about 6 months ago i had a lot of play in my steering so i had it replaced, i also had the front wishbones replaced at the same time. Everything was good for a month or so then i started to get a slight knock from the front of the car. Took the car to 2 different garages and they could hear and feel the knock through the steering wheel but could find nothing wrong.

So 5 months later and the knocking has gotten worse. You can feel the knocking through the steering wheel and seems to be as though its coming from the front passenger side wheel area.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem as im supposed to be driving to dorset on friday night and im not looking forward to it in the cars present state. I looked on here and wondered if it is the what some people have said on other threads, strut top bushes, drop links ?

hope some one can help, its driving me crazy Read more

a common fault with these cars are the antirollbar drop links. try moving antirollbar up-down check for free play in balljoints.

Looking at a Focus for my wife, after a pre reg or 57 plate. Can anyone advise on the difference between the 1.6 and 1.8. The bhp is quite similar. Ive driven the 1.8 and found it a bit rough. Apparenty the 1.6 is the PSA unit which if its the same one then a friend has one in his Peugeot 308 and it seems very refined.
Also ive noticed that the 1.6 tdci's are generally more expensive. A lot of the car supermarket websites dont have the 1.6. I guess they are all ex rentals. Is the 1.8 an old engine ready to be replaced?

I have a 1.8, but have driven a 110 1.6 . 1.6 is very quiet and super smooth. However 1.8 has a lot of pull and in my opinion is fun one to drive.

Not sure what the 1.6 90hp is like and if its still avaiable on 2007-8 models.

My hdi 90 estate in L spec seems to have lost power to the centre console display: strangely the text is only very faintly visible in daylight and invisible in the dark (that is with the ignition on). The radio/cd is working. I cannot remember if the appearance of this fault coincided, or not, with illumination of the engine management warning light which has been on for the last 3000 miles (holiday motoring). Does anyone have any thoughts on the remedy of the console display. Cheers cbmilly Read more

The display is usually illuminated by 3 bulbs behind it.
Remove the plastic covers at each side and there are hex screws to remove the display (non-sat. nav. version).
There are 3 bulbs in the back. Turn each to release and replace.

Im after a car for business, mondeo size with a budget of around £10 - £11k.
Ive looked at a 57' plate passat and like the car but have heard a few problems with water leaks etc. Can anyone recommend a good car for my budget? Im after something with low miles on 10k, as il be putting a few miles on with business use.
The Peugeot 407 is quite cheap and the Honda Accord gets a good write up on the cdti engines.
After working the motortrade for 3 years its now my turn to buy a car!

Advice gladly received

I'd go with either an Octavia, Passat or Mondeo. The Passats wear quite badly after 100k miles, so if you're going to keep it longer than that then I'd stick with the Octavia or Mondeo.

X20XEV Engine-2 thin tubes left side camshaft cover.

There are 2 thin tubes running along left side of camshaft cover (adjacent to cam belt cover).

One tube runs along left side of camshaft cover, all way round over top of engine.

Other tube goes to middle of camshaft cover, then goes under the spark plug cover.

What are these tubes ??

I am particularly interested in the first one that goes all way round over top of engine, as the outer insulation has broken off in one place.

As said; those are the sheathings protecting the cables going to the crank sensor and the cam sensor.

If they're cracking-up; a few turns of good quality insulation tape [or convoluted split over-sheath, if you can source it from somewhere like LSUK] will prevent any further deterioration.

Seems to be a trend heading south:

Lincoln leads, other towns and cities follow.

My girlfriend recently bought a Fiesta as her first car. It all worked fine but one day it refused to go in to gear.
Basically the biting point of the clutch was through the floor so we replaced the master cylinder (which was pretty messy and broken) and bled the clutch thoroughly. After a slight crunch to get it in to reverse the car drove normally in all gears.
It was then left to sit for 24 hours and now it's back to square one.
When put in to reverse it crunches and you have to force it and when it's there it makes a rather nasty whining noise.
The forward gears are all the same except they have more of a rattly flappy sound to them.
All gears are accessible when the engine is turned off.

Any ideas?
Thank you for your help, this is her first car and she passed her test today only to find that her car is still broken after we fixed it. As you can imagine she's pretty upset and so am I.
Thanks in advance, Sam. Read more

Unfortunately I cannot check this as it's hidden deep within the clutch assembly and I lack the required equipment to get at it :(

So it looks like it's a garage jobby? :(

The Ford Focus III (facelift model) is available in the Ghia trim level in the Republic of Ireland. Does anyone know whether this version will be introduced to the UK? I suppose it would be completely silly to import one from Ireland?

That's obviously Ford's thinking as well.

As has been said they do the Ghia Focus in Eire and elsewhere and the Ghia Mondeo here, in fact if you add all the goodies I think the Ghia is the Mondeo that can be specced highest.

(Sorry the Mondeo link in my last post was in error)

Been meaning to ask this question for some time, but a slightly late overtake today has reminded me.

We've all done it, i know i have and i'll bet everyone here has too, overtaking a little bit late and cutting it fine.

OK, i'm in me truck today on a town bypass about 4 miles long, you know the sort constructed about 10 years ago, wide enough for a centre lane, but the planners made the thing 2 lane instead of dualling, can't have the proletariat getting a move on can we.

I'm not doing quite the 40mph pedant, i'm in the words of my very competent HGV trainer 'maintaining normal progress', anyway i spy in the mirror a van overtaking me, he's left it a little late, so i ease the truck over close to the n/s verge to give him some room, no probs he's by without drama and flashes a thankyou..so far so good.
But as is nearly always the case, the driver(s) coming the other way maintain there speed and trajectory, hugging the crown of the road, what this achieves i don't get, to be fair there wasn't the flashing headlamps and hand signs that sometimes accompany a late overtaker, but no attempt to give a little room either.

If the lead car coming the other way just eased a little over to the left as well, we would all be safer, no one needs to brake or take any evasive manoeuvres, just move 3 ft to the left.

I truly believe that some drivers would sooner have a head on smash with a late passer than just ease over a bit to the left and make everyone's day safer.

I also by the way on similar width roads get over to the left side if there is an oncoming tractor, so the vehicles coming the other way can get by, many still don't take advantage, but most good drivers don't need a second invitation.

Whats with this my space/punishment/whatever goes through drivers heads, why would someone risk being maimed or worse instead of using the width and a little common courtesy or even a bit of live and let live.

Sorry, i tend to waffle a bit...ok a lot.

No-one hates dangerous overtakers more than myself - the kind who overtake on a bend on a single carriageway not legislating for the fact that they are not the only idiot on the road and there could be some chump tearing from the opposite direction doing a ton. However there seems to be a huge number of drivers on the road who spend more time looking for and pointing out other people's mistakes, or what they deem to be mistakes, so they've got an excuse to flash their lights or test their horn, rather than concentrating on their own driving. In my opinion, if the driver coming in the opposite direction has time to flash you 15 times, and you've got time to go through the thought processes and actions required to flick them the bird before they've passed, then it was all just a fuss about nothing.
