Hello all

I have a 2006 ford focus 1.8 tdci, just recently the air con has stopped working.
i took it to a garage to have it re gassed and was told gas levels were ok.
Since then i have checked fuses all ok, Relay is energising, high and low pressure switchs are ok but the compressor isnt kicking in.

Yesterday disconnenected the Compressor plug and accross the 2 Pins i have 14v.
What are the two pins i tested is one a earth for the compressor? is there a separate earth that could be bad, im lost, would like it to be something else other then the compressor

many thanks

Smads. Just to advise you that a voltmeter measures potential difference and not presence of current. Checking voltage at the plug with it disconnected merely proves that as in this case there is a difference of 14 volts between the two points. It does NOT prove that current can flow, and so this is not a reliable test. A voltmeter is an excellent diagnostic tool for finding circuit faults, but checks must be done under load. Re-connect the plug and check again, especially if the coil resistance is good as you say it is. You may find that you may not have 14 volts at all with the plug connected, and so you may have a poor connection in the supply cable or a poor earth connection. Use your voltmeter to check each in turn.....

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a golf tdi but am looking for real world feedback on engine performance and reliability. The 1.9tdi 105bhp on paper looks pretty basic but how good is this cars acceleration for general overtaking and hill climbing etc. I do a mixture of urban and hilly rural driving so need something with a bit of poke. The 2.0 tdi looks far better on paper but seems to have a sportier setup and am looking for comfort rather than harsh suspension. Also, after looking at Audi 2.0 tdi's track record, there seems to be complaints about oil pump failures with this VAG engine, whereas the 1.9 105bhp seems pretty good.... Read more

Yes, I'm probably conflating the 2 different 2L diesel engines - I believe though, neither were/are highly regarded & the 'marketing' bit was the need to produce a (or appear to) 'new' engine & not necessarily linked to power output. The size increase is also linked with the balancer shafts, start of the DPF era & oil pump drive failure as I understand it.

Hello all - I've been reading these very helpful forums for ages but this is my first post so a) hello, and b) please be gentle :?

A bit of background: I'm not a mechanic, but I know which end of a spanner is which and I'm not afraid to take cars to bits to fix them. Having said that, I have taken a back seat with my current car and haven't done any major work on it (because I've never needed to). I've owned Rover 200s and a citroen zx in the past (for my sins) so I've spent a fair bit of time tinkering under the bonnets of those, but as far as the guts of a Focus goes I've got very little experience.... Changed the fuel filter (old one was black as the night sky) and going to run through a load of miller's diesel additive, see if it cleans the injectors at all. After that I guess it's decat and then inlet manifold...

At 40,000 miles (hot or cold) waiting for the coil light to go out and turning the key has lost its reliability. The starter motor works fine and using a slight touch on the throttle gets it going. Something has clearly changed and for 35000 miles it wasn't even necessary to wait for the light to go out or to touch the throttle. Is this a known feature and what can I check with amateur equipment? My thanks in advance for any tips. Read more

Thanks. I'll check the fuel filter; where is it? Not immediately following a service, say two months. I am wondering about glow plugs but don't know their projected life. If your problem is mainly cold starts then glow plugs fits but I am told that some valve in the system could be faulty.

Hi to all on the forum. I have joined so i can post a topic and maybe get some sound advice as i have encountered a small problem from my abs warning light on my dashboard, the light sometimes comes on when i start the engine, it wont go out when all other warning lights go out after a few seconds, the abs light will stay on as long as the engine runs. I have tried this little trick and it seems to work, well at least until i start the motor again after not driving the car.

If i get the light come on from a start , i turn off the engine and then re start it, the light then goes out?????... Read more

Hi folks.

The car is a 1997 2.0 manual diesel , i always wait for the tests to finish before starting the motor. I set off to work this morning at about 05.10 and after the initial start up the light stayed on again, i turned off the motor and then re started it and the light then went out and stayed out for the hour and a half journey into work., this is typical of what is going wrong....

hi i have a Y reg Ford KA Collection. recently it has started misfiring and juddering, especially when setting off in lower gears, the engine is also really noisy and loud. it seems to struggle to get going and then all of a sudden, it kicks in and moves off fine. it wasnt too bad to begin with but the juddering and spluttering is getting worse the more i drive it. when i first get in it, in the morning it isnt too bad but the longer the journey, the worse it gets. i dont know if its an engine or exhaust problem. or if its struggling to get petrol through to the engine. as sometimes when i get out theres a strong smell of petrol. its really bad at juddering when going up hills and when putting more foot pressure on the accelerator. ive tried looking under the bonnet but im no mechanic being a girl! there seems to be some bubbling around the engine which looks like leaking oil but i cant be sure. im going to take it to a garage after the bank holiday but in the meantime I just wondered if anyone had an idea of whats wrong with it? is it worth repairing or is it likely to be expensive? as car only cost me £850. thanks Read more

It has been brought to my notice that a distant member of the family, living in one of the poorest counties of England, is contemplating co-purchasing a car with a friend. I am not sure is this is an informal arrangement or not. Apparently this arrangement is common in the county.

One of the features of my Peugeot 307 is folding mirrors. More of a gimmick but can be useful. However the drivers side mirror doesn't always like to play ball. It first happened about 3 months ago. The drivers side mirror would either not fold at all or if I folded it manually then tried to open it electronically it would move fine but it wouldn't stop until the mirror had moved back so far it couldn't go any further, then click and clunk as the motor tried to push the mirror further. From this I concluded that it was a fault with the system that determines the current position of the mirror.

I took the mirror apart but couldn't find anything wrong so I just gave everything a good clean and a touch of oil. That fixed things beautifully until about a week ago when it started playing the same game again.... Read more
