My sons A4 is a high mileage diesel estate about 10 years old. Recently the car has been difficult to steer, pulling both sides, going where it wants on bumpy roads etc. The tracking has been checked, the tyres are ok and the local garage has had it up on the ramp and cant see any problems. Any ideas gratefully received. Read more

The front suspension links on the A4 are prone to wear and for the inexperienced in these cars, the wear can be difficult to find. I had a Passat 3B V6 4 Motion in a few weeks back (it uses the exact same front suspension) and it was pulling around when driving and braking. We found a tiny amount of wear in the upper front links on both sides. We happen to be doing this the day one of our young mechanics was being assessed by his college tutor and he was fascinated in the tiny amount of wear and subsequently how appallingly difficult it is to get the 100-mm long top link bolt out. We showed him the two methods, the official VW tool which costs hundreds of pounds and the old fashioned tool, the hot spanner! The owner called me yesterday (a brilliant chap whose cars I have been fixing for 25 years) and he said it was perfect and he was very happy.

It's nonsense isn't it? I remember as a lad going out to play straight after breakfast and another drop of liquid wouldn't pass my lips until 5-6pm when I came home from my day of adventure - it didn't do me any harm! People humping their own water supply around as if they are on expedition - just to go to work - makes me laugh out loud!

My girlfriend drives a Vauxhall Astra V reg and she has had this problem since she had the car. If the tank is filled up, the garage pump doesn't automatically stop when the tank is full, instead floods the forecourt.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the cause could be? I'm suspecting its something to do with a gasket or grommet that has perished, but I don't know Vauxhall cars. Read more

Natural gas from shale powering all terrestial forms of transport is coming. The US is a leader already in this innovation and market so we better get our finger out over here. Yesterday the Government lifted the ban on fracking - not too soon - while France maintains it's ban...good. That gives us an edge and a chance to kick start the economy.

The howls of protest are all over the media and airwaves. 5 Live this morning was taken over by the nay sayers and one woman broke into tears causing Nicky Cambell to check later - playing samaritan - that she was alright, . What a lot of tripe.... Read more

Yes, LIQUID petroleum gas. Propane/butane mixture easily condenses under mild pressure to give a high energy density.

Natural gas is mainly Methane. You can compress it, but not to the density of a liquid. And the tank has to be very strong, so it's heavy....

I live in Germany were there are millions of the these vehicles in every form and I have never heard in any of the motoring magazines or from the ADAC of any problem with tyres let alone bent chassis. It would be interesting if you could forward further details of the tyres .

I would have thought that a chinese op-com is the best affordable diagnostic. When I bought mine it was widely available on the auction sites and since then it has been invaluable.
