If the pessimistic approach is taken the first 58 plate any of us sees (if one is seen) should be a Hyundai I10, a Fiat 500, a mini Citroen, Peugot, Toyota or something along those lines or generally green and with low VED. I wonder.
So what was the first 58 plate you saw?
Seen 3 already, 2 weeks ago actually, being prepped in a Police workshop oop Norff.
I think the "game" is to spot one on the road after midnight Richard. Am I right Optimist?
I think we've all seen 58's dotted around in the last few weeks.

A Scania Double Decker Bus, just after the driver hit a traffic island when turning left - obviously not aware of the extra overhang at the front from his previous 1980s Volvo Olympian! (that was at 5:45 this morning)

A hideous, imported Toyota SUV called the FT Cruiser.
Extraordinarily ugly!
The first 58 I've seen is MR58 EST. I think it spells Mrs Best.
Quite cunning, I think, but personally I don't think the current style of plates lends itself to spelling words as well as the old prefix, suffix or dateless styles.

What car was it on?
It wasn't - the post is an advert.
And finally an answer to the question.....
This morning on the East Lancashire Road near Haydock - BMW 118d.
Havn't seen it yet but a relative picked up her 58 corsa today, she got the trade in valuation on her "old" car (06 plate corsa) done over a month beforehand.
I've not seen one yet as I've been ploughing all day.
I will not be having a 58 plate car. 5 and 8 add up to 13 and I'm superstitious. I know it's daft, but I can't help it.
Was in Liverpool today (after a hideously early start) I was genuinely surprised as to how prosperous the place has become. My visit was to an area of Toxteth ! I was suitably impressed at what an improvement there since my last visit in 1981 (well on had to go and see !). Not the least surprising were the numerous prestige car dealers. Saw a 58 reg Range Rover Sport in white down by the old Brunswick Dock. Lost count after the 58 Toyota Whatever in red in Speke.
Nice to think of the market in Range Rover Sports being held up by yr clients in the tastier up-and-coming parts of Liverpool PU... Long may they remain at liberty and earning...
:o}
I feel a comment coming on - but the Roomie might become a target ! I was there testing my own feelings about a post-retirement career. Very lucrative but risky (said he vaguely)
Down here in our leafy, prosperous (?) oasis in a corner of SE London I am becoming used to being dazzled or half-blinded by the fancy daytime running LED lights of new Porsches and new Audis.
It might be a sign of the times but the only 58 reg I saw on the roads today was a new motorbike. The rider was being very cautious and looked like she had new leathers too.
My dad had a motorbike in the austerity years of the 1950s - a link ?
Motorbikes are no longer an austerity mode of transport unless it was a Chinese/Taiwanese thing.
Quite by chance I drove through Toxteth on that fateful night of the troubles. I was visiting my then girlfriend and had driven from London straight from work and happened to be in a white shirt with a dark tie and was driving a white Cortina company car. To get to gf's house it was convenient to go through Toxteth. Hadn't had the radio on and knew nothing of the fires and attacks on police vehicles etc. Didn't actually run into any bother myself but on reflection driving around there that night looking vaguely like plod........

I was just reading another thread from last January about the CRV. Out of interest, do you have a petrol or diesel CRV? Is it the new shape new model or an older model?
Thanks.

BMW 135i cabriolet today on the M25 near M23 exit...not a bad first one!
I saw one of them somewhere today as well - nice looking motor if a tad expensive.
I saw them early last month on a Fiat, Suzuki, Chev, Ford, Toyota, Mitsi and Vauxall all in Portbury ready to go to variuos Car Hire and Company cars.
In 300 miles of (mainly motorway) driving today I've clapped eyes on:
Nissan Note
Citroen C5 estate
MINI One
Seat Altea XL
Mazda MX5
Scania R420
That's a pretty poor showing for the first day, I didn't spot the first one until a couple of minutes before 12 noon either. I can remember when I was young counting twenty or more new-plate cars on August 1st every year, and I clearly recall two Range Rover Sports and an Aston Martin being in the first ten 56-platers I spotted 2 years ago.

The first & only 58-reg I've seen so far was a blue Mazda 2, along the coastal road in Cleethorpes, yesterday (monday 1st).
Did over 350 miles yesterday and the same today and I haven't seen one yet. Maybe the Northerners / Scots are playing it canny.......
I remember, when I were a lad, during the summer holidays we used to go touring round Europe in a Transit Dormobile camper-van, returning mid/late August. The highlight of coming off the ferry in Dover was spotting the new plates (which changed on 1st August in those days). This was early 1970s!
Reminded me of similar pastimes
I used to do that too when on holiday to Bournemouth with my parents in the early 90's, I was usually the first one to spot a new reg plate on the way down.
I was a passenger by the way!!!
It's the 3rd of the month amd I haven't yet seen a 58 plate on the road.
I'm a failure.
Nor me.
Three days and out in the car on each of them in rush hour but no 58 plates.
Those people have seen range from economical to not so maybe patterns of buying aren't changing but volume is?
A Mazda 2 in a fetching Aurora Blue, first seen when I picked it up from the dealer on Monday morning. Second one was on an Astra about half a mile after leaving the dealer.
Gutted really, as I then realised I was not the only person in the country with a 58 plate car!
A Mazda 2 in a fetching Aurora Blue, first seen when I picked it up from the dealer on Monday morning.
I nearly ended up with one of them... Until I reminded the dealer that I needed to trade my car in ASAP as it's MOT & insurance was up end of August (and it had no brakes).... So I now have one of the last of the 08's instead.
Yep, 3rd today and I've still not seen (or maybe not noticed any)
Adding myself to drbe's list of failures
I remember sitting as a small child all day on grand parents front wall 9 years old and looking out for "J" (prefix) reg cars on August 1st. Oh how that seems so far away
First and only 58 plate I've seen was a Merc Sprinter Luton.
I have never looked at number plates, just at the vehicles themselves. Not quite as triangulated and accurate, but then a bit less, er, anorak too... I could never see the point of collecting locomotive identification numbers either. To me a Castle class was a Castle class and that was all there was to it.
>> I'm a failure.
>>
It's ok, it's ok. I have just seen one. It was a Swift camper van thingy.
So that's alright then.
Phew!..........
Finally seen a 58-reg.
On a MAN truck off-loading bathroom fittings as I was loading up the van with the very same at the logistics depot this am!

Vauxhall Vectra hire car today - knew it was a hire car as a car hire company delivered it to me.
Not sure what diesel it had but a capable comfy motor for a two-hour motorway dash.
Ford Focus seen today - first sighting...
Years ago you would have spotted numerous new regs. on day one of the new plates or in the following few days. From the replies so far it seems rather slow with sales. Proof maybe the dealerships are having a rough ride at the moment.

A Fiat (Grande Punto I think) yesterday
Seen three so far. The first two were Fiat 500s in different places and strangely the first I have seen in the metal. The other was a repmobile - Vectra or Mondeo I think - just a clone car driving down a clone high street.
Still haven't seen one. It's toof oop North y'know.
Saw my first one about an hour ago and was very surprised at what it was.
Not an unusal car by any means, but one of those that when I saw it I thought to myself how rare it is to see a brand new one. It's also the first of the updated models I've seen:
A Landrover Defender
Would have been the BMW X6 I drove today from Bristol to London - except somebody had stuck a personal plate on it - guess what first two digits were --(difficult question!!)
X6
So I still ain't seen an 08 plate.
At last, a 58 plate (Reading area) - on a new Mini JCW in that rather undistinguished shade of cream. I don't think John Cooper works in that colour.
If an X6 is the coupe 4x4 (pointless?) BMW then the first 58 plate I saw was one of those.
I'd like a wee side bet that the X6 will only ever be available on 08, 58 and just maybe 09 plates. I think it will be as "successful" as the Renault Avantime thingy.
I have driven over a thousand miles this week around the southwest
on deliverys and not seen a single 58 plate.Would of normally
seen quite a few new plates by now
Coincidence Shady. I have driven a similar distance and more around Scotland and Northern England this week and nary a one.
A lovely silver Corsa.....
Four seen so far down here in a very wet Cornwall. Blue Polo, red Jazz and two black motors: C5 and BMW 1 series.
Tangentially, I still haven't seen a new model Berlingo in the UK - but saw several in France over the summer. Sales figures in a car mag I picked up revealed over twice as many berlingos sold in june as Mondeos! 208 and 407 at the top of the sales tree.
I saw a motorbike with a 58-reg, couldn't quite see the make thou.
A Dodge Nirto.... not you're every day car... I wish this was a game of top trumps !!
Girlfriend spotted an MX5 hardtop job near the M55 today; that's the first that I've seen... even though both our parents have got new 58 reg's (one in a Suzuki Swift Sport, the other a C30 1.8)
Not seen one yet, although all I've seen today in leafy North Yorkshire is water, water, everywhere.
Saw my first today- on a rental Transit.
But since started working from home, and commute is now walking down the stairs- don't get out and about as much as I used to.
Only seen four so far. One was a MINI Clubman and another a Mercedes ML. Not sure which was the more unexpected.
"One was a MINI Clubman"
Oddly enough - me too - first Clubman and first 58 plate - on M40 Thurs evening
Wonder if they're being discounted ?

Well it's taken almost a week but saw my first 58 today a megane cc just north of York on the a19. Huge amounts of water all around the smaller roads up there not much use for its folding hardtop!
Volvo V50 in light blue, on 5th.
Saw my first one yesterday - some sort of strange looking far eastern thing, don't even know what it was!! Must be the longest I've ever gone before seeing a new reg, though, normally I see them the day after it comes out...

I've still not seen a 58.
Not scientific, as they say, but those seen represent a real cross section of the car market with fewer really economical cars than most people expected, I imagine.
Interesting that lumpy motors are still being bought: X6 and Range Rover Sport.
Surely a white Range Rover Sport belongs to someone in pharmaceuticals?
A Dodge Nirto.... not you're every day car... I wish this was a game of top trumps !!
That actually doesn't surprise me -- have you seen the discounts on those things? In the paper last week -- £25K cars being sold for £13.5K.
Not my cup of tea but if I was in the market for a car of that type, pure curiosity would tempt me in with that saving!
No idea how good the car itself is.
Sales figures in a car mag I picked up revealed over twice as many berlingos sold in june as Mondeos! 208 and 407 at the top of the sales tree.
mlj - what mag was that? And do you remember what place in the sales league table the Berlingo came in at?
it's the weekly french car mag I pick up when over there. can't remember the title but Auto Express might be near the mark. The berlingo was about 20th, interestingly the new Kangoo sold twice as many and was top ten.
First ended up being that midsize Toyota on the M58
I've seen a lot of brand new looking 08's though... Saw a car transporter with about 8 of them on it today... I wonder if people are picking discounted 08 models over 58 ones?
South Yorkshire/Humberside police have just taken a hold of 6 x new 08 Volvo's inc XC70's.
How do I know this?
Saw them today on the A63 at South Cave 'strutting their stuff' going out of Hull.
Lights on no sirens & moving very quickly - 3 in the outside & three on the inside lane as well as being flanked by bike riders doing the 'move the & stop traffic over bit' with a prison truck in the middle of them and the helicopter above.
Obvioulsy escourting somebody 'high risk' to or from the courts or a change of prisons.
2 new Sheffield double decker Volvo buses.
VW Tiguan - the only one I have seen so far. Times must be hard.
Oh yeh - it was parked outside the all girls public school - maybe the recession is not affecting all of us.

At last I've finally seen a 58 plate. Well 2 in fact, both in the car park at work.
Having seen only a handful on the first day, now that a week has passed I have seen quite a few (probably 50 in total). Highlights include a black Audi R8, an Audi A3 cabrio, two Jag XFs and a Range Rover Sport TDV6. So there is some money about, maybe only in the Birmingham area though because that's where I spend most of the day.
The R8 in particular was stunning, it overtook me as I was pulling over on a country lane and the driver gave it some welly. My thoughts were: Ooh, it's an R8. Ooh, it's got 4 exhausts. Ooh, it sounds rather like an AMG Mercedes. Ooh, the number plate says BV58... Oh it's gone. Still smiling :-)

Finally saw one. Monday 8th, lunchtime. It was in a line of fast moving traffic, and I only got a brief glimpse. I think it was a Honda Accord.
And then they followed in rapid succession while I was in Inverness.
2nd was a Mazda 6 tourer/estate/station wagon/whatever.
3rd was a Mini
4th a VW Beetle convertible.
Saw first one this morning - BMW X5.
Nine days is much longer than previous reg changes.
From this in-depth statistical analysis I conclude that when it comes to sales, 58-reg cars have little in common with hot cakes.
A White Suzki Swift. - Looked smart with alloys etc.
At long last I saw one today. An Audi A4 Avant 2.0d Sportline in black. M62 eastbound about 8.00 AM. Looked quite nice if a bit of a clonewagon. Only the one 58 so far though.
Still haven't seen one! And I've done about 600 miles since 1st
I'm going to be driving from Cheshire to Dusseldorf on Thursday and back again on Saturday night.
The route I use takes you through bits of France, Belgium, Holland and of course Germany.
My boredom breaker will be to see if I can spot a Brit 58 ( sounds a bit like a drink when you put it like that ) in each country on the same day.

<<...Cheshire to Dusseldorf...>>
Humph,
About how many miles and how long does it take?
Can't remember the miles without sparking up the Tom Tom but I usually allow 4 hours to the Chunnel from here and four hours on the other side. By the time I get to an airport here and all the faff which goes with it it costs me about 2 hours more by car and I can make my own schedule. Also, I don't have to take my shoes off unless I choose to......
;-)
Always worth calculating the elapsed time.
I once flew from London to Manchester - far quicker by train by the time you've trekked out to Heathrow and got a taxi the other end from Manchester airport into the city centre.
I wouldn't have had a clue about you pan-European journey, but eight hours or so sounds fairly quick to me.
Saw my first this afternoon: Vauxhall medium size hatchback - Astra?
Edited by Optimist on 10/09/2008 at 20:21
Credit crunch definitely taking hold down here in Mid Devon - only saw my 1st one today, 10 days into the month and it was......a solid red Nissan Micra! DB
Saw my second today.
A black Audi Q7 barrelling down the outside lane, spinning Hyundai i10's and Perodua Myvis into the central reservation in its wake, brake lights going on and off as it prepared to fill the rear view mirror of its next victim with nothing but a view of its grille.
If you have a car like that I'm not sure you can drive it any other way. Except when taking the kids to school, of course.

Which great composer wrote, "On hearing the first Cuckoo in spring" ?

Delius or was it Dealers.
