Volkswagen VW Golf TDI - VW Golf TDI 1.9 Vs 2.0 - any real difference? - subfrequenz

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a golf tdi but am looking for real world feedback on engine performance and reliability. The 1.9tdi 105bhp on paper looks pretty basic but how good is this cars acceleration for general overtaking and hill climbing etc. I do a mixture of urban and hilly rural driving so need something with a bit of poke. The 2.0 tdi looks far better on paper but seems to have a sportier setup and am looking for comfort rather than harsh suspension. Also, after looking at Audi 2.0 tdi's track record, there seems to be complaints about oil pump failures with this VAG engine, whereas the 1.9 105bhp seems pretty good.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

PS sorry if this questions has been asked before, I did a search but could not find a thread!

I've not driven a 1.9 105 though until about 6 months ago I owned from new an Audi A4 1.9 115 which had a great engine. Very free-revving, loads of torque and economical.

I also currently own a Passat 2.0 140 which I had remapped to approx 170. Masses of torque, great motorway car, takes all inclines in its stride. We recently went up Telegraph Hill in Devon in 6th gear, 4 adults plus luggage, simply romped up. But, it's had 2 engines replaced uner warranty! Current engine is now 3 years old and has covered about 36k miles and seems fine (hopefully, as it's out of warranty).

My advice would be go for the 2.0 if want a bit of power, if not I'm sure the 1.9 will be fine and possibly more relaible.

Any Connection?

My money's on the usual oil pump drive failure.

To the OP, buy the 1.9. I wouldn't touch a 2.0 with a bargepole.

This is only true of the early type 2.0 TDI engines I think of BLB code type. I had an A4 with the BRE engine and it was perfecty for 60K miles when I sold it, and I understand this is the norm for the 2.0 engines after 2006/2007 or so.

No, no connection, the first two engines were unadulterated. The first engine failed at 9k due to the oil pump, the second at 14k (i.e. 23k in total) due to failure of a cambelt tensioner bolt.

This is what gets me about buying second hand cars... ok so it costs a hell of a lot more to buy new but I can't take the risk of having to replace one, let alone two engines if they blow up.

Ok if you are mechanically minded I suppose but if I pay £10k on a second hand golf (guestimate so don't shoot me) and the engine blows up after a year how much is that going to cost me?

All the informed comment I've read, and in accord with several posters' comments here, slates the 2L version of the original 1.9L for its rather compromised engineering design & long term reliability.

I've had 3 1.9L 130PS VAG engined cars (an A4, A6 & a Skoda Superb) and liked the engine's 'driveability' (a vague term really, each to his own) excellent mid-range power & economy. I also had a good test drive in a 105PS 1.9L VAG in an Octavia & was most impressed (after the initial 'oh it's only 105PS, can't be much cop..' reaction prior to drive) as well. I really didn't notice the lesser bhp/torque output (even though I wasn't exactly caning it on the test drive).

Reliability wise - I can't personally say, I had no problems (bar a leaky fuel pump in warranty on the A4) with any of them ,but I bought from new & didn't exceed 25-30K. However, the prevailing wisdom seems to be that the 2L versions have been mechanically compromised by increasing from their original 1.9L size. In a nutshell, the 105PS seems to be regarded as a nice, relatively understressed version, while the 130PS is the relaible limit for output & the 2L a hideous marketing man's desire for a nice round figure riding roughshod over best engineering principles.

They took the 1.9 to 150-and 170hp so the trivial increase in displacement has nothing to do with the output. There was a 2.0 with a 8V PD head, but when people talk about the 2.0, they usually mean the 16V head. This was a revised engine with twin cam, swirl flaps, balance shafts, the lamented oil pump drive-totally different beast. The recent 2.0 also departed from unit injectors and switched to CR in line with other manufacturers.

Yes, I'm probably conflating the 2 different 2L diesel engines - I believe though, neither were/are highly regarded & the 'marketing' bit was the need to produce a (or appear to) 'new' engine & not necessarily linked to power output. The size increase is also linked with the balancer shafts, start of the DPF era & oil pump drive failure as I understand it.
