What are DTCs?

When the vehicle on-board computer recognizes and identifies a problem, a DTC or Diagnostic Trouble Code for that fault is stored in its memory. These codes are intended to help you determine the root cause of a problem. OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes consist of a five-digit alphanumeric code. The DTC format and general code types are shown here. (i.e. P0138)

What are Freeze Frames?

When an emission-related fault occurs, the on-board computer records certain vehicle conditions. This information is referred to as Freeze Frame data. The information is a "snapshot" of the operating conditions at the time of the fault. This data can be overwritten by faults with a higher priority.

What are Enhanced OBD2 codes?

Enhanced OBD2 Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are those codes unique to a vehicle of a specific year, make, model (and possibly engine size). Enhanced DTCs are assigned by the vehicle manufacturers to cover situations not already covered by a Generic DTC. Enhanced DTCs typically begin with "P1", followed by a 3-digit number (i.e. P1302).

Many of the larger public library systems keep a fairly complete inventory of factory service manuals in their reference sections. These manuals will contain code definitions and other troubleshooting information that can be very helpful.

What are PIDs?

Parameter Identification Data is the real time data information from your vehicle. A list of generic PIDs is available.

What is the View and Display Live Data function?

The View Data function allows you to view the vehicle's Parameter Identification (PID) data in real time. As the computer monitors the vehicle, the information is simultaneously transmitted to the Scan Tool. Apart from Read Codes, View Data is the most useful diagnostic function for isolating the cause of a vehicle operation problem. Viewing data is also used for observing sensor data and the status of switches, solenoids and relays.
