Customer decided not to have the timing belt replaced and carry on with the old one.

I was in the Audi dealership a couple of weeks ago and noticed a leaflet on belt changes. I can't remember the mileage (it was more than 40K), but it did say a max of 5 years between changes!

Ive had this car from new1.4 206 LX peugeot and just recently an intermitant fault has developed. When stopping at lights or junctions the engine just cuts out .It may do it a few times on a 10 mile journey or not at all.It dos'nt matter if the engines hot or cold. When it happens it starts straight away after, whether bump start or key.It is not missing at all through the range of driving speeds and the rev counter dos'nt vary.IT never cuts out whilst driving or any loss of power Help! There's no 1.4 CC; so it's either a 1.6 or not a CC.

Must be years since I last saw a car equipped with CB Radio, in any country, not just the UK. Which leads me to wonder...
Will it ever be as popular as it was in the 80s? Are CB and ham radios covered by the same legislation as mobile phones? (i.e. fines for using one while driving?)

Bought a set for SWMO Getz as all three rubbers were splitting. Refills and their end clips appeared to be too wide for existing blades. Could not get the new blades to fit on the arms , carefully checked that I'd selected the correct adaptor.
Eventually removed the new rubbers and fitted them to old blades. Fed up as I've probably spent too much effort and money on the job.
Had a similar problem with a 1997 Corsa recently.
I conclude the universal adaptors are not what they seem. I'll ask an assistant to fit them next time.

I have had the adaptor problem with Halfords blades but managed to reuse some plastic bits from the old set. Last year I bought Bosch, from Halfords but they only lasted about a year.

I have just replaced with an Aldi set at £4.99 which are fine at the moment so I bought some for stock! They lack the aerofoil though so I have to keep the speed below 100mph ;-(

hi guys, I have a Peugeot 307 sw petrol 03 and done 92k miles, the engine mgn light came on, and on the screen it said engine antipollution system faulty, now, I have changed the entire exhaust system inc the cat but not genuine, three weeks after the light came back and the same text on the screen, the car also sounded very rough and loosing power, there is also an hissing sound coming from the engine whenever I press the accelerator, I?ve had it plugged up, code is, P0420, and said (fault location)Catalytic converter system, bank 1 - efficiency below threshold, (Probable cause) catalytic converter wiring, H02S 2, now this was check by my local mechanic and not the dealer, but recently I had it plug up by the Dealer and the reading was Catalytic ageing, so they said because I haven?t put a genuine cat on, so I need to put a genuine cat on and this should solved the problem, which would be £580.00 for the cat only, can you clarefy what the problem might be, if i can avoid going to the dealers i would be greatful, cheers Read more

Fortunately; it's only the diesels that are encumbered with the ridiculous additive system. Just carefully swap the oxygen sensor[s] and bolt it on.

As the post-cat sensor only monitors the cat, it will never know that the rest of the system came from India. [Unless there are any leaks in it.]

They will also need to clear the P0420 code; but the light will go out on it's own - eventually.

We hear a lot of moans about the complxity of modern cars, with even a bulb change being a dealer job, but it wasn't always like that. Can you remember a car where maintainence was a doddle?

Mine was probably a Morris Marina. It was just as well as it needed lots of work, but most jobs could be done from under the bonnet with one of those bicycle multi spanners. IIRC the camshaft could be withdrawn through the front of the block after removing the radiator grill, and the lever arm front shocks were about ten minutes a side.

Morris minor MM - Sv 918cc 1949 (or possibly even 48?) - one of the originals with not even a water pump, and only a single wiper, and dipping to a single headlight. Fitted with famous spacer on the bumper bars.

First bit welding I ever did, Dexion as a front cross -member.

Next easiest was probably a Hillman Imp - I could get the engine+gearbox out in less than 30 minutes. Quickest way to change the no4 sparkplug.

Hello, This morning a very cold night we had the astra was outside like it usually is the car was a bit hestitent to start.

I have noticed this over the last 2 weeks with it been cold,

I ran the car to the supermarket & back then left it for 3 hrs and tested the battery, the voltage was at 11.93v and started it up it's charging ok at around 14.44.

This is not a maintennance free battery so removed the caps and plenty of electrolite is present above the plates, but the green light is non existent?

Im a bit reluctant to put the drop tester over it im guessing this is still under a 3yr warranty? the car is a 56 reg, vx will know by the burn marks on the terminal somebody has been "playing"

Are these covered by warranty before i go moaning to vauxhall? is it a swap it and no charge to me?
Many thanks Tony. Read more

Also said my glove box light was sticking on with too much stuff in there!

If the Astra electrics are anything like my Vectra-C, then the interior lights, boot light and glovebox light automatically turn themselves off after approx 5 mins to save them from being accidentally left on and draining the battery.

EDIT: just looked at a 2007 Astra handbook and it says the following

"Battery discharge protection - To prevent the battery from becoming discharged, the courtesy light, reading lights, luggage compartment lighting and glove compartment lighting switch off automatically 10 minutes after the ignition is switched off."

We have a 54 Espace 33000 miles with full service history with Renault. We went out the other evening and had loss of power and it started to make a grinding noise. Called the RAC who recommended we do not drive the car as he thought there was a fault with the turbo.

Since then we have taken the car to a Renault dealership and had diagnosis and found it to be the turbo and intercooler. We were quoted £2000 for parts and labour. We are waiting to hear from Renault Customer Service to see what assistance they can give. They have acknowledged this problem should not have occurred and no one else has had this problem..............

You need to know how much the service was missed by. I believe there's a 1000 mile allowance.

If a service has been missed then Renault UK won't want to know. You should have spotted it before you bought it. Hopefully you bought the car from a dealer and I would then see what legal action could be taken against the dealer.

Was it a Renault dealer?

I have found Renault UK to be quite generous in out-of-warranty payouts.

Only owned this car for 3 weeks. Done 7000 since new (Aug 07). Not had any problems with it until this morning. I washed my car and then tried starting it - it didn't start. Tried again, it did start, but revving very slowly. After a few seconds it picked up and was fine. Moved my car up my driveway. Turned off engine, locked it and went off to do other things. Few hours later, returned to drive car. It started fine, drove off down the road and noticed the engine maintenance light was showing on the dashboard.

Rang Mitsubishi roadside assistance who said if the car was driving fine (which it is) then it's probably just the sensor and needs to be reset at a dealer. However, i'm not happy about this. Has anyone had a problem with this light coming on for apparently no obvious reason? I am thinking it's connected to me washing the car and then moving it straight away whilst it was still dripping wet. Maybe one of the leads got damp?

Would be interested to hear other people's experiences with this - will pop it into local dealer on monday to get it checked out just in case

It could be something to do with excess fuel as the car was stopped soon after starting?

Although we often move our CZ1 out of the drive and back again and it's never lit up, or after being washed (with a hose).

I did drive a Peugeot company car with the EML on for 18mths - dealer would fix it and it would come back again in a few days.

Cars do throw up random errors - my Merc told me the front parking light had failed yesterday - got out and looked it was on. Got home and turned the engine off then back on again and the malfunction warning was gone.

In August 08 I bought my second 1.4 CVT Jazz i-DST CVT Sport 7 to replace the older one that I liked so much. I had used several accessories in the older model without any problems at all but the first time I plugged my rather old TomTom satnav into the new Jazz it failed when I started the engine.

I put that down to the age of the satnav (5 years) and thought little more of it. However, I then plugged my motorbike GPS (TomTom Rider) into the cigarette lighter socket and that, to my horror, instantly expired on starting the engine. I immediately checked the voltage at the lighter socket with the engine running and found that it was never less than 14.65 volts and switching loads in and out (lights, aircon) at one point it reached 14.8 volts. With every possible load on the system from lights etc it never drops below 14.65 volts.

I believe the alternator upper limit should be set at 14.2 +/- 0.2 volts as seems to be confirmed by my checks on another car and my BMW motorbike. Since my accessories had previously worked faultlessly on the previous Jazz, my Omega and BMW motorbike I concluded that the new Jazz is faulty in respect of the alternator voltage. I have communicated this, and the amount of my financial loss (with evidence of purchase costs) to the Honda dealer at Oxford from whom I bought the car, but they haven't even bothered to acknowledge receipt of my letter. Am I correct in thinking that the alternator is putting out too much voltage? Read more

Thanks. You will see that I am going to check again with my old analogue meter which, according to the helpful article another referred me to, is going to be more accurate. Will let all know the results as soon as I can find the old CT471 ex-RAF test meter I have stored away somewhere.
