What is it about this country that causes people to pimp the registration plate?!!?

I don't recall this happening in any other European country.

Of course, the DVLA is partly to blame as they make a fair bit of money out of it. But for every £250 that they make it must cost everyone else way more than that to police their correct use.

Personnaly, I think that it looks daft, raises the profile of the car and/or driver and is open to abuse. In a bizzare sort of way, it is another stealth tax! Read more

They are simply inviting the police to pull them over and slap um with a fine as well as finding out they have no insurance or MOT either.

Today, in the Tesco carpark, I observed a guy in a black open top sportscar turn up a one way passage and dart into a mother and baby parking bay. The boot opened and I was treated to a display of modern engineering as a sectional hardtop glided into view and settled in place faultlessly. Very different from the hand operated, fingernail removing, soft tops I was accustomed to. I thought BMW, y?know, bad mannered something etc., but it wasn?t. It was a Mercedes. I saw a DVD of the ?Bullitt? movie and remembered that HJ had described it as the definitive car chase movie. So I indulged and bought it. After watching it I had to agree. I thought that the baddie was the better driver though because the Bullitt character almost lost it a few times.

I think that the Bullit?s car was a Mustang ; how thin those tyres look now.

Can any BR tell me
A. what model the other car was
B. how many Mustangs were written off in the production
C. did Steve McQueen do the driving ?

I've not watched the film for ages but AFAIR there is a quite alarming bit
of axle oscillation on the Mustang in one scene. They should have fitted some trailing
links to the back axle or maybe they hadn't thought of that in 1968?

It's called axle tramp, and real men have so much power they can get it all the time. Coooool

The driver looked like Luca Brazzi, had the forearms of Popeye and the torso of Raging Bull. His voice was like the smoke from a thousand chimneys, and his eyes like bullets. He was master of the 52 seater coach taking us down from the car park 1000 metres up the side of Mount Vesuvius, Naples.

He almost wheel spun away from the car park. Right foot like he had Jacques Cousteau's diving boot on, right palm permanently on the horn daring all to come within 50ft of him.

He hung out of the window and yelled curses and shook his fist at every woman, man, donkey, sheep, pig, goat, dog or cat he passed, he almost power drifted around hairpin bends and overtook timorous tourist coaches he deemed to be too slow, even in places where there was no room, and with on coming traffic!

We thrashed down the mountainside, swaying left and right, tyres squealing, hurtling around bends.......packets of crisps, chocolate bars, apples, old ladies and babes in arms flying around inside the fuselage of the demented rocket.

Finally, we landed at Herculaneum and screeched to a halt outside the station. We clapped and cheered and shook his hand as we got off the coach. Whether out of sheer relief at arrival in one piece, or in admiration of a performance of theatrical bravura.....I cannot say!

Funny what being on holiday does to you. Back home, we would have complained to the bus company. Read more

Can anyone advise me on my m8's old 98 Laguna 2.0 RS auto.
His throttle cable needs replacing and it seems to be a Devil of an awkward job - especially as he is 70 !!!
He's got one off his old Reno, but wasn't able to see how it came apart and the grommet in the bulk-head was a real pig !
Can anyone give him any advice - other than to avoid French cars ?

Can anyone explain why lpg fuel pumps are not all set at the same pressure.
The reason I ask this is having used quite afew pumps Iseem to get different fill levels.
I have 70lt toroidal tank-56lt capacity, only two pumps managed over 50lt and most seem to be 37 to 40lt. As the switch to petrol is automatic I am assuming the gas tank has been empty when I have re-filled.

Ive decided to chop my in for a Daihatsu Charade 1.0. It will be more cramped than my
van for my work gear but by removing the back seats and putting some boarding in there it will be enough.
The upside is £35 a year road tax against £180 and 57 mpg against 38 mpg, plus we will then use this car in pref to the Forester so that we can keep it for when we need it and be able to afford to keep it despite fuel price rises.

Seems to make sense moneywise atleast. Read more

when asked 'what sort of a car should a guy drive' my 23 year old daughter said 'a Focus or a polo'.

Paul,

She sounds like my kinda of gal - and thanks for making me realise what a pulling asset I have parked on the driveway.

Cheered me up, for a Monday.

I had my RAC renewal this week. They needed me to ring them because there was a change in my bank, and gave the number 0870 ......
These numbers are the ones where the receiver of the call makes money out of a caller, and I refuse to use them. A quick search for "Say no to 0870" gives a useful website, which listed several free phone numbers, one of which I managed to use. No-one noticed what number I used.
I believe that we are, here, too ready to allow ourselves to be charged for things such as making a phone call.

I have been refused cover for the above vehicle, 1998 with 1.9 litre engine, 5000 miles per annum. The car is group 14 and I am 19 with 2 years no claims. Current vehicle a 2004 Fiesta 1.25 (group 3) but as I am away at University most of the time I have decided I would like to return to something fun, a two seater roadster. At the moment I am limited in choice to 1.6 litre MX-5 (circa 2000), which will be about £300 a year over the Fiesta, which is fine. Any ideas on how I might get cover on the BMW? Read more

I agree with that comment, with BMWs I think they're pretty pointless without the power - I rekon 6 cylinders is the way. They have a firm ride & the 1.9 has not enough power to have fun. To make things worse the Z3 (all but Z3M) have suspension based not on the E36 but the E30, which is now 3 models old. My friend had one of these and it was a truely horrible little car. OK for a girl though I suppose. I'd rather drive an MR2 mk3
