectly OK, so I left it alone. It was still doing its job at 240,000m +. Now that our Focus is apparently worth about the price of a cambelt change I can afford the interesting gamble to see how long it lasts. Perhaps my ancient belt dressing has provided a protective coat for the plastic. Anyway, Ford has never to my knowledge reduced the interval from 10yrs/100,000m for this engine so I think the odds of surviving much longer are good, especially with a careful driver and a protective autobox.

Recomended by HJ as VAG's finest diesel engine which was dicontinued as they could not get it to meet Enviromnmental standards.

But how can I be sure that it does not have a DPF? Read more

I had an A6 estate with the 2.5 (155 bhp, possibly) and a 6 speed manual box many years ago (W reg, i think). Sold it with 185k on the clock, and it was rock solid from day 1 up until the day it went. And oh my, when you put your foot down, it certainly did go.

I've also had a 2.7 on the 'new shape' A6 estate on a 05/55 plate. Performance-wise, it made the 2.5 look like it was going backwards, but I was never hugely enamoured with the car as a package. It was all just a bit bloated, in my opinion. I had that for 2 years, did 70k in it, and it never went wrong at all....

I've owned an 11 plate Micra for seven months which has been excellent small car, until now, when the clutch has failed at 24,000 miles. Is this common as I have had a clutch fail at 54,000 miles, which is expected, but not 24,000?. It's not that I ride the clutch and also try to use it as little as possible in heavy traffic.

Also I am a little concerned about the clutch being repaired on an extended warranty. The dealer states that this is a grey area, but the Nissan Cared 4 warranty states that I should only pay for the friction materials. I am a bit miffed as I could be forking out a considerable bill on Monday when the clutch is replaced if the dealer decides it's normal wear and tear and I have to pay the full amount, and I think this is unfair as the clutch has failes prematurely.... Dealer has checked the clutch and the gearbox, and has found no leaks or mechanical damage, but will pay half the cost of the replacement as a goodwill gesture.

Hi, has any one bought one of the basic code scanners off e-bay and do that actually work. I need to find out what keeps making the mil light flashing on my Sharan. It happens on and off and no particulate pattern to it. Is it worth buying one of these or just a waste of money. Thank's for any comments. Sparky 100

Flashing glowplug light on 1.9 tdi vag models including sharan, commonly caused by a dicky brake light switch located on pedal. Its a dual device, one switch operates the brake lighyt, and the other is used by the ecu to cancel cruise control, possibly other function. If the two switches disagree, it throws a fault that is indicated by the glow plug light flashing. There is some adjustment possible, but mostly a new switch is required. The fault is self cancelling.

Check your brake lights work when the light is flashing...

A potential buyer of my son's car has communicated with him as per copy email below. It would appear that he in somewhere on the Continent and I seem to recall reading that it is not unusual for people in the EU to buy second hand cars from the UK because they can sell them at a considerable profit. However, is there a risk that my son could end up with no car and no money either?

So what is a private plate on a car. Do explain AS?

What do you mean by 'private plate'?

If it's one of the really old plates where there is no age identifier (e.g. ABC 123) that's fine because the plate is older than the car....
