Thinking on buying a used 3.0tdi or 4.0tdi A8, anyone any info? Read more
Took the car for its service, M.O.T and new exhaust today at Kwik-Fit and it has failed the M.O.T due to what they think is the handbrake cable, they told me that they did the M.O.T before the service which i thought was strange to start with but anyway being Kwik-Fit they cannot replace or repair this part, they just said that they think this is whats wrong, i was just wondering if anyone had any idea how much a new one would be? any help or info would be much appreciated..
Thanks

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that things don't sound very professional here at all. For a start I thought Kwik-Fit advertised themselves as being brake specialists (amongst other things) but now these particular lot are saying that they can't do this repair.
Also if the car had new brakes all round in August at this same Kwik-Fit, now they have serviced the car too as well as failing it on the MOT for this brake problem, then surely they should be refunding some of the money paid out for both the brake work done in the summer and the obviously poor service that they have also just completed.
In my opinion if the car has had a proper service then it should fly through an MOT and at least be roadworthy but this has done neither. Very bad service from Kwik-Fit I reckon.
Autocar and many others (save Danny Cobbs on this site) have said this is possibly the best of the 4 pot Diesels and is smooth and willing.
Clarkson last Sunday( amid muc sniggering at a sheepish May)
"It's a boxer isn't it (giggle)? It's the worst Diesel I have ever driven, it has no torque! Yer have to rev the nuts of it in first, get it into second and then jergergeregerger" (shakes with laughter)
So who is right people?

Indeed I meant July just gone.
I agree that it really is only a matter of a few extra revs - I don't notice myself doing it now and I don't overrev when driving other diesels. Many cars need a slight adjustment in driving style to adjust to different biting points on the clutch or different levels of assistance to the steering or brakes so its not a unique car in that regard.
been told I need new droplink (price quoted £45.00)
what is it
what does it do
is it necessary

Done a few of these myself (Vectra and Omega) and they're not too bad for DIY. Parts are around £9-£15 for each link so £30 isn't a bad price for labour. The last time I did one it took me an hour and 20 minutes of that was getting the car in the right position to be jacked up!
Yesterday my Legacy went in for its 12,000 mile "service" - oil and filter change and inspection at a main dealer. They rang saying they'd drained the oil and didn't realise that the diesel used a different oil filter and they didn't have one in stock. A double whammy! I couldn't leave the car with them for another day so they refitted the old filter. They've offered to have the car back and fit a new filter saying that would be ok. I think I'd prefer another fill of new oil as some of the old oil in the old filter will have mixed with the new oil. Is that fair enough or am I being over fussy? Appreciate any views. Thanks. The car is going great and I carried out a little mod myself the other weekend and trimmed the driver side rubber overmat, which provided another 4mm of accelerator pedal travel and unleashed a few more bhp!
You're driving the thing flat-out then?! Surely not the best way to maximise diesel type power characteristics surely!
The buttons on the key on my wifes B Class Mercedes stopped functioning. Popped round to the local Mercedes dealer and was informed that the batteries were £5 for two. I said I was expecting him to give me one not charge me.
I fefused to pay their price, on the internet the most expensive I could see were £1.69 for two including postage.
The same batteries, Panasonic CR2025 as original.
Another of their customers lost at vehicle renewal time. Read more
I agree with whoever implied that this isn't a very big issue. The root cause of the problem, if it is a problem, is the dreaded computer system. Batteries are in stock; stock has to be booked out; you can't do that without generating an invoice.
Even when I buy VW's own-brand screenwash from a VW dealer (it's surprising cheaper and better than most of the stuff you get in the shops), and pay cash, they still have to produce a multi-part invoice.
I bought a new vehicle last year and now it has to go in for re-call work. I have asked the supplying dealer for a courtesy vehicle whilst the work is completed but they are refusing to supply one. I use the vehicle for work and the dealer has said if I wish to apply for compensation then I have to apply directly to the manufacturer. I would have thought "...sales of goods act..." or similar would state a courtesy vehicle should be supplied.
Any ideas ?

Cabbies are a funny breed, bless 'em. There was a programme on the TV the other night about the economic downturn and cabbies were interviewed. Times was terrible, they said, including one bloke who was sure he'd never seen worse in 30 years.
But when there's a chance of losing out, bless you guvnor, I'll need compensation for all the work I'm missing. Or not. Depending on who I'm talking to.
I only take courtesy cars if I really have to. Unless they're covered on your own policy, you're usually on a minimum £500 excess and you're often driving round in a car covered with ads.
Anyway, guv, I've got to go 'cos I've got a fare. Or have I? Or not.
Hi
I have a mondeo 03 plate
Since I have had it the injectors have been cleaned/changed, new glow plugs, new air, fuel and oil filter + new oil of correct consistency. Engine has now done 71000 miles.
Also had air con and radiator fan on continuously. This was a faulty heater control panel. (pre climate control)
I had bad slow running and have cured this by blanking off the EGR valve with a metal sheet.
I now am left with the following:
1) Rev counter shows tickover at about 750rpm I think this should be higher
2) Temp gauge fluctuates between 0 and quarter. Car eventually gets warm
3) Engine cuts out occasionally on approach to roundabouts and road junctions, starts immediately in most cases but have had one instance when I had to wait 2/3 minutes and then it was fine.
Suggestion on the various sites seem to indicate that a software upgrade is needed, but others have said that this makes it worse.
Any ideas where I can start.
Regards
Colin Taylor

Hi
Found the problem. Changed the thermostat for a third party one. Temp guage read quarter and engine ran better. After about three weeks things got worse and temperature guage read minimum, only rising to quarter in heavy traffic then dropping back.
Had a engine code done and everything seemed OK except for the following:
Cylinder Head Temp = 71 degrees
Engine Coolant Temp = 73 degrees
Removed thermostat which said 88 degrees on it
Bit the bullet and bought a Ford Thermostat £45 inc gasket !!!!
Temp guage now reads Half, engine runs better and does not cut out on roundabouts, as yet.
Ford thermostat reads Motorcraft 88 - 102 degrees

The local BIBs appear to have obtained a number mobile enforcement vans (or one they move around a lot). It seems I meet one a couple of times whenever I go out lately.
It got me thinking that I've never seen a 20MPH limit enforced.
Is the equipment used capable of accurate measurement at lower speeds? Perhaps some other method is used or maybe they just don't bother.
Any enlightenment? Read more
That's interesting - there are no repeaters or road markings here, just the round signs at the entrances and exits to the estate including some mention of a "20mph zone". Whether the police were prosecuting or just having a word with drivers though, I don't know.
I've had a service carried out on an 03 new shape Micra by an independent garage. How do I reset the maintenance schedule to get rid of the warning that comes up everytime the car is used? Thank you. Read more
Is this any help? (Found with a quick google)

I Googled it to but found this site! Thanks for that DD; I'll give it a go.
I think the problematic one was the 5HP24. It was only fitted to 4wd A6 and A8 models - it was never fitted to fwd versions. The VAG code for the really bad ones is usually DTD or DTE. They all fail eventually.
Audi dropped the 40k change for regular autos (NOT the Multitronic which is compleltely different) when they went from 4sp to 5sp in the mid-90's.
