I believe that BMW suggested this a few years ago. Doesn't that iBMW have them?

I would be intrigued to know how they propose that this technology is safe; you shouldn't even look at a laser pointer directly, let alone several laser lights pointing right at you as you drive!

The laser doesn't shine out of the lamp.
It is just like the current LEDs in that the light is UV and is changed to visible light via a layer of phosphor. In the Laser lights, the UV laser hits a 'nib' of phosphor within the lamp which then becomes the light source for the lens and reflector to modify. The benefit is that more UV can be shone at a smaller peice of phospor as they are no longer limited by the LED form factor and having to use upward of 10 seperate LEDs.
