Mercedes E class - £15k to spend on good exec car, but which one? - ReallyTallTony

Hi,

In replacing my aged E 270 (185k miles) and I have a reasonable budget of £15,000.

Initially I was looking at a BMW 5 series, but having looked around I wonder if there are better choices. I have a teenage family and small dog, commute about 160 miles. (2.5 hours) a day.

So I'm in a real quandary. 5 series? Xj jag? Q5?

Your thoughts would be really appreciated.

Tony

I'm tempted to reply, move closer to work......ooops I have!

Most reviewers cite the 5 series as the best of its type, especially second hand.

Go test drive various cars. With a lot of these, spec can make the difference between a really nice, comfortable car, and one that is quite horrible to drive.

For example, on the BMWs, SE spec with 16 or 17" wheels is a very comfortable, relaxing drive, which I find really enjoyable. M sport with 19" is loud and crashy. I assume it's the same with Merc, and their AMG trim level, or Audi and the S-line trim.

Leftfield choice - Lexus GS450h.

It will certainly be comfortable for that kind of mileage, and may well prove more reliable long term.

1 hr 34 minutes for someone to recomend either a Lexus, Toyota or Honda.

Must be a record.

Your £15,000 will go a lot further if you avoid the 'prestige' makes that you're suggesting. Assuming that with your family and dog you need a hatch or estate, and also need comfort for your long commute, I'd suggest some form of Volvo - they have some of the best seats in the business.

Also look at a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI or a Passat or Octavia 2.0 TDI with the newer common-rail engine.

Get another E Class. Anything else might disappoint after having had one. The four cylinder diesels are quite frugal and bowl along well enough.

Beware of Jags as the miles mount, colleague has had some eye watering bills, one at around the 90odd k mark when his XF needed cambelt plus service plus 'cat' (DPF?) over £2k that bill alone.

Can only agree with Alby here, MB's a good bet all considered, but the Lexus hybrid mentioned above warrants consideration too, very rapid the GS450h too.
