Hello, a couple of weeks ago my other half bumped into the car in front at slow speed in crawling traffic. No damage to vehicles, now her employer has received details of a claim for whiplash.

I remember a similar problem in the HJ column in the last year or so where someone was convicted of insurance fraud, does anyone have any details of the case so i can quote this to the other side in the hope they'll come to their senses.... Read more

I think many, possibly the majority, are and agree with the implication of the question. Its not only in cars - too many people will hype up situations to try and legally, or sometimes not, get their grasping hands on more money. This is a very unfortunate development in modern society. Your personal experience is a very clear example of the philosophy of the past - honesty without exaggeration : of course, there are still many people of integrity ( apologies for previous generalisation, not good ). My post was intended, and intentions are not always clear, to present an alternative picture of the situation. The OP, I think, should avoid escalating the situation

Why doesn't somebody make a small car? I was watching TV a few weeks back and somebody was test driving a classic mini. He loved the mini and it looked really good. Good ones sell for over £10,000, so why can't somebody make something similar but with modern stuff. Give it modern rust proofing and a modern 1.0l engine would be economical and give reasonable performance.

Modern cars seem to be too big and too boring. Older models tend to be better IMO. Read more

I like small cars especially in Beginning I used to drive small cars of suzuki and toyota as those were very easy to control.

The glow plug light is a generall warning light normally lights up and puts the car into LHM many reasons for this the most common is the EGR valve followed by the electronic turbo activator if its a later version.

I was searching for new 245/45/17 tyres as my Barum Bravuris 2 are approaching the marker bars. For the same price the newer(?) Barum Bravuris 3HM are available. Anyone have any experience of them? I'm very happy with my current second set of Barum Bravuris 2 except I feel the mileage is not as good as it could be. The original type od Michelins were superb but the Barum is impossible to beat pennies per mile IMHO. The successor Michelins were much poorer for wear.

Done over two thousand miles now. The steering feels imprecise even compared to the previous Barums.Everything else seems OK. So a qualified thumbs up.

The n/s front brake calliper recently seized. The first and only symptoms were juddering at 60-70 when I immediately slowed down to a smooth 30-40. I drove about 10 miles home like this and a further slow 10 miles a few days later to a garage for repair. I was not aware of any real braking effect but the road wheel was much too hot to touch afterwards.

The garage confirmed the seized calliper and also diagnosed a warped disc and (quite correctly) replaced both front discs but I wonder whether it is usual for a disc to be damaged after relatively few miles with a seized calliper. The discs had been replaced 15 months (2-3000 miles) earlier because of pitting. Recent damp and relative lack of use were blamed for the sticking.... Read more

Wouldn't think that amount of heat would do the wheel bearings much good either!

also true. excess heat in the hub can cause the grease to overheat which leads to separation. Bearing failure will surely follow in the future. If the balls (or needles) and races got so hot as to cause 'blueing' then failure will be fairly rapid....

I am currently insured through the Post Office. I rang them to change my insurance to cover a new car which is an avarage family saloon, one size up from my current supermini. I was told that the current underwriter would not underwrite the new car! As it is, this is not a problem as I was transferred to AXA who quoted around £30 more than the premium for my previous car which I am more than happy with.

However, although they can't tell me, I would love to know why they would not cover the change of car. I am pretty much Mr average, driving an average car, in my mid 50's, never made a claim or had a point on my licence in 35 years of driving. What could possibly preclude me from getting cover? As I understand it, there are only a handful of genuine underwriters 'behind the branding', probably insuring each other.
