Can anyone tell me the correct spec/viscosity gear oil recommended by VW for a 2005 (55) Golf GT TDI manual 6-speed? I can't find it on the internet and it's not in the handbook. I've been to told to use a 70w80 synthetic; this sounds a bit light for high temps to me. Others have recommended a 75w90. Does anyone know what VW use at the factory?

Thanks in advance. Read more

I bought some Redline MT90 which is 75W-90 fully synthetic for my Passat gearbox. However, I was told it was "snake oil" which put me off using it.

I would like to know what VW use at the factory, but no one seems to know.

On a whim, I looked up the price of this stuff. It hasn't, apparently, changed much in a couple of decades. However, it seems to be supplied in "black" and "clear" nowadays. Is the original honey-coloured gloopy stuff no longer available? Read more

"Clear" Waxoyl is in fact the honey-coloured stuff.

And no, galvanization doesn't prevent rust, it only delays it :-(.

Can any owner of these cars give me an insight into long term ownership. I have an aging VW Polo TDi 90 estate that I'm giving to my wife so I'm looking to replace it. My budget is limited to max 5k. A friend has the current 1.4 PD Polo which I drove 4 up at the weekend and I was impressed at how it coped on some of Norfolks back roads. A good ride and a willing torquey engine.

tintin,

You asked to be informed - I tried out the said Kia Rio today. Whilst it was a smooth quiet running engine it seemed to have not a lot of thrust from low revs. As soon as it reached 3k it wanted to take off. I prefer a more linear torque curve. I was also unimpressed with it paint quality and general overall finish. I suspect it won't be very durable. The salesman wouldn't take any offers on it despite it having been 'in stock' for 187 days!! So on instinct I walked away.

Later this afternoon at another garage I tried out a Citroen Xsara HDI 110 and loved it. It is a much better car has decent stereo and proper climate control so I've bought that instead. Much more my kind of car and it was cheaper too. It will now keep the venerable Polo TDI company.

>'cubic' litre is a tautology! <

Not necessarily - spherical litres look different, and don't pack as tidily in the luggage compartment ...

I have driven many cars this year be it hire cars for business or test drives for a new car.
I did not find one that was as satisfying to hold as that fitted to my ageing Rover 400. They are either too thin, too smooth, have uncomfortable stitching or do not allow a good hand position. That on the Rover is chunky, sculptured, grippy and allows a good hand position. I know it is only a steering wheel but it is the main interface between the car and driver. Is it that modern steering wheels are designed for every size of hand, I suspect so? Read more

I agree with you. I used to have a Rover 400 and remember the steering wheel as feeling just right. None of those in more recent cars has felt as good.

Perhaps I should have clarified that the "373 relay" is the one with 373 actually printed on it.

There's a small ad in Auto Freeway for a 97 Vectra, taxed and tested, described by its trade seller as an excellent run around for £595.

Only thing is, the pic shows the car on the back of a recovery truck.

Hi,
96 Shogun 3.0ltr 24 valve
Does anyone have a diagram or info as to which plug lead goes to which coil pack.
I have a misfire, and previous owner has marked up leads and coil packs with numbers. However, the leads and the coil packs are not corresponding to the markings and if i change so they do, then it will not start.
Before getting technical i would like to eliminate the obvious. It was bought with a slight misfire.

We'll be heading down the M6/M5/A30 to Redruth tomorrow.

I've come to check my 'Just off the Motorway' type book for places to stop, and found that thanks to the gibbons that design/build Renaults, what I have is a soggy mess !

It's a bit late to try and get another copy (and I bet it's one book you'll never find on sale in a Motorway Service station) so if anyone has any suggestions for places to stop for refreshment south of Strensham onwards, it would be greatly appreciatied. Read more

We just ate - found it by accident, we didn't have any guidebook, so just pull off the M5 at the Weston junction and drive round aimlessly whilst arguing whose idea was it and suggesting that as I was driving and she knew where we were and had the map,(and yes, it was her idea) she might like to make some constructive input as to where to head for

The pub was empty when we arrived and I did wonder if they'd be doing food (It is a bit out of the way :-)), and they were. 9/10 for the BLT baguettes. I noticed 'Doom Bar' on draught, which I subsequently found to be admirably refreshing

Hello,

I recently had the brake pads changed at an independent garage but he was unable to reset the service light. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm loathe to pay the local dealer for the privilege!

Many thanks,
