A few days ago I noticed that the radiator fan was running whenever I started the car - is that normal? It was a frosty morning.
Yesterday I noticed that it took approx 20 miles for the temp gauge to come up to usual running temp - needle almost vertical, moving erratically on the way. Same again today. Can anyone help with a diagnosis? Thanks Read more
The reason I am concerned is that this is a complete change in behaviour. Previously the engine warmed up to full working temp within a couple of miles.
Greetings everyone, as a new member I'm not sure in which forum I should be discussing a problem of vehicle clampers soon to be out on the prowl. Would somebody kindly direct me from this forum. Read more
As I see it your best bet is to get a petition to the council about this. Try to get the majority of the estates residents on board and you should be able to get this stopped. Especially if as another poster says if you use the local media.

The overheating happened twice already. Engine temp from the 12nn position started climing all the way to the red zone and eventually to the max. Before the overheating happened I noticed the rpm was hunting a bit then the a/c started blowing cold air then the compressor seem to cut off even before the cabin was even cold. It went on like these for 8 times maybe even more then I noticed the engine temp gauge was already at 3/4s then to the red zone. I didnt turn off the engine coz I was caught in heavy traffic. As soon as Ithe traffic started to move slowly about 3kph the engine temp slowly went down to 12nn. Also normally when I turn off the engine you can hear the fan sound like a jet engine of a helicopter winding down. I noticed when the first overheating occured I could faintly hear that sound when I turn off the engine. To test if the fan still worked I allowed the engine to idle for 7 minutes without the a/c and the fan would kick in a bit longer than usual. I experimented by re-arranging the 3 relays located in the fusebox near the battery and as soon as I started the engine the fan kicked in already. I turned off the engine and I heard that beautiful jet engine sound. I think it might just be a defective fan relay. The car only has 65k total and its too early for an fan motor to be replaced.. Is it actually overheating or just indicating that it is, are you loosing any water? If you are could be a number of things, faulty thermostat or pump for instance, otherwise it may be just a sensor problem.
I am looking for a (one to two year old) large estate/MPV which is good on fuel economy and capable of carrying a variety of loads (not at once) camping gear, logs for stove, gardening equipment for allotment, labrador. Daily commute is 26 miles round trip most of which is dual carriageway/motorway. Plus, annual holiday invovles trips to sourthern france, so round trip of 3000 miles. Not sure about diesel or petrol. Have 2010 Fabia 1.2 TSi to trade in, very disapointed with fuel economy. Also , have a 1999 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi, which regularly achives 45mpg in town on short trips and 60mpg+ on motorway and still going well at 162K+ miles and so will be keeping this.
I am looking at Skoda Superb estate, VW Passat estate, Renault grand scenic and Citroen Belingo.... Read more
>>>If it were my money, I'd go for the Superb, for it's space and better kit, and I'd be looking at SE or Elegance trim
Agreed, the more space the better. The only thing in its favour I think the Passat looks better proportioned. Assuming you'll have some exposure to the dealers for the remainder of the warranty period I'd choose the friendly Skoda network as IMO VW major on arrogance and wallet lightening over customer satisfaction and service.
Literally per my title.

It's worth looking into the likes of a Kia Picanto type of car and seeing what you can get for your money. From around the year 2008 emissions dropped to below 120 CO2 which means a drop in VED from £120 to £30. Once you've been able to establish emissions/CO2/fuel economy levels you will be better placed to make a judgement on your options.
There is useful data available in the Parkers guide which should help you narrow down your options.
Over in the motoring area, there's a question about what to do about scratches keyed into the side of a car. Reading that prompted me to remember this:
A mate owns (or rather owned) a new Porshe 911. One day, on returning to it after it had been parked in Brighton for several hours, he found that some SOB had scratched the words "F*** OFF" down the offside. Nice, deep scratches into the steel. Much swearing ensues.... Read more
