Would you sell a car to this man? - Henry the 9th

A potential buyer of my son's car has communicated with him as per copy email below. It would appear that he in somewhere on the Continent and I seem to recall reading that it is not unusual for people in the EU to buy second hand cars from the UK because they can sell them at a considerable profit. However, is there a risk that my son could end up with no car and no money either?

"I'd like to know the rock bottom price you willing to take and i will be paying by PayPal as it is attached to my bank account more so its safe and secure way to make payment on eBay. I hope you accept my payment method? If you do,can you just send me the email you associated with your paypal account (Paypal ID) in order to make the payment now, about the collection; have got a private courier that will come for the collection as soon as you confirm the payment via paypal so no shipping included and if you dont have a paypal account, you can easily go to www.paypal.com/" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">www.paypal.com and sign up. its very easy. I await your reply asap."

SCAM. SCAM. SCAM. SCAM

Paypal can be reversed, up to a couple of weeks later. So he pays, your son hands over the car, and then he reverses the paypal. Your son has no money, and no car.

Tell them it is not acceptable. Either cash on collection, or no deal.

Many thanks RobJP. I was not aware of the reversal facility on PayPal but nevertheless felt uneasy about this offer to purchase.

I was sent several of this type e`mail when I was selling my civic last january, but because of the amount of people that did not show and this type of scam,

even phone calls offering cheque payment of twice what I was selling car for, paying them the difference, and they would send someone to collect the car, I decided to sell to wbac I only got £250 less than asking price so it wasnt too bad

I used to always sell cars privately but it is getting worse especially if your selling something cheaper. The number of idiots who ring dont turn up try to knock you down on the phone and ofcourse the outright scams. I find the best policy is to weed them out on the phone, do not offer to show your car to the following: anyone who cannot speak good english, anyone who sounds like a jack the lad, anyone who talks about price before even asking about the car. This should reduce the tyre kickers. Ideally wait until a nice middle class mum phones up looking for a car for her daughter. Use your instinct if the caller sounds iffy just tell them the car is no longer available. The problem is these days most people above the poverty line are buying new cars on PCP, this only leaves the weird and desperate for the sub £3k stuff.

The best one I had lately was someone who said they definitely wanted the car and if I drove it to them (20 miles away) they'd give me the cash. As if! End up in a strange town with a pocketful of dosh and no transport?

Strangely, they declined my offer to deliver it after they'd sent me the cash.
