Falkirk Bairn

According to a few articles re Scottish Police Cars the likes of Weight Watchers will be busy!.

Patrol cars - typically Focus/Astra have a weight limit and apparently 2 x overweight policemen/women can only take 1 x offender in the back - 2 x offenders and they have to call for another car/van.

Cars like lorries have maxm weights they can carry. Of course the typical patrol car carries a boot full of stuff already and this again limits the no of bodies it can carry.

During my two short careers as a South London minicab driver in 1973 and 1975, a period that has left an indelible and not all good (ask Ms Lud) mark on my personality, we used to joke that blues'n'twos meant the kebabs were getting cold. But it was only a joke. And plod could be jolly decent when he clocked you at 50 when you were working and had a punter aboard. Chapeau, in fact. That period in my life taught me many useful things, including the value of restraint, even caution, at the wheel and the practical, humane side of the traffic fuzz.

Hi Guys

Got a Pug 306 1.4 Meridian,

Something strange is happening with the air con??

After a while it switches itself on!!!!!! The AC green light comes on the dash.

It has happened once or twice before in the past, but this morning it happened 5 or 6 times within the 1st mile of my journey. Within 10 seconds of me turning it off it would switch itself back on

Thanks for looking any ideas

Could be that the fan speed knob had been set anti clockwise and when you do that fully it will try and reach the temperature you have set on the red and blue (temperature) knob. So if it was in the blue, it needs the aircon on to reach that cold temperature

Oh dear... does anyone know what this means? I've just attempted to do an HPI check for the Rover 75 I've been discussing but on entering the reg to get the vehicle details they don't find anything. This applies across more than one site including the 'proper' HPI one, and even on the search facilities for tyre places! I checked the service manual for the car and the same reg was written in the front of that... has anyone else encountered this before? I'm more than a tad concerned now :/ Read more

Just to follow up and subject myself to further embarrassment.. I got the reg. wrong, the car's already been HPI checked by the place I was going to, and did, buy the car from :/

Having owned one of these from new (not a bad car at all) in 1989 (sold within family in 1992) I'm surprised that there seem to be so few of them about now.

Maybe one day Fiat will actually make a car that will last for more than ten years like their German rivals?

Come to think of it I haven't seen an Uno for ages (I had two of those). Read more

No car is built to last forever >>

Nor would it be desirable.Just look at the advances in safety, comfort, reliability etc. over the last ten years.
Most of us would rather drive a newish car than a ten/twelve year old one.

Ive got high hopes and high expectations for my first car, so dont point that out!

Ive got around £1350 max to spend. Im looking for a car that fits these criteria:

Petrol
reasonably quick <12seconds 0-62
dont care about top speed as i wont be needing it ^^
nice looking
Ive got long legs so somthing roomy
insurance group <8
mpg minimum (urban driving) about 30+
reasonable repair costs + tax

anything else i think is just a bonus. Can someone recommend any types of cars etc?

Thanks in advance, Ash.

ps - ive spotted so far, honda civic 1997 1.4 - Fiat bravo 1.6 1999 - citroen saxo vtr 1999.

Just to add re: insurance. I was over 25 when I bought it (I'd lived in London for a while - no need for a car), so insurance for a 1.8 wan't too bad - for a 1.8, it was actually good. If you are younger than that I'm not sure how it would affect it.

I like the middle lane of the motorway. It suits me. I get a good view of all the traffic around me and I'm not constantly having to pull in or out or get boxed in behind slower traffic in the inside lane.

I also like doing 70mph - as fast as I can legally go.

Why is it then, there is a certain fraternity that pull out of the inside lane, come up behind me in the middle lane then indicate into the outside lane, pass me then slot back in to the inside lane to "overly demonstrate" that I shouldnt be in the middle lane. Or imply that I could/should move over as I am too far from the slower truck in the inside lane to warrant being in the middle lane at 70mph.

If drivers behind me are going to get so shirty about me in the middle lane at 70mph, then why do they hurl past me therefore breaking the speed limit?

Its either ironic, hypocritical or I'm paranoid.

Anyone on here care to admit to "lesson teaching"? Read more

This post reminds me of a track by Chuck Brodsky...'Blow 'em away' which we played whilst barrelling down Highway 50 from Tahoe earlier this year. Very much TIC, but funny lyrics ...the first time around.

My daughter is hoping to take a test soon and wants to buy a car to practise in and drive once she's passed her test. (she's unable to add herself to our cars insurance) She has a max of £1,500 and likes the Ka. At this price there are quite a few available. I have to go and look at a few in the next day or so, so is there anything I should look out for ( I believe they can have a tendency to rust) and is it a good buy? I have suggested a Micra myself but this is considered too 'old lady'. We have looked at Saxo too but that felt rather tinny and flimsy, and had no power steering. It also looked rather dated beside the Ka. Any thoughts anyone? Read more

I've owned several and driven a lot more-never had any problems at all-always made sure the plugs were greased. All except very early ones had PAS-tho' the steering was not heavy.Suprisingly good on motorways, outstanding in towns;don't go for ones with painted bumpers;the std.ones stand upto scratches and bumps and can be replaced at home-both front and rear come in three sections. The engine, whilst of old design,is reliable, has chain cam and is simple to work on and spares are cheap and easily available.I still drive a KA-tho' a 1.6-2.5 years old and not one concern.

Optimist

If the pessimistic approach is taken the first 58 plate any of us sees (if one is seen) should be a Hyundai I10, a Fiat 500, a mini Citroen, Peugot, Toyota or something along those lines or generally green and with low VED. I wonder.

So what was the first 58 plate you saw?
