My elderly uncle (87) had a car insurance policy with ELEPHANT which he decided not to renew, he insured his car with another company. He has have now found out that this is an automatic renewal policy which he wasn't aware of when the policy was taken out. He have now recieved a letter claiming that he owe's them a substantial amount of money for the cancellation of the said policy.

I cannot find any reference in their procedures on their website that states that if a poilcy isn't automatically renewed a charge would be incurred.... Read more

I found your guide to car insurance very useful. However there were two recommended providers, Co-operative Insurance and Green Insurance Company.

Chips with everything

A number of roundabouts now seem to advocate turning "right" in the "left" lane.

This now means that on a typical two lane entry roundabout, the car in the left lane has the option of a) turning left, b) continuing straight on or c) turning right, often without any indication as to what is their intention.... Read more

My understanding is that all general & specific rules are subject to "unless otherwise indicated to do so".

So yes, you would generally be in the wrong to attempt a right turn when in the left hand lane unless "directed to do so"; in this case by way of the road markings.

I have a 57 plate Zafira B 1.6 life with 35000 on the clock.

For the last month or so i've noticed that it has been pulling to the left slightly. I've also noticed a high pitched whistling noise coming from what i believe is the front of the car. It is not there all the time and comes and goes during the duration of a journey and sometimes i don't hear it for several days. Some other things i have noticed about the noise:... Read more

When braking in my mk2 mondeo I can feel a knocking through the brake pedal. I am reasonably mechanically minded and have checked this on the net including this site and basically I have eliminated most common causes..

1) Both drive shafts have been replaced with new ones (the n/s driveshaft had a knackered cv joint)... Read more

Hi, I have just purchased a new roof box complete with rails and all fixings to fit this specific vehicle. On removing the 4 thin plastic strips covering the fixing points on the car it appears there are no tapped holes (as should be the case according to the roof rail manufacturer?) I have just asked a friend who has the same car in case Ford had missed drilling mine but he says his is the same? Surely you don't have to drill these yourself? If so will the car then leak water in? Any help would be greatly appreciated as going on hol in a few days! Read more

Agree with you TeeCee - in my opinion it's a cheap nasty way of holding roof bars on. The best system I had was that on the Vectra B - over centre catches that located in holes behind the door rubbers. No locks required either as the doors had to be open to operate the catches. Simple, but effective.

Original fit Toyo A20 Open Country M/S215/55 R18 95H are due for imminent replacement. The only available option seems to be a Continental summer tyre. Nissan Customer Service seemingly unable to help. How can a mainstream manufacturer leave customers stuffed like this? Nice car but off-road capability about to be lost. Thanks Nissan. Read more

I think 55 is about average for a medium car, as in 205/16/55. Why the tyre industry mixes up the measurements between Imperial and metric defies logic.

It doesn't defy logic - although you may not agree with the logic....

Had a 1.6TDCi manual for 5 years before selling it a while ago, one of the best cars we have ever had. In the 5 years other than fuel, tyres and servicing we only had an alternator belt replaced, it had started to crack. The bodywork was still A1 and the interior had held up brilliantly.

runboy is correct, the rubiish auto box was the CVT fitted to 1.6 diesels, 2.0's had a propper auto box....

Having just given my car a full service on saturday, I had the MAF off just to check if it was grubby inside as the filter looked slightly dirtier than usual, I noticed that one of the three wires inside was actually missing. Ordered a new one on saturday night. Between saturday and wednesday, I'd driven about 300 miles, and it was fine.

Put the new MAF in last night and took it out for a spin - I was shocked at actually how much power I'd lost without noticing. It ran fine, even though only a small journey.... Read more
