Beware of Jags as the miles mount, colleague has had some eye watering bills, one at around the 90odd k mark when his XF needed cambelt plus service plus 'cat' (DPF?) over £2k that bill alone.

Can only agree with Alby here, MB's a good bet all considered, but the Lexus hybrid mentioned above warrants consideration too, very rapid the GS450h too.

Just collected my young son from school. I was driving the right way down a narrow one way road when a car came out of a small garage and drove head first into me. Substantial damage to my car which is 12 year old. I have had it from new and only done 48,000 miles. I am a disabled driver and only do school and frequent hospital runs.

Driver blamed me for not seeing him. He said he gestured for me to stop but i didnt even see him. Police gave him a motor ticket for driving wrong way. I went to hospital because of neck, shoulder and back pain. Doctor prescribed strong painkillers. I'm still in a lot of pain.... Read more

His attitude alone would ensure that i would behave out of character, in that i would claim as much as i could possibly manage from this neanderthal, where if the chap had been human, polite and reasonable, i would try to mitigate all costs as much as possible.

My remote luggage compartment release has all of sudden stopped working. There is some noise when pressing the button but other than that no joy. Would rather try and fix my self. Any body had any experience with this particular fault? Any links to a repairs manual for this model would also be helpful. Thanks. Read more

Hi, I have Dec 2006 R56 Mini Cooper. Recently I had to replace Window Regulator on Driver Side. However since it has been replaced neither of the electric mirrors work. I have checked all fuses and all appear ok. I have also replaced mirror adjusting switch in driver's door but still no joy. I did notice at the time that the bulb on bottom of driver door had also blown. That bulb has been replaced but it still doesn't light and wing mirrors still not working. Concerned as MOT due next month. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. The regulator came from a breakers merchant and window works fine. Read more

The electric adjust part of the mirror is not an mot test item,so no problem there. It may be possible that the wiring to the mirror circuit was damaged when the window reg was replaced. Also check the wiring harness where it passes from the door pillar to the door through the rubber boot.

Until recently, French shops were virtually giving away breath testers, now they don't even bother to stock them. Don't worry about it.

I am in need of a 5 door car due to a new baby; I have an 2007 Audio A3 TDI 2.0 Sport in good general condition, 1 year MOT and just been serviced which I will trade in. It has done 70k miles

I am looking at a 2007 BMW 3 Series 318D 2.0 Estate which is up for £7000 from a main dealer. Seems it was serviced in April at the same milage it is now so one assumes it's been on the books for a while. This has done 83k miles... Read more

Monday's Times reports a 'survey' (apparently from Warranty Direct) showing that the reliability of French cars is second only to Japanese, followed by S.Korea, US, Swedish, German, Italian and guess-who. They did admit that Nissan, Honda and Mini were not classed as British.

Anyhow, what price Peugeot and Renault, given the stick wielded by some regulars on this forum? :-) Read more

I'm not aware whether the AA and RAC publish statistics for the breakdowns that they attend in the UK - if not, why not?

ADAC always seem to be held as more trustworthy than most, and yet, following Getafix's link, I'm a little suspicious of how brilliantly the Audi A3, BMW 1, Merc A & B, and VW Caddy and Golf do in the small-middle-class, just as I'm also always suspicious how Continental tyres nearly always come top in the tyre tests (funnily enough, usually conducted at Continental's test track)....
