I spent part of this afternoon fiddling about with Mrs SDA's '54 reg. Verso. It's the first time for a long while that it's been necessary to drop the rear seats and I'd almost forgotten how you have to do it and what an enormous space results. Over 2000 litres of boot space in a relatively small vehicle with a 1.3 litre engine and a 'proper' torque converter autobox.

It got me thinking that we should be thinking about a replacement, but I can't think of anything that comes vaguely close. Bigger car/vans with similar capacities, but 1.6 litre engines and autoboxes that are dire. The Verso design hails from nearly 20 years ago and I thought engines and transmissions had got better in those two decades, but it appears they've got worse.... Read more

It's actually 2160 litres and MY Cee'd SW is 1664 litres. There's not many cars can beat it, a Galaxy at 2325, a Grand Picasso at 2181, a Santa Fe at 2213 and the current Berlingo at 3000 litres are some.

As you say SP it's down to the height as the second boot measurement is always taken to the roofline. As I posted earlier we managed to fit a 2ft plus high dog crate with a 15inch suitcase on top with no problem with the rear seats folded away under the front seats.

The latest road test by David Ross makes much of the Scout's towing capabilities. Sure Skoda are happy to publicise that it'll pull 2000kg and with a relatively light chassis and plenty of oomph coupled with 4WD it sounds as if it should be great.

Think again however.... Read more

ng a fully loaded Scout diesel as a comparator at 2096kg towing 2000kg of van means you'd be operating at 96%. Compare that to my 67% which is the sort of ratio that's safe.

to the Yaris...look to the right in the news column to the revamped Yaris.

Who on earth passed this as fit for production, he or she should be sacked, i thought the latest front end treatment to the Lexus range was bad enough, but now i've seen the front end of this thing.... Read more

I can't think of any Japanese cars that look beautiful, they always look awkward and fussy as though they were designed by a layperson and have to infil every plain area with something or other - odd from the people who brought us of the design principle of zen.

That said, this Yaris looks ok for what it is and better that older models in that it has a bit of 'character' and uniqueness - but then again, I would not be the target market anyway, so maybe they are doing an M&S alienating their existing customers while embarking on a futile attempt to attract new ones?

This is probably a question with an answer like all diesels are the same these days.

But which out of Vauxhalls 1.7 CDTi, Hondas 2.2 CDTi, Fords 1.8 CDTi and VAGs 1.9 TDi is the best for reliability and frugal-ness? Mainly in Focus/Astra size cars.... Read more

The VAG 1.9 diesels are excellent engines with very good fuel economy. The biggest advantage is that they do not have a DPF.
They are not a refined as others but choose carefully and you shouldn't go wrong

Hello,

I have bought a used car today that had no tax. The dealer went to the post office to put six months tax on it but the tax disc received has a date of 31/12/14 on it, which is approximately five and a half months away. The amount of money paid is exactly what it should be for six months.... Read more

Yes you lose out even if it's taxed on the last day of the month. Of course with the demise of the month specific paper disc later this year there is probably no reason the computerised record could not cope with part months but don't hold your breath as this is a nice little earner for the government (or the general taxpayer depending how you look at it!)

Perhaps you should change the engine, this gets hot when it is working. The fuel injection/pump relays are in the engine bay relay box (purple),and they do get warm when operational. If these have been changed and the problem persists, then i would suspect the engine Ecu is faulty.Your code reader logged a fault for fuel relay, but did it actually say replace it?
