Hello, My nephew has just bought a 52 plate Skoda 1.4 petrol estate in Swindon from an independent garage. There was no owners manual but he easilyily got one from ebay. The car runs well at 78000 miles but there are no service records. It is a Gloucester registration and I spent time on the internet yesterday to try to find some service records but had no luck, no one was helpful probably because there was nothing in it financially for them to talk to me. I even phoned my local Skoda dealer here on the Wirral but he said that Skoda garages only hold records on cars they have serviced. I had been hoping for a national record of service performed like Ford and Vauxhall have but Skoda do not do this apparently and I have drawn a complete blank. Has anyone got any thoughts as to how to proceed? Incidentally, I am assuming he must contact the Swindon Skoda dealer for the security codes which are also missing? He needs another key and I think the codes are essential to get this?

Agree.

Invoices are worth more than service book stamps.

I'm trying to buy a set of winter tyres and steel wheels.

I knew my i20's tyres were 185/60/R15s but had problems finding out about the wheel specs. The owners manual was no use and have not heard from Hyundai Customer Services regarding this.... Read more

However, many of these 'Fandango' type, wide wheels don't have sufficient clearance inside the centre line and consequently the aditional width's all on the outside.

I agree that's what they have to do - but it does play havoc with steering and suspension angles.

I checked on oponeo and found a set that say offset 45. I thought I'd double check with RT, who mentioned angles, if I should bother about being a mill out....

Hello,

Went through a flooded road yesterday, because all other routes were cut off, car went through the flood fine, water was only 6 inches deep, but the car stuttered just after the flood, cleared itself, then died at a junction a mile later. Then failed to start at all, it turns over quickly, but wont fire at all. ... Read more

but it shouldn't do that in just 6 inches of water

Unless you're crawling at less than walking speed, the wheels will create waves high enough to immerse the crankshaft pulley which then sprays water everywhere.

Any more than 6" of water is likely to get a standard car starting to float and risking being washed away if there's a cross-current....

Dear Oldtofee and catsdad,

Many thanks for your valuable advice. I emailed Merc Southwest asking them politely to authorize work at my local dealer. I didn't get a reply so I followed it up with a phone call this morning. I have been advised to go back to my local dealer and they'll get in touch with them directly. Hopefully it will be sorted on Monday and I'll post an update here....

I know how some on here "love" led lights, so goodness knows what you'll do with these!

I believe that BMW suggested this a few years ago. Doesn't that iBMW have them?

The laser doesn't shine out of the lamp.
It is just like the current LEDs in that the light is UV and is changed to visible light via a layer of phosphor. In the Laser lights, the UV laser hits a 'nib' of phosphor within the lamp which then becomes the light source for the lens and reflector to modify. The benefit is that more UV can be shone at a smaller peice of phospor as they are no longer limited by the LED form factor and having to use upward of 10 seperate LEDs. ...

Tried to open the bonnet of my son's Fiesta but we hit a problem. The primary release works ok but the safety release cable has broken. I think there should be a handle or something that pops out but that is missing. The bonnet lifts a bit when the main release is pulled and it may be that I can move a lever or use a hook to release the bonnet but I have no idea what to feel for.

Any advice would be appreciated.... Read more

This can happen ('cos I've done it - more than once) if you pull the grill out to change a headlight bulb, say, and then you plug the grill back in without ensuring that the plastic release strap is lying on top of the grill (and not stuck behind it) before closing the bonnet. Just takes a bit of fiddling with a hook of some description to pull the plastic strap back over the top of the grill. You'll do it in a couple of minutes. It might even be possible, there may just be room, with the bonnet slightly up on its primary catch, to lift the grill upwards and out of its slots. But then again, there probably isn't!

Not the end of the world. Not right difficult, just a fiddle. And like me, you'll probable do it again, next time.

I have a Skoda Fabia 1.2 2009. The lights were left on and after a jump start the key fault logo started to flash. I had a car locksmith check everything over. Each individual section was ok but he found the following problems:
Internal Cmu memory error
Shortcut to ground

The key could not be reprogrammed and the CMU could not be read or accessed. The battery was disconnected and the dash removed and checked.

Any help possible cost of repair or fixes thanks.

Anything to do with cars built/sold both sides of the "pond" can be confusing - model years are defined differently and production/sale start/end dates can be way different - sometimes two years difference.

On 28th December I paid 100 deposit for a car. The dealer told me he needed 1 week to get the car ready. After 1 week I went to collect the car. I paid the rest and I got the car. At home I realized there have been some changes to the car, so I went to have the car tested for another MOT. Unfortunately, it did not pass. The dealer changed the tyres which influenced the MOT results. What is more, there is a different problem with the car, not the advisory item given by the garage where the car was tested 5 days before I paid the deposit. I called the garage and they told me they would look into it, but sometimes they would tell people about problems, sometimes they would not. I bought the car based on the MOT. I trusted a service which obviously wasnt delivered at the high standard it should. Plus the battery needs changing. After 1 mile, the light on board was on.

To have the repairs done if nothing else will be discovered to be wrong, I will have to pay around 500 pounds. The garage is to be blamed for the mechanical problems and the dealer for changing car parts. The dealer gave me a useless 3 months warranty whoch does not cover this. He also put a sticker for the ileage, the form for the warranty is wrong. I called him and asked about it. He told me to get a pen and change the wronf details. How can I get this sorted out? I have 10 days to have the repairs done and have the car tested for another MOT. Read more
