Ford Mondeo - Ford Mondeo 2009 2.0 TDCi Gearbox Syncromesh probl - vince1

Hi, I am looking at buying a 2009 Ford Mondeo 2009 2.0 TDCI that appears to have a problem when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear which results in a low level crunch sound as the gear engages. All other gear changes are noise free and if the 2nd to 3rd change is carried out very slowly with care it is possible to avoid the crunching. I suspect that this will require the replacement of the 3rd gear syncro however I would welcome any advice from those more knowledgeable than me and also if possible, an idea of what this may cost to have it replaced by a main dealer/local garage ?

Why buy a car with an obvious fault?....unless you are getting it for pennies!

Look for another car that runs sweetly and avoid the trauma and expense of a rebuild or worse still buying a replacment box.

Because the car is otherwise very good with the spec that I am seeking and at an attractive price. Any advice regarding the likely extent of repair required would be appreciated as I am not mechanically mined.Thanks,

In that case, you really do need to go find a better one - this one may have other issues you're simply not mechanically-minded enough even to detect.

If the repairs were cost-effective the current owner would have got them done and sold at a normal price - even at an "attractive price" you can guarantee that the difference won't cover the repair - unless you're an experienced DIYer which you aren't.

Price a new gearbox fitted at Fords add the cost to the price of the car and see if its still a bargain if it is buy it if it isn`t do not.

You could be looking at up to £1000 to have the gearbox replaced, if you are saving that amount of money on it fair enough.

plus clutch whilst it is out

plus labour.

And you want the cost of that plus the car to be lower than the costs of a perfectly good equivalent car. Otherwise why bother?

HOW do you know hwat is cheap?

Cheap to me is half normal retail price...
