What other manufacturer made this motor I need this cap right NOW! please. Thank You Read more

Isn't the Geo a US version of the Suzuki Swift, I don't know if they did the 3 cylinder version in the UK though.

I always find it totally amazing why drivers with attemp to drive though flood water that is deeper than the clearance under their car. On the news this morning there were videos of several cars stuck in 50cm of water or more. Gone are the days of timing chains and relatively sealed engines, cam belts, mud and stones do mot mix well. Nor does a hot cat and emersion in stone cold water. Regards Peter Read more

Assuming it's an Altea - won't there just be a can of goo where the spare should be?

My in-laws have been talking about changing their car Audi A4 Avant tdi w reg 80k fsh immaculate condition. My wife and i were trying to encourage them to go for something more economical with lower emissions ie cheaper travelling, and avoiding diesel because of their tendancy to engine failure.
Unfortunately they have experienced engine failure fortunately close to the Audi garage who said they should not drive it and lent them an 08 2k A4 Avant tdi.
Repair will cost 3k- as much as the car is worth. The Audi garage, which also deals in VWs, have offered the 08 for 19k keeping the old car.
We are concerned they are being pushed into this deal and are not free to make a choice.
Is this a fair deal? what other options do they have? Read more

>19k for the 08 seems steep?

Depends on the engine and spec. It might be only a few months old and the list price new may have been £24k or more.

I've got an xreg A4 saloon TDI 115 and it's a quality product. If they can get their car repaired for a reasonable cost it would have a fair bit of life left in it.

The instrument cluster only has one 1 working indicator light (left side). The audible feedback that the indicators are on isn't working either. I've checked round the car and all the external lights are working fine. The indicators flash at what I think is the right rate, and turn on and off fine with the hazards and the normal stalk switch.

This isn't my car but I understand it has been this way for a good few months.

To fix this will it need a new instrument cluster?

In its current state of every external light working fine but without the correct feedback inside the car, will it be an MOT fail? Read more

I've always assumed it was the flasher relay that made the clicking noise - is it done electronically now, with a separate sounder for the click?

Why do HGVs/buses have near horizontal steering wheels and cars have near vertical ones?

Some other BL stuff had near horizontal steering wheels, the original Mini, the big saloon we called a land crab and Morris 1100/1300s.

I am getting very wet carpets in the driver's side footwell, which leaves the carpet wet back to the rear passengers seat. The drivers door is letting water in because the internal (cardboard type) door panel gets wet at the bottom.

The problem I have is that I think I might have two seperate points where water is getting in because I cannot see how it gets from the inside of the door down to the carpet, despite sitting in the car when it's raining and looking for leaks.

The door seems to have had a knock at some point so the rubber fitting between the outside of the window and the door, does not sit flush against the window. But I thought there should be a seal inside of the door in any case so that any water getting into the door would not reach the interior panel of the door. This does not seem to be happening. Another possible ingress point is from the top of the engine bay - I had a couple of floodings due to leaf litter blocking the scutcheon drain points (under the top corners of the bonnet) - the whole area was filled with water, and as the water level rose, it leaked into the car passenger compartment... make sure that it drains OK when filled from a hose. I had to jet these clear (at the front corners)

I have a humming noise which can be heard when the car is stationary or when im braking. The noise is a lot louder when the air filter and the air intake tube are removed. If I tap the gas pedal the sound goes away but always returns. My mechanic had a quick look but is scratching his head. It sound like a very noisey fan with drying bearings. Any Ideas? Read more

I have often read on this forum that one should continue using an old reliable car until it is dead. What are the signs that that a car needs to be inevitably replaced? Read more

>>beyond economic repair.

I'm not sure what this phrase means. I suppose it means different things to different people at different times.

Or, rephrasing, during times of riches and profligacy, like the last 30 years or so, cars will have been scrapped which might otherwise be repaired in more austere times.

Just had the cylinder head replaced on R-reg 306. Now it won?t tick-over properly and it?s drinking petrol. The tickover is very uneven and probably varies by 2-300 revs, running alright for a few seconds before rising and dropping. throttle setting is OK when driving.
The garage who did the head say they can?t see why it?s doing it. Any thoughts please ?

Check the throttle position sensor. Mine used to do the same. I just unplugged it cleaned the pins and put it back together and it's been fine ever since. What do you call bad fuel consumption? the 1.6 should do between 35 - 40mpg.
