SWMBO's astra has developed a ticking noise, plainly audible from inside the car at low speed under load, just audible at motorway speed.
Her tame mechanic says its the tappets and all he'd do would be change the oil and filter, so i've done that anyway and there is no difference.
Any other suggestions as to the cause and solution, or is it time to swap it in ? Read more
Hi there,
I have a problem with my Verso. When I've driven the car for a few minutes a definitive single clunk/knock sound which starts happening intermittently when I apply the brake. It doesn't happen when I first press the brake and the car starts slowing, but only when the car gets to around 15-10mph. You can hear the noise inside the car and feel the clunk through the brake pedal. I bought this car 3 months ago and the fault seemed to be there after a few weeks. I have had it fully serviced about a month ago by a Toyota main dealer and they did a full brake inspection, in which they said they took it apart and put it back together. The noise went away for a month and has started again which is worrying me as my wife and baby use this car and am worried there's a fault with the brakes! Any idea's most welcome
Many thanks in advance for any help

Afaik Mintex was last sold in 2011 (to the same company that also owns e.g. Pagid). However, like most mass market friction manufacturers they produce a no. of different qualities of pads.- I was happy with a set of Mintex pads on my first Avensis that were fitted when I also upgraded the discs but they were one of their better ranges rather than the cheapest.
Afaik Mintex branded products are still made in the UK.
I wanted a new key for my car so I picked up a fob and a key blank off eBay.
I've managed to program the remote fob using the instructions in the handbook, and this works fine. I've had the key cut at a local place and this unlocks the doors fine, but I'm struggling to program the transponder to the car so I can actually start the car!
I have two working keys and have tried the method that used to work with older Ford's, i.e. put key 1 in and turn to position 2, put key 2 in and turn to position 2, then put the new key in and turn to position 2, but this doesn't seem to be working.
Can anyone confirm whether this should work?
Is there another way of programming the transponder?
Or will I need to go to a dealer? Read more
Not sure if the following link covers it or not.

I converted my st to xenon using the proper projector headlight but had problem using the standard ballast so i bought a kit d2s kit off ebay rewired the headlight back to the plug that was on the standard headlight so it would plug into the cars loom - everything works fine but im not happy with the light output and wanted to try and run the bulbs from the ford ballast.
does anyone have any ideas how i can do this Read more
Regardless of the setting on a level surface; there are numerous undulations in the road surface that lift the beams straight into oncoming driver's eyes - dazzling them, particularly spectacle wearers, thus endangering cyclists.
Good self-levelling constantly corrects for this, keeping the beams level - THAT is why your installation is illegal.
The engine is the 1.8 Endura diesel. I'm only getting 44 MPG running around local in a rural area and 47MPG on long journeys doing around 60 - 70 MPH. I have only just bought the car and on the assumption I would get about 50MPG, so I'm a bit disappointed. Is this normal for Fiesta diesels or could any adjustments be made by a garage to make it more fuel efficient. Read more
I just find it difficult to believe that such a small car can give such a poor fuel consumption - I can only conclude that its because of the old engine design although the 12v 2.1 peugeot engine goes back to 1990 and does significantly better in a heavier car.
Is it turboed, if not that would explain a bit, not auto? that would explain a lot.
I have an automatic petrol model which was going beautifully until last week when in drive around 3000 revs gearbox warning light came on and there was a loud clunk sounding as if i had driven over something metal. When the car is turned off and on again the light goes out and it continues to drive ok. has happened every day since when cold especially. It is under warranty and after a second look they are replacing sensors! Can you tell me a bit more about this or if you are familiar with the probelm.
Thanks v much.

Hi,
I know it's been a long time since you posted this, but I have the same car (06, 1.6 Semi-Auto) and am having the exact same problem. Out of the blue, there is a clunk sound, the warning light comes on and says there is a gearbox error. The next time I use the car, it's gone. Did you ever figure out what was wrong and what needs to be done? Many thanks.

My husband's Merc is due a service - 30,000 miles. This apparently is called the 'D' service and he has been told it is the most expensive service - and I think so at a quote of £900 from the local Mercedes dealer!!!
How do I convince him to take it to an independent garage who service Mercedes at probably half this price. Also anyone else out there used such a garage for servicing their Merc and been happy - we live in Kent.
Thanks

While my W210 was in its first flush of youth I took it to MB in Ashford, Half the cost of the MB dealer at Gatwick but 160 mile round trip. Servicing in France sounds interesting. I do the service myself now using MB parts every 6000 miles but I know its going to affect its resale value as it doesnt have MB stamps in the book.( But nobody is going to want it as its been dragging a twin axle caravan all over Europe during its life.....!)

Re-posted to Technical - and merged with the original thread.
hi, i have a 1999 1.2 petrol clio. Appologies for my ignorance regarding cars and engines :) Ever since weve been having colder nights ive been going to start the car in the morning and as the ignition is turned (be it starting the engine or not) both the fuel gage and engine temp gage etc will rise to indicate a level of measurement and then suddenly they will fall to zero and then rise again. As in, the needle on the fuel gage will shoot to the top then the lights will go out on the dasboard, the needle will fall to the bottom, and then come back and rise to full etc seconds later. On top of this the clock will reset and i will lose my trip mileage. This will happen several times, although the engine will start without any problems and the sterio, lights etc all work fine without cutting out. I believe i have linked a cause and effect with this problem to the engine being cold as the dials function normal once the engine gets up to temperature. This is becoming quite a problem as it affects the speed gauge aswel while im driving as it will indicate a speed and then suddenly drop to 0mph, this is quite frightening if im going through a speed camera :) I would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help me with this
thanks
{amendment to subject line. You don't need to put make/model in it as the choice made from the drops down menus does that for you} Read more
indeed, it has never affected the working of the car
but that was the advice i was given that it could be lots of things that are causing the problem
and i dont think id have the time or money in that case to check/change everythin
just hope the problem is fixed as it does seem to be now :)

>>in this weather these cars run cooler (because of the over sized radiator)
Should make little or no difference if the thermostat is working correctly!
