My 23 year old son was hit by a tree when he was driving recently. The tree was an old tree and when the police came along they said that this happens sometimes when the ground is very wet. Luckily he stopped after impact and he was not hurt and no other vehicles involved.

Car needs a new windscreen but also a new radiator and some repairs to the engine and minor bodywork - cost probably £1,500 plus hire car.... Read more

As someone with an interest in the application of the law, but not knowing much about it, it occurs to me that it may be relevant whether the tree was unhealthy or damaged and broke, which the owner might or should have been aware of or whether it was blown over in a storm complete with its roots which is unforseeable and falls into the "Act of God" category

MK 1 T reg.
I'm getting a crunching or clicking with knocking on I think my right CV joint(s). I assume outer as that's dependent on steering.
I' very surprised this has developed quickly over a few days of careful driving, now trying to coast around all corners!
I'm intending to replace it, and from Heynes it appears straightforward, however can it suddenly fail catastrophically or do further damage? I have had CV joints go in other cars and they usually last for months and only knock on a hard lock.
Does the Galaxy have different bearings in them that Gould be breaking up?
Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance. Read more

Lots of news. No solution. On janking the car higher, I rotated the LEFT wheel, and found it was restricted, and using the left road wheel to force the steering to turn there was also restriction and noise... So I dropped the wishbone and pulled the CV joint from the hub... And very obviously this CV joint is in a terrible state. Something is broken and catching frequently.

So I should have done a more thorough check first.. I was convinced the noise was from the driver's side!!!

Also the LEFT inner but is torn which I hadn't seen (noor had the MOT a couple no 4 months ago). So it looks as if I'll be replacing either all or part of that.

Back to the right. I got the whole driveshaft out, but it has 26 splines that go into the gearbox... Which none of the ones ont the web do - at least not on the right. Noor does it look quite like any of the pictures, as the inner part of the driveshat looks much longer.

I will probably finish cleaninng the slightly worn CV joint, and put it back with fresh greese and gaiter, but I'd like to know which part it is so I can get it if/when it deteriorates further! Also is this how its bought, or is it split at the straight joint immediately outboard of the intermediate bearing wheretheres a bit of length play? If it does come apart here the length would be about 550 or maybe 555mm ... a number I have herd quoted!!!

So does anyone know this driveshaft: Gearbox/ final drive splines =26. Splines to outer CV joint = 36 , total compressed length= 885mm , length from inner end to intermediate bearing mounting surface= 290mm , And it needs an ABS ring. (hub splines = 38)

That's enough of this unnecessary thread which is itself leading to insults, and is also a possible attempt at a free advert.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about the Altea- I'll definitely be looking into this.

tbh - I think a 5 seater would suffice as long as there were 3 full size seats in the rear....

Hi

Could someone help out there, i have a 2.0l DTI 52 plate and has started giving me a problem. A car with a spanner in front warning light has started showing and everytime it comes on the car loses power and that is worrying me cause this car has been a faithful servant to me and i know there is still a lot of mileage in that engine. Pliz pliz help and let me know what the problem could be!!!!!!! Read more

You need to get us some diagnostic codes. You should be able to find a small friendly garage that'll diagnose it for a tenner, or do it yourself with an op-com.

The diagnostic port is somewhere under the dash or near the handbrake, under the trim, and you just plug it into a laptop, or any pc with a long cable....

After a brief hiatus, Peter Rodgers is back again. This time the sage is concerned about cyclists. As with most IAM advice much that is trite and much that it true, but what is true is trite, and what was is not trite is not true.

There's the usual stuff about not cutting-up cyclists while turning left etc, but the point I take exception to is the advice to overtake gently because it makes the cyclist feel safer.... Read more
