I have had a brand new Audi A3 Sportback for about three weeks. It is kept outside and has only done about 250 miles. From day 1, the brake discs have shown signs of yellowy discolouration, such that the front discs now appear almost gold in colour. I assume that this is an oxidation/rust issue, and if so, is it normal and what (if anything) should I be doing about it? Thanks. Read more

We bought a Nissan Micra 02 reg from a local garage as our 2nd car - has all been fine except it won't start easily first thing in the morning or when it's been parked in a multi storey car park all day.

Took it back to the garage and they said it's because we're using the wrong key - the 2nd key will open doors etc but won't start the car. I'm not convinced since it will start after about 30 mins of trying and seems to be a pattern to not start when it's cold? ... Read more

It's possible it's a key problem. Keys are usually coded to the car but thay can go 'bad', happened with my son's Panda - the first key was erratic for a while and now will no longer start the car. If you just get a new key cut but not coded, it won't work.

Your experience suggests that you have a coded second key but it's not reading properly....

I was looking for a large car with low running costs. Is there such thing?

I was thinking a Volvo or BMW or a Mercedes. Any advice would be much appreciated! Read more

Audi A6 should feature on this list. Old ones are especially good value - timeless styling, galvanised body. Choose one with a ZF box, not multitronic. After 15yrs they remain immaculate long after the equivalent Mercs have rotted away or mixed their gearbox oil with the water. I had a 2.8SE for 11yrs - best car I ever had.

I think that for the most part the posts above are pro-VFM rather than anti-BMW.

It may well be that extra quality and 'drivability' will be found to justify the 2-series's price premium (which in fairness isn't all that great) over the competition from less premium badges - I personally will keep an open mind, not least because my car is only 8 months old. ...

I had a Polo with the N/A diesel for a short time in the late 90's. It was not the SDi, it was the earlier engine with few less BHP.

All I will say is the car, although much smaller and presumably lighter than the Octavia was a slug. Overtaking needed careful planning and even then there were some real bottom clenching moments, at times it could be downright dangerous when you hadn't driven it for a while. Since you had to drive it hard to keep up with other traffic the mpg was pretty poor as well, low 40's from memory....
