Yesterday I experienced something pretty scary. On my 52 plate Xsara Picasso I slowed down to a roundabout, changed down from 5th to 4th and my Gear selector had popped out of the ball joint! Thus making the car immediately undriveable.

This was the first time Id ever come across this type of issue and didnt know it existed until after the recovery man came out to fix it.... Read more

Do you know how easy it is for the components to be checked over? Ive noticed on my Picasso that the offending piece is quite a far stretch towards the bottom of the engine bay, below the air filter. Would a visible check be easy enough if the car was up on the ramps?

Does anyone know if this particular model has a DMF fitted?

i've found a mystery disconnected cable while fixing a leaking wind screen wash bottle its about 18 inches long and branches from the cable that connects to the bottom of the bottle and has a yellow plug , ive looked everywhere but can't see a connection point and as the car has never been worked on in this arrear im wondering if its a sparefor retro fitting fog lights in the bumper as this model doesn't have them, there are even grovesin the bottle to accept it Read more

Most cars are fitted with a standard wiring loom where there are extra connecters and depending on the model have them connected.

is this what you mean as if all is working ok then there is not anything to worry about....

The above car developed this fault ive tried a few things like testing the reciever ring on another clio and it worked ive tried all the usual things with the key like re-setting it or holding the lock button down when trying to start but no good.
So got a locksmith to make a new key and chip (£90) but still having the same fault although they say that there is a signal from the key.
Just wondering if any one can help if its not the key or the reciever what would be the next best step.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

Due to some rather careless parking at the side of my garage I've managed to scuff the paintwork on my Focus in a quite depressing manner (I only noticed it today too - after having all week to fix it...) basically against an over-grown bush.... Read more

ditto the advice from Victorbox. Autoglym. If thats not abrasive enough then G3. I have used both for over twenty years without any problems. Both worked on my fathers silver Vectra and my my sisters silver CRV. Driving on narrow hedge lined roads on Exmoor, they regularly pick up multiple scrathes and "stripes" from hedges and tree branches. I have always been able to remove them with the above products. good luck and happy polishing.

A friend phoned last night to say he had received a letter from the local council. Like myself he has rented a lockup from them for many years. They say they are auditing and need details of the vehicle kept therein and a copy of the V5. He, in fact, keeps a semi-dismantled BSA 650 in it, plus numerous parts for a classic Humber Hawk and a colection of old mowers. The BSA doesn't even have a V5. This seems like another example of council snooping or a job creation scheme... Read more

I'd just tell them it my daily runner whatever that happens to be and as for the V5 - tell 'em to mind their own business.

I remember receiving a fine from the DVLA for not SORNing a motorbike (why should I?) they sent a form along with the fine 7 pages thick with info I "had to" supply, marital status, house ownership details, salary etc. In thick marker I wrote "none of your f***ing business" across the front of it and returned it with a cheque for the fine - I heard nothing about it - they cashed the cheque....

I am a uk resident working in norway.
i recently bought a second hand van to drive home to the uk.
I will be returning home for good.
Is there a uk based insurance company that will give me cover that i need to get the vehicle back.
Once in the uk i will register the van for use in the uk Read more

Aviva do still offer cover for oversears vehicles being brought back to the UK being insured on a chasis number if it's through a broker.

The easy way to find companies that offer this type of cover is to contact brokers who are based near UK military bases as they handle theses situations day in day out...

We have a Ford Escort Van 55 (2000, W Reg) and the Diesel pump has broke. We have been told to get another Diesel pump from a car breakers yard & have been advised that the Diesel pumps off the older Escort Vans are better as they don't have an immobiliser on them. Will an older Diesel pump be compatable with our van? We wasnt thinking of getting a Diesel pump off anything older than 1990. Read more

I think the immobilisers came in about 1995/6 so anything before then should be OK.
