Smallish estate for under £4K? - duncmac

I'm after a practical estate car, I dont do more than 5-8K a year and only want an estate for its practicallity and ability to occasionally do dump runs and pick stuff up from wickes.

I ride a motorcycle for fun and to get somewhere fast, so I'm more focused on economy with the car, that said I dont want to torture myself with it.

I'm stuck on diesel (like the low road tax) vs petrol and the following makes.

Ford focus zetec 1.6 petrol or 1.8 diesel

Astra estate

golf mk4 130 tdi

I did fancy the toyota avensis tourer 1.8 petrol but was scared off by the talk of its oil consumption.

Any other make to consider?

Are diesels no more reliable than petrol engines, do they have higher servicing costs or is it just that you pay a premium for them?

Thanks in advance!

You can pick up a nice 1.6 petrol Focus estate for a lot less than £4k. The engine is very good for cruising but acceleration is a bit lethargic, especially at lower revs.

Forget older ford diesels-they are awful.

The Astra estate is pretty good. GM petrols and diesels are very good.

mk4 Golf with a 130TDI is a fantastic combination-but you'll pay dearly for a good one.

With a 5-8K annual mileage, a 1600-1800 petrol really is the way forward. The VED issue is an example of the worst tax ever designed, but even then it doesn't change the equation significantly.

I would give a simple naturally aspirated petrol the edge in terms of reliability, but they are much less capable than turbo engines of either fuel.

Not many of those about these days or do you just mean without turbos.

By definition 'naturally aspirated' means without turbo...
