I recently bought an o8 Saab 9-3 1.9 TDI 150 Linear with 40K on the clock.Very occasionally when driving and usually changing down to go round a corner I can take my foot off the accelerator and the car keeps going and seems to pick up speed as if the cruise control has been switched on.I have to brake to slow the car down.I have been back to the garage where the mechanic is Saab trained and he has not found any fault including plugging into the computer.Other than this the car is fine. The car drives fine and as stated this is an intermittent problem.Any ideas ? Hello

Have a problem with very poor performance at speed and especially going up hills. Engine emissions light came on a few weeks ago. Local garage suggested a new exhaust and reset the ECU. Light came back on after a few days. Also got air flow filter changed.... Read more

Temperature guages are notoriously inacurate, but if the guage is reading higher than normal I would investigate the cooling system before anything else.

Thermostats are generally cheap to change. Make sure that the cooling fan is kicking in when the radiator gets hot....

I have an R32 Golf that has done less than 6,000 miles from when I had it, brand new from a VW dealer, and a friend of mine, who happens to be a mechanic, noticed something today while I was chatting to him, when my car was idling. It's a 'ticking' sort of noise that seems to come from the engine area and as soon as I depress the clutch, the noise disappears -- unless the engine noise hides it when I'm driving!

I had heard a 'ticking' sound for a couple of weeks, but didn't think anything about it until he mentioned it today after he heard it! I wonder if anyone on this forum has experienced anything like it! My friend told me to contact the VW dealer as it could be the 'dual mass flywheel' (which being a blonde female, I have never heard of) and he said it should be covered under the warranty.

Thanks if anyone can help in any way and does it sound like a warranty job? Read more

I'm after a practical estate car, I dont do more than 5-8K a year and only want an estate for its practicallity and ability to occasionally do dump runs and pick stuff up from wickes.

I ride a motorcycle for fun and to get somewhere fast, so I'm more focused on economy with the car, that said I dont want to torture myself with it.... Read more

I have just read the HJ article about the most 'manly' cars. I suspect, since the poll was conducted by a shaving foam company, that mostly men answered it. The Ford Mustang was voted most manly. The list of least manly cars had the lovely MX-5 on it, and it would seem that men find the VW Beetle to be rather feminine.

I have to say, aside from the MX-5, I greatly prefer the 'manly' cars list. If I ever go crackers and buy a new style Beetle or a Micra, you may shoot me.... Read more

The breather pipe from the rocker cover goes down around the back of the engine and into the chassis. This has recently started to smoke and seems like white/grey smoke is being forced along the box-framed chassis. When I take the oil filler cap off the same colour smoke is swirling around inside the rocker. Read more

What does it smell of? If its a burnt oily smell it could be combustion gasses due to engine wear, if its a sweet oily smell could be due to fuel somehow getting into the sump.

What are DTCs?

When the vehicle on-board computer recognizes and identifies a problem, a DTC or Diagnostic Trouble Code for that fault is stored in its memory. These codes are intended to help you determine the root cause of a problem. OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes consist of a five-digit alphanumeric code. The DTC format and general code types are shown here. (i.e. P0138)... Read more

I understand the 1st break fluid change is due after 3 years and every 2 after that.

I used to do a higher than usual milage, but am now back to 1 service / year. However the car will be 3 years old in march 2012, where as the service is due in July. So I was wondering if I should have just a break fluid change in March (and an MOT in the mix maybe)? Or do I need to do a service too? Or could it even wait till the service? Bit confused! Many cars, I suspect, never have their brake fluid changed during their whole lives. They're probably the ones in the scrap yard with the front end damage.
