re-registering, MOT & tax - boomerang

Hi!

I've just bought a car for my family. I bought if from a reputable trade seller, who, incidentally seemed like a genuinely nice, honest chap, FWIW...

The car was owned from new by a leasing company, and was then bought at auction by my trade seller.

The only problem(s) are...

- I was given the V5C when I bought the car, but the trade seller didn't sign it. We were rushed in completing so I'm wondering if this just got forgotten.

- I notice on the V5C the ownership hasn't changed from the leasing company to the trade seller. HOWEVER, section 9 of the V5C is missing, which I believe is the bit which is filled in when the car is sold into the motor trade? So probably nothing to worry about there.

- The MOT is due to expire. It expires on the 1st of March.
However, I am wondering if I can even get the MOT done if the car is not in my name, i.e. on the V5C?

- The road tax. The car is missing its tax disc, but still has some tax on it according to the DVLA website. It doesn't say specifically when the tax expires, it just says something like "EXPIRING" or "DUE TO EXPIRE". I have asked the seller if he has the tax disc and he says not.

So I have a few administrative problems I need to fix before I can begin to enjoy and use the car. But there seems to me an order in which the above problems need to be resolved.

I have read a few threads where people have said it's not that big a deal that the V5C didn't get signed because if I post it to the DVLA with a covering letter they probably won't be too fussed.

Is there any way I could use a combination of online/post office transactions to mitigate the paperwork being out of date etc? i.e. I was thinking that whilst I don't have a tax disc, the car is apparently taxed, so I could go online to get a new tax disc...problem then is that it would be posted to the seller.

Any/all help much appreciated!

Thanks

The mot can be done at any time .You do not have to be the registered keeper to do this. However ,if you want to retain the expiry date of the existing mot, then the new mot can only be done a maximum of 28 days in advance. As far as the tax is concerned,it has probably been cashed in .This can only be done by the existing registered keeper on the v5c.It is possible to renew the tax and register the car to yourself using the green section 10,at a post office.hth

Didn't that change to a calendar month?

AFAIK it was always a month.

Just take the V5c with a valid insurance certificate & MOT to the Post Office who will issue a new Tax Disc. They will pass the V5c to the DVLA who will send you a new V5 in about 3 weeks.

Only issue with the tax could be if it is changing taxation class such as from disabled where the previous owner has retained the disc but not sent it back so will still show as taxed.
