BazzaBear {P}

I've finally remembered to put some pictures from my Eruotrip onto the internet. On the basis that many of them are of two particularly petrol-head destinations (Millau and the Stelvio pass) I thought they might be of vague interest to people on here. There aren't very many of them, because I've never got the hang of remembering to take photos, and when I do remember, they're generally not very good anyway.

Whole trip was 3200 miles, about 60 hours in the driving seat with an average speed of 55mph (which is surprisingly high I think). Read more

Surely it wil be a "magneti Marrelli"?

Can't vouch for the alternator specifically, but all the electronic bits you can get at are made in Germany these days. ECU's are all Bosch for example.

Can anyone of you guys help me on this matter?

Mad Maxy

The hole in the trim and the 'extra' paint under the bumper deserve to be fixed without quibble. Should have been spotted at dealer prep stage; seems like dealer had a lot on in run-up to 1 Sep - a reason for not taking delivery on that date!

Get them to do the light at the same time.

Hi all,
My engine emissions light came on as well as the ABS light. It was plugged in and the fault codes stated that the front lambda probe was faulty and the n/s front abs sensor was faulty. Both have been replaced, however the ABS light couldn't be extinguised - possibly due to a break in the wire somewhere. When I drove out of the garage the cat converter broke up so was replaced also! The car has been driven for about 50 miles and the emissions light has come back on again! Whats happening here?

It looks like someones tinkered with the engine before me, running a variable fuel manifold and theres a pipe from the small motor for cooling exhaust gases running into the air filter?

Also the brakes judder when you're at high speed - it runs smoothly and good when idle when you press the brakes at high speed you feel juddering through the steering wheel. I've now been told that it's possible that the discs are worn and it'll need new pads & discs - this might also solve the abs problem as the juddering might be sending false signals to the new sensor.

Please help! Read more

Hmmm, so it seems - strange because it garage I used are the local independant VW garage who have a good reputation but there's always a first time.

Whats bringing on the emissions light if both the lambda and cat converter have been replaced?

Why do I get brake judder through the steering wheel - is that a sensor problem or pads/discs?

I don't know where to find the engine code - It's registered in November 2001 and is the 2.0 GTI petrol model.

Subject,
*Stories of remarkable insights into `other people`, their cars, journeys and adventures*

Theme,
No negativity.
This thread is about the generosity of the Human spirit - or rather the fact that most people in life we meet are good and as in a transient wisp of a fragile flickering flame, brighten our lives before time moves on and we all submit as candidates for the fossil record..

Put simply,
If you want to attack or start an undercurrent of negativity and general nastiness don`t linger here. Need to state this because...

My own story concerns a couple and their caravan.

Some context.

Twenty three years ago, in a red 85 Polo C, following the route Napoleon- eventually fetching up in a natural hill amphitheatre - of a camp-site just East of Le Lavandou.

Following a windy night in a small tent, invited by another Brit into his caravan for tea.

A nice gesture, typical of an ageing second World War generation couple. Ourselves a week out from England, bad weather with little sleep and that on the ground. A nice touch, a gesture only 15 minutes or so, (wouldn`t want to intrude) but a distinct colonial touch about him as though we were being served tea in India, Hongkong perhaps?

Another bloke was around too, from the caravan next door.. but thought little of it all and got on with the trip, moving on again the next day.

Except, an approximate year later, passing across the area en route to Italy in a 2CV.. Called again at the same site.

It was of course the car I recognised first, a ten year old (now forgotten) Marina or Avenger- or similar. Went and said hallo and he remembered.

Different this year though, the other caravan had not returned. He told me that for nearly twenty years the two couples had met at this site, booking the same pitches next to each other.
You could imagine the scene. Wine and meals shared, weeks spent together under the pale blue skies and wildflowers, for these were retired and relaxed people in the tranquility of France.

But the other `swallow` had not returned this year and never would..

It came out, their story, told under disappointment but understanding of the inevitable - in a way made easier perhaps, by the transient nature of our contact.

Overarching.. They did not know where their friends came from. Not even the City.

After initial friendship and contact on this site nearly twenty years ago " the time had past, it seemed wrong to ask"

Unbelievable? Very old time British, perhaps..

Their time was up too and he knew it. This Gentleman of at least 75, had driven his 10 year old `Marina` pulling a caravan out from England, with his wife confined to the caravan. She could no longer walk and was `van bound` from the driveway at home and for the whole duration of the trip.

I admired their spirit. Later we sent a postcard from the UK, addressed to the car `Morris Marina` at campsite x, France. Received a reply with an address in Kent.

I could not help but think of their lost contact with their caravanning friends. But maybe they all wanted it like that.

All gone now no doubt, while in the South of France, the Sun and sky look down on a different generation.

Not everything has to be planned

You're right - on my recent trip to the States - the unplanned and unexpected were the most engaging - savouring the moments now, the huge green/blue butterfly that was "sleeping" on a car tyre (I'll upload a picture shortly), the Orion P3 making a slow turn over Highway 1 over Portland, Maine. The breakfast in the diner on Main Street, Concorde Mass where the histories of our two nations clashed. The Anglophile cafe owner in Gloucester, Maine who made a tepoted brew from proper British branded tea. Little things in reality but the making of a good road trip.

Hi all, me again !!

Another problem that came shortly after my initial problems with my multifunction display is my Parking Sensors.

They worked without problem for the first 6 months, then all of a sudden they stopped working.

For example, I reversed into my Mum & Dads driveway and they worked. I drove from there to my house, again reversed in to my driveway and they weren't working. They haven't worked since.

I do have a Peugeot fixed tow bar and electrics fitted. And I do tow a caravan. And the sensors have intermittently stopped working after I unplugged the caravans electrics. but when I turned the car off and on again they worked. This happened about twice since I've had the car.

I've had the car on the PSA diag system and the Parking sensors are reported to have no malfunction, despite me getting that long beep when engaging reverse to tell me there is a problem.

The PSA diag system was showing readings that the sensors thought that the object was 100's of feet away, depite the object being right behind it.

Any ideas on this one???

Hi,

looking for a bit of help with this one.

Does anyone know for definite, on a base model KIA RIO, should the central locking system operate from the passengers front door lock with the key.

The central locking operates fine from the drivers door lock as normal, but when you go to the passenger door, only THAT door unlocks and locks using the key.

I believe this to be correct operation of the central locking system on this car, but i need to be sure, therefore i ask your advice.

FYI, the car does not have remote central locking, Just a plain key and two door locks.

IF the car is supposed to lock/unlock from either door, any pointers as to why it does'nt from the passenger side.

Two seperate KIA dealers have given me conflicting advice as to the correct operation of this system, hence why i'm here now.

Many thanks

I had a few of these as courtesy cars a few years back, and can confirm that there is only one master CL mechanism, on the driver's side.

Indeed ISTR a small batch of these came into the country in around 2001 set up the wrong way around, so that they only worked from the passenger side (bit of a nightmare to fix I would imagine for the dealer as well). Not the first time that's happened on a LHD-RHD conversion I'm sure.

Hi, can anyone offer advice.

I ordered a Hyundai i10 in May, trading in a 5 yr old BMW 520 as part ex. The dealer signed a contract to supply with an agreed part ex allowance. There have been severe delays. The dealer contacted me in July to say they would honour the contract even though the list price had gone up.

Now the dealer has phoned to say they want to get out of supplying the car altogether, because the part-ex value of my car has gone down.

Has anyone else encountered this, or have any advice on what to do? Read more

Quite right - sorry I edited "I can" from my post as I felt a wave of petrol engined emotion overwhelm me !

Hey, y'all:

Here's a story that might make you cringe: One day when I was seventeen and had recently got my driving licence, my dear father decided he was going to take me out in his car and teach me to drive a manual transmission. (I had taken all my behind-the-wheel training on automatic cars, so this was entirely new to me) So, we hopped in his '76 AMC Hornet station wagon and headed out on an empty frontage road in Minnesota. Once there we switched seats and I *tried* to learn this.

No luck. I understood the concept perfectly in my head, but could not shift and do the clutch for anything. If I remember right, I killed the engine several times whilst my dad sat in the passsenger seat, growing increasingly angry at my incompetence..."(Swear words).............IT'S EASY! WHAT ARE YOU, LAZY?!?!?!"

After 20 minutes or so of me trying to learn this and failing, Dad getting more and more upset and me panicking, we gave up and Dad drove us home, me ashamed and Dad so angry he couldn't speak.

Question: I'm 44 years old now. Is it too late to try again? Should I just stick with the slushbox? I haven't tried again since then.

Hi folks, first post , but have had a good look first to see if there is similar post to answer my Q. but alas no.
My laguna11 1.9 dci 120bhp has developed a singular click/knock when you steer tightly left or right. , sometimes happens when turning the steering wheel when car is stationary lock to lock. can also happen when driving straight if I put the engine under load such as quick acceleration and will then click/knock when I brake again ( engine mount maybe??)
at the same time , what I just took to be torque steer ,being a fairly torquey engine is also giving cause for concern as seems to be worse know. The car pulls to the right under even light acceleration and when you come off the gas again the car pulls to the left ( tracking with new tyres just been done just incase), meanwhile feeling scarely vague. you can literally steer the car lane to lane on the motorway using only the gas pedal. Do you think these maters are connected in some way?? and what are the likely causes??

Hey,

Anyone remember the first time someone trusted them with their car?

I was 17 and my uncle chucked me the keys of a brand new Sierra XR4x4. On a G plate in moonstone blue. Giving my age away there! I assume I was insured as he was a car trader.

Blow me down, a few weeks later and I had to run an errand for the firm I worked for at the time - got chucked the keys for an 89 F plate Fiat Croma Turbo. That, if anything felt faster than the XR. The first time I felt torque steer at the chain bar roundabout. What was funny was that the Fiats rear leccy windows inexplicably started to wind themselves down on the M606.

I had the full, "check me out" thing going when I drove them. Naivly thinking that people cared.

Never forget the thrill of the drive.

I was 15 when my dad let me drive his 3 Series around the local sports centre car park, we had a quick "moment" when a police car pulled into the car park and then drove back out. That freaked us out enough to end our little driving lesson.

Other than that, possibly the nicest car I've driven was the dealer director's old S Type 3.0, now that was a smooth car. :-)
