I used to have a mpv Mazda 5. When involved in an accident i was given a Seat Ibiza. I was told the repair would be done in a week so thought i can bear with it. When i was told later it would take 5 weeks i rang the insurers and was given a Zafira.

From my knowledge on reading posts here and from highway code etc....

We all should know that under no circumstances should we go through a red traffic light. Even if we have the fire brigade or ambulance behind us. They should wait patiently till the lights change and we can move out of the way safely. They should not force us to go through the red lights.

If you do go through a red light and is caught by the red light traffic camera you will be prosecuted. It has happened regardless of the picture showing an emergency vehicle behind you.

However only the police can instruct you to go through red traffic lights. This is allowed according to the highway code.

My question is that for the police to instruct you to go through a red traffic lights can they do it from inside their car or do they have to come to you and instruct you to move? Do you have to take their badge number or car reg number in case you are caught on the camera and have to attend court?

Personally i will move to let them pass when i know if there is no red light camera.

If you suspect that a traffic light has failed on red, there's that period of time when you're weighing up whether or not the light has really failed and how long to wait before cautiously edging forward.

As an aside on failed lights, we had some roadworks near us where they installed temporary lights controlling a stretch of road that went round a bend. I drove through and it was apparent that cars coming the other way were ignoring the red light. But after getting home I walked back to the lights and I established that the lights were showing green simultaneously at both ends!

I know that when an emergency vehicle is answering a call they can disobey traffic laws/signs. They can go up the one-way street in the opposite direction, do U-turns when not allowed or ignore no-entry signs etc.

Can the police, if not answering an emergency call, disobey traffic laws?

There is a local magistrate court located on the main road. There is a one-way side street next to it. Just as you enter the side street there is a car park on the right for the court. Numerous times i have seen police cars emerge from the car park, go along the one-way street the wrong way to join the main road. There are not on call, no lights flashing etc etc, no passengers. Are they allowed to do this? Read more

Twill depend what is written in the statute making the law. Many do in fact contain an exemption for emergency services, for example to shoot a red light. However there is still a sanction as they can still be done for careless driving if something untoward were to happen and they were found negligent.

Such a good idea. I do know that when people try to find things to buy online, the first two sites they go to are ebay and amazon. So having a shop there would greatly improve their sales. Read more

I have no direct knowledge of the company but adding "Trade Cars" to the name used to be a claimed method of avoiding consumer legislation under the Sale of Goods Act which does not afford protection "in the trade".

As long as you make it clear from the outset in writing (an email will do nicely) that you are a private buyer and not in the motor trade then whatever the firm is called you will be afforded the very valuable additional protection of the Sale of Goods Act.....

Hello, my Focus just passed its MOT but with a note to the effect that it is rusted on the underside. What would be the best treatment for this as I intend to keep the car for several years. Many thanks. Robert Read more

echo the above but you could paint any rusted metal with POR15 - it's a bit like hammerite but more flexible so doesn't crack when stressed. The put the waxoyl on top of that.

Would disagree with it being the most filthy job you can imagine - it's much worse than that and the only way to get dried POR15 off your skin is just to wait until you shed those particular skin flakes!

Bought an A1 Towing tow bar for my Renault Scenic from a guy that took it off his Mothers car, downloaded the instructions for fitting from their website, and fitted it to my car. The tow bar is for a 1997 to September 2003 and as my car is a 2001 model, it falls within the range.

When it was finished, it looked like it was sitting too low, and leaning back about 2-3 degrees from the vertical position of the rear bumper. I also have to wire it yet, but need to know if there is a pre drilled hole for the wiring, or do I have to do my own.... Read more

Also check all the relays as some may have back EMF arrestor diodes in them so the coil has a polarity. Regards Peter
