When I was in my 20s the cars to have were amongst others the 205GTi, Golf GTi Mk2, MR-2 Mk1, E30 BMW 3 series plus some more I can't just now remember.
I'm wondering which cars people think are the cult cars of today? Read more
Hi, Im new to honest John so please forgive me if i sound a bit dizzy!!. I brought a 2004 Vectra 2.0 dti that was in 'limp mode', being told by the seller it was in need of a new Mass Air Flow Meter (MAF), after purchasing one the car was still in 'limp mode'. My local diagnostic center traced the fault back to the fuel pump ECU, but they cannot be 100% sure, the car has had £940 spent on it in the last 28 days by the previous owner, including a new EGR valve and numerouse diagnostic checks, which was throwing out MAF faults, iv been quoted £1200 for a new ECU fitted which is more than i paid for the car!!
Do these ECU repair places guarentee to fix the fault or would it just be a case of "oh well it wasnt the ECU"? and to remove the ECU do i have to remove the pump and if so is it and easy job,(bearing in mind i brought the car for my wife who is due to give birth in 28 days!!) any help would be most appreciated, thanks, Mark. I had heard that, on Vauxhalls, the ECU is too close to the engine block, which shakes it and heats it up so it ends up knackered; this is manifest as a dodgy MAF. Anyone back me up?
My brother in law just had to have the ECU on his Clio replaced - an independent garage said £850 ish for a speedy job (i.e. get the part from Renault and have it back to him in a few days) or £350 if he was prepared to let them send the car away and wait 2 weeks for it. He decided to wait the 2 weeks! The ECU itself is a few hundred quid, but they have to program it to match your car....
I've hardly see a Laguna coupe or Citroen C6. Subarus also spring to mind. The last Legacy was a handsome car but latest isn't going to win any design awards. Ditto the Impressher, well that doesn't impress me. II've only seen 3 new Saab 9-5s. So have wondered if the one I spot is the same one, but just in a different location. Read more
Just remember it's a recently developed CVT - not the bullet-proof autobox of previous Subaru's.
When driving to work this week ive had the heater just on warm to take the chill off.
But the heater just gets hotter, even if i turn it right down to cold,... Read more
One of the features of my Peugeot 307 is folding mirrors. More of a gimmick but can be useful. However the drivers side mirror doesn't always like to play ball. It first happened about 3 months ago. The drivers side mirror would either not fold at all or if I folded it manually then tried to open it electronically it would move fine but it wouldn't stop until the mirror had moved back so far it couldn't go any further, then click and clunk as the motor tried to push the mirror further. From this I concluded that it was a fault with the system that determines the current position of the mirror.
I took the mirror apart but couldn't find anything wrong so I just gave everything a good clean and a touch of oil. That fixed things beautifully until about a week ago when it started playing the same game again.... Read more
Hello everyone just thought I would pop along here and ask for the advice of the forum seeing as I’ve read the reviews and watched the videos on various cars.

Nah. The window opens when you become confident!
I really can't think of any helpful contributions to the OP. With £8K capital, I would much rather have a £2K car and £6K of cash backing it up, than an £8K car and no capital....
Anyone seen one yet? Good to see Lancia back. I expect alot of these will lose their incorrect badges. The boss of Fiat hasn't a clue......... Read more
The biggest shock is the price! Holy Mackerel!

I saw the Lexus one before from a mobile phone picture but that is funny! The blonde bimbo who crashed into four cars in the same accident makes you question your faith in humanity. Read more
Thanks for that, HJ. I suppose one shouldn't laugh at the misfortunes of others, but - hey, most comedy is about just that.
Reminiscent of the World of Fail - worth Googling if you haven't seen it. The one with George W. Bush is priceless.
We have a 1.9 diesel Citroen Berlingo Multispace, en excellent vehicle that does all that it is supposed to do (carries five people and their luggage or goods when required). We have one problem that we can't get to the bottom of and neither can the local garages.
When the weather gets hot (35°C) and the car has been standing over a hot road/in an open air carpark, the PAS goes very stiff and while it will ease off a bit after driving at 70kph+, as soon as one comes into a village or town and needs to slow down/park or otherwise manoeuvre at low speed, the steering goes stiff again. The steering pump was replaced about 18 months ago. ... Read more
I was about to say check the belt tension before I read the last part of your post. Did they fit a new belt when they changed the pump? I have had this problem several times in the past with my Citroens due to a slipping belt.
The immobilizer on a Rover 418 has been triggered. I have the keycode but I cannot find a key pad on which to enter it. The driver thinks he used the radio key pad but it only has the numbers 1-4. HELP, please. I cannot find any mention of an immobilizer/alarm in the handbook. Read more
I ran into this problem with my 420 ended up far more complex than I imagined.
If all is well and good, the following will work. When you turn the key turn it fully to the locked or unlock position then back to it's central position for each digit (I.e do it four times for '4')....

And MG ZR and ZS. The ZS V6 was supposed to be the pick of the bunch.
