Anyone know what happens to dealer spare parts when they become uneconomical to keep?

In the motorbike world, places like David Silver buy up old stock and have a good business doing so, but as there are more parts to cars this might not be viable.... Read more

Anyone know what happens to dealer spare parts when they become uneconomical to keep?

I know what happens at an importer. When the computer jockey with the crisp white shirt and the filofax who was the UK parts manager decided that parts that have been in stock too long, the parts get thrown in a skip and scrapped....

I have found 2 well cared for cars, a passat estate manual 2.0 SE 06 £5900 and a merc C200 est auto 55 plate £6700. I like them both but which car will give me the least trouble, the passat is low mileage 71000 and the mercedes has 81000 miles. We have very tall children.

There's a danger of generalisation here because I'm sure you'd be able to find examples of rubbish service from non German brands. My experience with VW dealers over nealy 20 years has been both good and bad. I bought my first VW from a no longer existing dealer in north Leeds who gave fantastic personal service. Similarly when I bought from Bradford and also from my current dealer in Doncaster. Leeds on the other hand didn't want to know when I bought my current Golf GTi.

Servicing and repairs are where VW dealers have been a bit iffy and up and down. However, again, my current dealer in Donny have looked after my car for 5 years and have been excellent. ...

The air distribution switch will only send the air to the windscreen vents regardless of its position.

I know it is a vacuum operated system on this car and I have looked up previous posts on this subject. However, I still do not fully understand either how it works or how to diagnose the problem. ... Read more

It is going to be another 10 days or so before I can get back to solving this.

HI, i am a part time motor sole dealer and i sold a car to a woman who after two months sent me a letter saying she had been onto trading standards who told her she could reject the car i sold to her for a full refund...

on the grounds that the exhaust was leaking to a point where driving it made her ill and so "not fit for porpose". Her rejection letter said that she paid some one £100 to fix the exhaust but bacause there was a fault she wanted a refund (the car was a 16 year old clio sold for £450 with full MOT), her letter stated that she had already paid £100 to fix the exhaust so it must now be ok and fit for purpose so a full refund would not be expected but i offered £50 as a good will gesture, even though on trading standards web site it states you should take into account the age and wear and tear of a car (exhaust systems are considered wear and tear items)... After 5/6 weeks of a crunching reverse gear my 107 was diagnosed by main Peugeot dealer as needing a new clutch. £540 lighter, there are times now when the car makes exactly the same sound (although not as often). Been back in secveral times.........I have now been assured by the main dealer and Peugeot UK that this is normal for a 107, and they all make that sort of sound.

Prior to the problem occurring the car had a consistently silent gear change..... Read more

£500 sounds a lot for a couple of O2 sensors. You could probably get the same parts elsewhere not in a Toyota box for half the price.

I except the heater circuits have gone and there will be little or not effect on the car apart from the 30 seconds after a cold start....
