I would be interested in getting views about whether there is a safety issue, either directly or indirectly, when all four wheels needed significant adjustment. BMW dealership had the car in for inspection on two occasions found nothing wrong. Independant tyre specialist analysis identified problem and adjusted accordingly. Dealer is adamant that there was no "safety issue" . I'm not so sure. Read more
Hi All, after a no fault accident my daughter has been told by her insurance company that her car is going to cost too much to repair and declared a write off. No agreement has been made or payment made. This happened at the beginning of last week. Car has been taken off her and is in a compound somewhere. I am going take her there to get the tax disc because it had only just been paid and she wants to reclaim.
As far as I am aware the car is still driveable, big scratch down the nearside and wing mirror missing, and legally hers?? What are her rights? She is likely to end up out of pocket and can’t afford to purchase another car. Prior to settlement can she insist that she is allowed to have the car back? If not what is the process for buying back the damaged vehicle if she wants to after settlement?... Read more
Fair enough, just as well she has settled now.
Thanks....
Fitted in 1999, the Diavia evaporator has perished.
I have been offered one that is:- 300x229x67 but mine is :- 320x175x75 and the larger size won't fit. ... Read more
Do you mean the condenser that fits at the front of the car?The evaporator sits inside the car and requires removal of the dash to install.
The main dealer has attempted to resolve this issue and advised me that they had to use double edged tape on the interior panel to prevent from making a rattling noise. As the noise has re occured I would like to repair the problem myself.
Can anyone advise me of the following?... Read more

At 130,000 miles the automatic gearbox intermittently fails to select 5th. When this happens the LCD display for gear selected in manual (tiptronic) mode remains blank when it should light up and display the gear selected.
Intermittently fails to select 1st so pulling away is like a manual with clutch slip - too many revs.... Read more
This is a well-known company that is even listed on this site as a good garage. If you can suggest a company that can fit a reconditioned gearbox for £1,800, please do. Of course it also has to be close to home, so Berkshire or South Oxfordshire. Thanks for your input but I am asking for suggestions about the faults, rather than a critique of my choice of repairer.
Hi
Is there an equivalent test to 'put into drive, hold brake, press accelerator, watch engine' that can be used for cars with a manual gearbox
Thanks Read more
Thanks for the response , i understood that drive would be first gear but asked the question because I thought that bringing the clutch up on a still car would stall it.
I would like to have my next car on a personal contract. My problem is that I live in France for 6 months each year and 6 months in the UK. Is there a leasing company that will allow me to take the vehicle out of the country for this period? I've not had much success so far. Read more
Thanks for the advice, unfortunately Lings can only do 3 months abroad. I thought I had found the perfect answer ( 2 x 3 months out of the country) at a really good price. Alas, the price rocketed by over 50%, yes 50%, when I disclosed that I was retired.
Looks like buying is the only sensible option....
Hi. My car was manufactured in summer 1973 as per the chassis engine numbers but registered in march 1974.
Do you think i qualify for nil tax ? Read more
As has been said, until April only cars made in 1972 or earlier get free road tax. The date is moving forward 1 year. when it was announced in last years budget it was a one off, but it maybe now a rolling exemption. I certainly hope it will be.
Where you car was made in 1972, but not registered until 1973 a certificate from British Motor Herritage or simelar would support a case for 'historic' status, and free road tax. The situation will be the same for your car after April ...

OK, so Ford don't assemble cars here any more. It does though have very significant facilities producing engines and transmissions to supply the assembly lines elsewhere in Europe.
A lot of R&D is also done here. ...
I am interested in people's views on the importance of time taken to accelerate from 0 to 60. Does it make a real difference in situations such as entering roundabouts, entering motorways ? Is it really significant anyhow ? If so what is the maximum time that is acceptable if there is a safety element ? As with many things I realise it is personal choice and affected by driving ability. Seems to me a pity that manufacturers/dealers don't give this info the same prominence given to toys with little real value.
