The first thing I'd do is check all of the fuses.

Thought it was time to build the perfect car using parts from any and all. This started when i was driving home yesterday in rain that varied between monsoon and intermittent, and my wipers adjustment was simply not up to the job.
So my first perfect part are the adjustable wipers from an MG Maestro, 10 seperate settings for intermittent and a top speed that was faster and smoother than the car.
Right all i need now is the rest of the car Read more

Spot on.
Cars are treated like white goods but many (most) users have no idea how things work.
There is no real incentive as realiability improves.
I appreciate many of the bells and whistles on my Mondeo, some are nice and others are "should be standard on all cars"

Proper tyre pressure monitors that can be trusted and do not need fancy tweeking when changing a wheel are IMO one of the the most important requirements on all cars.
Almost every day I see tyres that are low on pressure (and I am now a low mileage user.) High profile tyres made loss of pressure easier to see.
Low profile tyres cause me to be a little concerned on every trip.

Alerting the user to a serious problem is a real ****
Shout at them?, Put it into limp home mode the next time it stops ( lane 3 of the M25 ?)
put the hazard flashers on?
Some are so thick nothing will work while others will panic if a voice from the foot well
says " Danger stop immediately!"
A choice of voice ? A. Darling has a turn of phrase!, SWMBO, Maggie ( This car is not for turning )
Any other suggestions.

A graphic display showing a failed bulb is another must ( My Mondeo has a good example of this)

Easy change parts include things like .
A small ding in the corner of a bumper. today A whole bumper not just a corner is needed.

How hard can it be? Why is the area around the thermostat housing so cramped? Does the process of disconnecting & reconnecting the hose require the services of a contortionist?
A wasted day, bad back and leaking coolant... Does anyone have any tips for phase II tomorrow?

Hi everyone

I'm looking for a new car after having my R-reg Fiesta for 6 years!

I've test driven the usual suspects - Mazda 2 (bit too unresponsive for me), Honda Jazz (loved it) and the Hyundai i10 (very nippy and responsive but unsure for motorway driving)

I will mainly be using the car for general city road driving and A-roads but may occasionally go on shortish motorway journeys at the weekend.

I am going to wait for the new Fiesta and Jazz to come out before test-driving those. Also going to test drive a Suzuki Swift and a Corsa tomorrow.

I will probably try to get a used example, as I don't do a lot of miles per year (max 5000) so it'd be a waste of money to get a really expensive car, unless it was pleasurable to drive - the Jazz was exactly that, whereas the Mazda 2 felt quite underpowered.

Any suggestions on a car that I haven't thought about?

Thanks.

Btw - I notice from HJ's review of my car that I've been using the wrong oil for the last 5 years!

Though I've never had a problem with the camshaft - but then - it is lightly used.

I'll start using 5/30 from now on.

I have a VW Passat 2002 (B5.5), 2.0L, 85kW automatic.

I had to replace the Yaw rate sender (G202), and people here adviced me to try only to clean the connectors. This is what i did, for now.
Ths scanning also show that the driver's door latch need to be replaced (I had some problems with locking the drivers door).
After changing the door latch on Fri., the car was connected to the VAS 50/51 scanner to reset the error code.
After checking the operating of the new latch, I've notice that when leaving the windows open and then lock the car with the remot, the windows does not close. before changing the latch it did!
The manager told me that it is done (the option cancelled) automaticly by the VAS computer up to order from VW, because they had some legal demand (prosecution) about this (accidents with kids hands).

When I use the key to lock and hold it, the windoes close, and when using to open and hold, the windows open. With the remote it's not open nither close.
Do anyone ever hear about this issue, that VW cancelled this option while scanning?

Is there an option to bypass it with VAG-COM?

Thank you (Sorry if I'm not clear with my English)
Shmuel

I had this feeling too (cock and bull), so I wrote today a letter to the Customer Service unit of the importer (called here "Champion Motors"), to ask if it's true or a story just to cover the damage they made to the unit.

Hamsafar -
I had this feature on my previous Golf (2001) and I have it also on my current Golf TSI (2008). If I will not have another choise, I will look for an option to bypass it with someone having Vag-com.

Thank you all for your replys. I will update here when I have something new.

Partners VW Sharan is coming up to three years old. Just received a letter from VW offering some kind of extended warranty. Car has had nothing done under warranty in the last 3 years / 45K bar faulty parking sensors (which was the kids fault as they dropped a juice cup in the control unit under the passenget seat - dealer told us it was our fault, but fixed under warranty as "goodwill")

We did originaly plan to change it at 3 years, but given the fact its been trouble free to date think we will hold on to it (plus would like to see what the new Sharan is like next year). This leads to a couple of questions - should we just wing it and not bother with the extended warranty, and if we do go with the warranty are they any good (I know some of the aftermarket ones are a bit dubious) Anyone has any experiences of the VW extended warranty programme?

Can't offer any advice specific to VW, but as a concept extended warranties are usually just a way to extract money. Whether you choose one or not, you are taking a bet. So if your car has proved reliable, keep up a reasonable level of servicing and keep your warranty cash; or put monthly warranty payments in a piggy-bank and have a good day out when you haven't needed to spend it.

Hi,

Seen some great bargains on the market lately with regards to the Astra. The 170ps and 200ps models on 05/55 plates can be picked up for around the £6-7k mark now, in excellent condition. Also there's a few 1.9CDTI 150's showing up too for around the same price range.

Just wondering with this car, is torque steer still an issue with this chassis? Does it only really show its head when your full throttle trying to launch the car from standstill? Looks to be a good car otherwise.

No to tuning boxes!!! A lot of Fiat JTD (same engine) owners have done the same to find their common rail cracking over time costing them loads. A proper remap is far better, doesnt just focus on upping the rail pressure.

Speaking to the guy who did my previous remap (who air on the side of caution rather than full out aggressiveness), 200bhp is a remap that is on the edge of the engine, 185bhp is a much safer target. Still leaves me with a common rail engine that could be a potential nightmare should it break.

As for 200bhp in diesel form for this chassis, not so sure. To get 200bhp at 4k rpm means a lot of torque, which I fear will exasperate the current chassis setup. I've read some feedback for Astra 888 owners (they come as 200bhp diesels as standard) who also comment on horrendous torque steer when at full throttle.

Cheers for the suggestion, but I've already looked into it :-(
