Hi

I noticed the other day that i have a silver calcium battery. My questions are:... Read more

If a modern battery needs topping up it usually indicates a fault with the charging system, over-charging it and boiling the fluid off, this then warps the plates and knackers the battery.

I have 2 problems with the 100,000 mile engine in my Mk5 Astra 1.6 8V that may be linked.

Hi,

Just a general question - as an owner of a 406 estate, I'm looking around to replace it and the Kia Ce'ed is on the list along with a Peugeot 307 SW (circa 2007 on-). I'm drawn to the 1.6HDi diesel as, having a Peugeot diesel already, I'm impressed with its economy and reliability. The question is, is the 1.6 HDi a similar engine to the 2.0 HDi? Is it a cam belt or redesigned to chain. It's something I like about the Kia is its camchain. If the Peugeot has one then its a definite contender.... Read more

The 1.6hdi,is a completely different engine to the 2.0hdi I have this in a 407sw I am running at the moment in Germany over 100k kilometers it has returned 5.4litres per 100km the engine so far has been without problems, cam belt changes at 150k miles I believe the engine is used by a number of car manufacturers including Ford far better than anything that Kia/Hyundai produce.

There is a small leak in the power steering rack of my 53 plate Picasso. I'm being quoted £350 for a new one, inc. of labour and VAT.

It's a cost I could well do without! Are there any alternatives to do it more cheaply? In particular I was wondering about:... Read more

Has it failed the MOT? if not and its only a small leak it will be much cheaper to keep topping the fluid up.

My son has a 2002 Berlingo van which runs on either petrol or gas. Last week, when trying to start first thing, the engine turned over readily enough but it wouldn't fire. An independent garage in London diagnosed fuel pump failure - this was replaced but it still didn't start. After more analysis and a lot more cash an 'electonic fault' was diagnosed and supposedly corrected and all was well for a week.

It has now failed to start again - showing the same symptoms. I don't believe two fuel pumps can have failed and I'm not sure about the electronics bit.... Read more

Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody had any thoughts on the current trend of buying a pricey motor and then ruining it with a nasty matt/gloss black paintjob, which looks awful! Is this a classy 'improvement', or just an expensive-to-undo craze? Not a fan myself! :-/ Read more

Ha yeh Vauxhall were as ever ahead of the field, with their development in the 90s of a classic red that transformed before your very eyes into a matt pink.

Still popular as ever as there as so many kept lovingly that way.

Vehicle has only done 45,000 miles and is justover 4 years old. About a year ago, it started playing up; the warning light (the one looking like a coil) would flash, the warning chime sounded and the car went into (I suppose) limp home mode. This happened from time to time and was temporarily solved by pulling over, turning the engine off and restatrting which seemed to reset whatever was wrong. It got worse (more frequent) a month or so ago, and my local engineer fitted a new turbo. All seemed OK until it happened again three time last Saturday morning. The fault says something like "boost pressure outside range" I guess that the turbo being brand new, the problem must lie somewhere else. Does anybody have an bright ideas or good advice? Read more

Sounds like your mechanic hasn't got a good enough code reader for VW. You need either Vagcom or VCDS or of course the one VW dealers use.

That will tell if the ' out of range' turbo pressure is either over or under pressure & that is important in deciding where to look next....

I've no idea what a 'kilogramme' is. ;)

My wife has recently been convicted a second time (SP30) for speeding. the latest offence was in November 2010. This has considerably increased her insurance premium. I have heard from friends that by completing a speed awareness course it can prevent the 3 penalty points. At the time of the latest conviction she was not offered the course but can she apply to take one now to reduce the points on her licence or does it have to be completed at the time of the offence? and is it by invite only?
