hi guys, I have a Peugeot 307 sw petrol 03 and done 92k miles, the engine mgn light came on, and on the screen it said engine antipollution system faulty, now, I have changed the entire exhaust system inc the cat but not genuine, three weeks after the light came back and the same text on the screen, the car also sounded very rough and loosing power, there is also an hissing sound coming from the engine whenever I press the accelerator, I?ve had it plugged up, code is, P0420, and said (fault location)Catalytic converter system, bank 1 - efficiency below threshold, (Probable cause) catalytic converter wiring, H02S 2, now this was check by my local mechanic and not the dealer, but recently I had it plug up by the Dealer and the reading was Catalytic ageing, so they said because I haven?t put a genuine cat on, so I need to put a genuine cat on and this should solved the problem, which would be £580.00 for the cat only, can you clarefy what the problem might be, if i can avoid going to the dealers i would be greatful, cheers

P0420 is very common in this situation. You must use a genuine cat on these - and many other cars.
Cheap, fast-fit quality, 3-week life, cats are only to scrape an MOT and then sell it. They've barely a tenth of the precious metals of a genuine cat - see how little the scrappies give you for them - you can get more for one genuine cat than ten non-gen.
Is the hissing coming from the exhaust to manifold flange? That would confirm a failed cat.

cheers Screwloose,
when i took it to the dealer to be pluged up the reading was (ageing Cat) so they said it needed a geniune cat which will be £580, fitted
the hissing is comming from the engine, i've taken it to two local garage, and even though the hissing is so loud they still could not find where it was comming from, it is a snake type on hissing, they've checked for split cables but none, remove a few caps but still nothing, and it is getting louder.
So you think a geniune Cat will solved the problem, as ive said it sounded really rough at the moment and it i goes on the motoway 15min on there doing arround 73mph the light's on again.
cheers screwloose, awaiting your reply.

The best way to check for an exhaust hiss is to lift it up and listen from underneath.
The spring-loaded flange opens up under pressure in the exhaust when revved. Often spits sparks too.
There are exhaust back-pressure testing kits; but this sounds bad enough to find with an eyeball.

hi Screwloose,
When i'm putting this genuine Cat on, what else do they need to do, do they need to bleed, refilled, fill, or reset any thing in conjunction with the Cat?
would it be more effective putting an entire geniune exhaust system on, and not just the Cat? because if i just put the geniune Cat on, the middle and back would still not be geniune, what do you think?
Cheers

Fortunately; it's only the diesels that are encumbered with the ridiculous additive system. Just carefully swap the oxygen sensor[s] and bolt it on.
As the post-cat sensor only monitors the cat, it will never know that the rest of the system came from India. [Unless there are any leaks in it.]
They will also need to clear the P0420 code; but the light will go out on it's own - eventually.
