I have the workshop manual for Hyundai and I am looking at the torque settings for the front brake calipers. It gives the value for the pins as 21.6 ~ 31.4N.m.

Why have they given a range rather than a fixed value? So what should it really be?!?... Read more

The HJ report on the new C-class Merc reports that the new 1.6 diesel engine is supercharged - however, this could be a translation ambiguity by M-B, as supercharging devices can be either mechanically driven, or by a turbine in the exhaust stream ...

while driving along today, the engine on our 2.0 diesel just seem to cut out as though the fuel had been cut off and came to a standstill, all lights are showing on dash and are ok and the engine turns over on starter motor but will not start, these models are camchain and not cambelt so i wouldn't suspect the camchain to break, but who knows!!! Thanks for your help in antisipation.

The diesel xtrail requires the FF changing around 22K miles or two years, from memory, and i'm assuming your engine is the same.

The filter is never changed in a service unless requested, so check your service history, same with brake fluid, but every two years regardless of mileage.

Hi

I want a very reliable car . I know that I am going to choose petrol and auto coz I do around 12000 to 15000 miles a year mostly on motor ways and some city driving.

Don't want to spend on DMf and all diesel issues.

Will keep the keep the car for atleast few years and budget is 7000.

I did look around on auto trader and based on earlier suggestions i checked out honda jazz, Kia ceed, avensis, focus and fiesta.

I have also found some of these cars below and would like your recommendations .

Audi a4 2006 30000 miles for 7000
VW passat 2.0 se fsi. 4dr 2008 model 34000 miles for 6785
VW jetta 1.4 2010 39000 miles for 6979
BMW 3.0 series 318se 2006 model 39000 miles for 7000
BMW 320i se 2006 model 26500 miles for 6895
Toyota avensis 2009 model 65000 miles for 6750
Toyota avensis 2009 model 27000 miles for 7500
Honda jazz 2011 model 1.4ivtec 12000 miles for 6580.
Honda jazz approved 2010 model 13400 miles for 6895
Kia ceed 2011 model 17000 miles for 6500
Kia ceed 2007 model 45000 miles for 4800
Ford fiesta 1.4 zetec 2011model 10000 miles for 7500

The reason I have more saloons listed is because I want to get all the things like buggy in to my car and ride should be codify able on motor ways.

Am I wrong inclining towards the BMW,audi and VW's over Kia, fiesta and jazz.

My order of priorities are reliability, comfort , low maintainence cost, good mpg but I want someone to let me know what would you recommend.

Let me know what car and what mileage should I be looking for with 7000 budget and what would be a good buy even if the car is not on the list.

Thanks much in advance

Jai

One of HJs articles in the Telegraph On-Line 5 Jan 2014, Peugeot 3008 - Petrol or Diesel, advises changing the oil every 10,000 miles or yearly. Does anybody leave that long between oil changes ? - that is, if they want to keep the car.

I've read somewhere that modern oils don't allow the engine to 'bed in' and thus need regular topping up and this will mitigate the lack of changes. At the end of the year the oil must be very dirty. Read more

Perhaps we might have separate debates about brake fluid and tyre rubber, both of which have much increased longevity these days. I sometimes wonder how old tyres are on some low mileage caravans and trailers.

If you need any more info on the engine its almost the same as the late Sierra and similar to the early Mondeo, you should be able to get a Haynes manual for those.

Hi, I am looking at buying a 2009 Ford Mondeo 2009 2.0 TDCI that appears to have a problem when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear which results in a low level crunch sound as the gear engages. All other gear changes are noise free and if the 2nd to 3rd change is carried out very slowly with care it is possible to avoid the crunching. I suspect that this will require the replacement of the 3rd gear syncro however I would welcome any advice from those more knowledgeable than me and also if possible, an idea of what this may cost to have it replaced by a main dealer/local garage ?

Cheers,... Read more
