Hi everyone

C240 1998 model, 190K miles. Up to now fairly trouble free.

Coming home tonight (28 mile drive), stopped at lights. On green light I put foot down on gas, and car was very sluggish, reluctantly pulling away and didn't seem to shift. 2K revs and not moving that fast. Seemed to pull OK once over 40mph, though. Hard to tell 'cos traffic quite heavy.

Another 2 miles to home - but when I slowed to park in a space, forward drive failed - lever in drive but no forward motion when foot on gas! Put in reverse - same thing - just rolled foward (parked on slight downward slope).

I moved slector lever forward and backward - still no movement, but engine was reving OK - I didn't rev too hard as cars were in front and behind and I didn't want it to suddenly leap forwards.

Left it switched off for about 10 minutes - and it started working again! I parked it properly - forward and reverse working fine - But of course I don't really want to drive it in case it happens half way along the A2...

Any idea what's wrong (and how much this is going to cost???)

Any feedback gratefully received. Of course I'll be calling my specialist first thing - what else can I do? But some ideas of what might be the problem would be helpful (even including change that car!!)

Thanks

Richard

Either it's losing fluid, or there's a electronic/solenoid fault.

It is possible to access fault-codes and data from the transmission ECU.

This is my second post, after researching some ideas of potential cars that interest myself and my budget I think ive found a good car/insurance combo.

Car - 2000 VAUXHALL ASTRA 1.6i 16V SXi 3dr Hatchback
68,000 miles

Has 1 year mot + 6months tax. 2 previous owners, good condition inside and out.

0-62 in 10.5
average 38mpg
insurance group 6

Insurance ive got is 3rd party, because i cant have a "good" (in my eyes) car for my budget, my mums agreed to be the main driver person and i'll use it too. Ive got insurance for £900 annually or £79 a month.

The asking price is £1600 but WhatCar valued it at £1,600. So im going to offer £1400 and get a viewing sometime soon.

Personal opinions? I appriciate anyones input! thanks Read more

Hi everyone. Me and the wife are looking to trade in our 06 reg Hyundai Getz in the next month for another "supermini" on a PCP deal to save some money. I was wondering which cars out of this class are worth buying? (Air Con is a must, as well as a frugal engine)

Let me give you some background on what I do, and what I need the car for. I'm Kitchen Manager for a local "Meals On Wheels" concern, so I do a lot of stop start driving, and I will need a big boot (as well as a strong clutch!) I also do about 30 miles a day on the A14.

I have been offered a 58 reg Ford Fiesta 1.25 Style Climate for £6995 (Outgoing model) for £139pm. Is this a good deal? I had one as a loan car and it seemed to drink fuel. Is this normal?

Thanks for your time :) Read more

The best? One that's still in the showroom. (With apologies to MichaelR...)

Haynes recommends putting a sealing compound to the end bearing caps when re-fitting the camshaft. Anyone know what sealing compound or what's best? Thank you Read more

I've a feeling that Rhodorseal 5661 was the tipple of choice around then - shouldn't think it makes a lot of difference which RTV you choose.

Lucky 7

Hi all

Not feeling my user name is very apt at the moment. Having just fixed my new car, at the age of 26 I've now suffered my first ever knock - managed to reverse it into a taxi. Very low speed and have only scuffed his bumper - however it's an 07 reg car. We swapped details and carried on our ways, and his company have just been in touch.

I have suggested to them that I would prefer to settle directly if possible - however, given the fact that he's a taxi driver, it's probably a leased car and it'll probably be through their repairer, even if he agrees I'm expecting a ridiculous figure back - so it'll mean a claim.

Annoyingly I have just changed insurer - have two years NCB with Direct Line but was a named driver on my mum's policy with them for three years previously ( had another 2 years NCB before that but it expired), however got a better renewal quote from Halifax

Guess I'll have to take the hit on my premium, and then probably change my car (Mondeo Si) for a much smaller one to try and claw some of it back.
Obviously it's a pretty run of the mill accident - just thought I would ask for any advice on not getting hammered too badly by my insurers! I do have a direct number for the cabbie, but given the above I doubt it'll be "Yeah, £50 should do it mate"

P.S. I have admitted liability, as it was my fault! Someone's probably going to tell me that if I'd done a runner they might not have bothered pursue it, but guess there's such as thing as karma and all... :-)

Cheers all Read more

Agree with others - use your insurance company but they'll love the fact you admitted liability at the scene.

I have what appears to be a already diagnosed problem with my Y reg Ford Focus 1.6.

A fan that only works on setting 4
A air con light that only comes on when the fan is set to 1-3
Recirc works (light and function) fine

I understand from previous posts that this requires a new fan resistor pack... Can anyone tell me where/how to find it in the car and can a novice can change it.

I have already spoken to a my local AA approved garage who have told me the heater needs changing... so am a little fearful of getting fleeced!

Many Thanks

I have a vectra 1995 (2.0). . . I notice water diappearing from water resevoir every two days. check all pipes for broken pipe but all are fine. I noticed every time after a drive water is dripping from under bonnet. Have established that water leakes from something where small hoses coming from the engine and going into the cabin connectl about three hoses are connected to this part. Why is this so. The part does no appear to be broken and this happens only after a drive and when park.
Have removed the large hose under the inlet manifold and there are no cracks in the pipe!!

air-con shut off valves switch off the coolant flow to the heater matrix. Hence they leak coolant when they fail. valve has three coolant pipes and one small vacuum pipe.

Have just received a bill for 113 Euros for unknowingly driving a hire car in Pisa's congestion zone in May 2007 ! Apparently many Italian cities have these and they are not well marked and only in Italian of course.
They have I year after getting your details from the hire company to bill you and 16 months delay is not uncommon. It seems I have to pay up but I am not happy especially as if they had sent the bill promptly exchange rates would have made it 30% less! Read more
