Road was "clear" at lunchtime but to be avoided as there was a few miles of standing traffic northbound.

Best run I have had for a long time southbound.

Hi

Could anyone recommend a lubricant to use on a suspected sticky brake caliper? Was advised copper grease but subsequently put off it by someone else, so can anyone help?

Thanks

piston power

Which part is sticking the piston or the slides?

If the piston get a overhaul kit or replace the caliper, if slides remove and clean with emery cloth & a little white grease or copper slip so it can slide.

In one envelope (amazing) I received two V11s inviting me to re-tax my vehicles.

M reg 405 TD - £185.00

B reg private HGV Bedford - £165.00

Admittedly the Bedford does far less road miles, but I'm staggered it's cheaper than a car. Read more

Hi guys,

My Espace - 1994 family - J7R 636 injection engine won't start properly when cold.

Misfires during starting when cold and when does finally start it cuts out when I give it any gas and whole car shakes until after 5 minutes it runs ok except slightly uneven at idle.

Looks as though someone tried to remove the Lambda and has damaged the body of the sensor quite badly. Could this be the cause? I was thinking possibly CTS as well?

(has had coolant leak recently)

Anyone got any tips on how to diagnose this?

Thanks

Replying to my own note, and showing off more ignorance than useful knowledge.

My first attempt to identify the temperature sensor got the wrong one. On my 94 2.0i (J636, J7R engine) there are two temperature sensors screwed into the thermostat housing. The one on top has one wire, and feeds only the dial on the instrument panel. The one hiding just under the heater hose, with two wires, part 77 00 737 571, connects to the engine management electronics. On my second attempt I got the right bit from my local Renault dealer.

Car certainly now [1] runs more smoothly. The bad news is that my resistance measurements aren't very different for old and new parts, and I don't think I have a good measure of the temperature. The new part measured

5.23 kilohms at 13 C
4.05 kilohms at 15 C
3.43 kilohms at about 20 C
750 ohms at about 60 C

In case anyone else needs this - it went on with a 21 mm spark plug socket and cost £15 including VAT and a new seal.

Notes:
[1] Actually, until this morning. At the moment it doesn't work at all, because I've been trying to replace the heater matrix: don't trust Haynes for this if you have a right-hand-drive model! With any luck it will work again by the end of tomorrow morning.

Hello,
Does anyone know how often the spark plugs should be changed on this model?

Does anyone know a link to any diy guide..as Ive nver did this before?

Thanks,

Nissan/Renault have announced that they will market an "electric car" in the US from 2010 and in Europe from 2011. Carlos Ghosan says the car will not be boring to drive and they have signed a deal with Israel because that country imposes an import duty of 70% on cars but only 10% if they are electric.

This made me wonder.

What, at a minimum, would an electric car have to do to interest you and not be boring?

And what incentive would assist you in making the decision to go for a greener but probably less comfortable and less enjoyable car? Reduced VAT of 5% on the purchase?

I know tax reductions are not very likely. But just suppose......... Read more

FT, are you not assuming that the car itself, both in terms of the delivery system of power to it, and its own use, is 100% efficient in your calculations?
Besides which the running costs means everything, not just fuel, and I would expect the battery technology to be both less long lasting and more expensive to maintain.

A work colleague of mine has a Renault Scenic, and now that the nice weather has started, she has started using the windows.

Now am not 100% certain of the problem.....but she says:

"When I turn the engine off, the drivers window goes down....the only way to stop it is to open the passenger door"

Anyone have any ideas? Read more

I had this very same problem on my 2000 1.6 Scenic.

The only way I could stop it opening was to snatch the fuse out when the window was closed. I left it with the fuse out for a few weeks and when I replaced the fuse it worked normally again. This lasted for about 18 months when suddenly the same window(drivers door) opened when I started the engine this time. Again I left it for a while and the problem went away again and it's still operating normally now.

I have read in other forums that you can reset the mechanism by operating the window and keeping the switch pressed for about 10 seconds when the window is fully closed and again when fully open. In my case, the first time, I couldn't keep it fully closed because as soon as it closed it opened again. I have however, carried out this resetting every now and then in the hope it will stop it recurring.

A friend has a Seat Arosa 1600cc 100bhp roller skate. It seems solid and goes quite well. It is about five years old I think. He has had it from new.

He is panicking about having his VED doubled under the new rules. He wants to know how to find out what this Arosa's CO2 emissions are officially.

Can anyone help? Am I failing to make use of this site's standard services? Read more

Thanks MW, 158g/km according to that website. And you are right, 1380cc. Quite a nippy motor I must say although I don't like very close-coupled, short-wheelbase cars (handling too quick for me).

Hi
Went to look at a W124 Mercedes 1992 150000 Miles
Had a look around the engine before starting the Car their appeared to be Oil in the Coolant
It's kind of Dark brown but hard to tell the exact color was wondering if this could be ATF fluid as the Temp gauge seems normal with the engine running.
If it's the heat Exchanger in the Rad leaking Fluid in to the Coolant is it an easy Job to Fix
always supposing I can get the parts.
Thanks

I have a 1993 260E W124. They are known as the best Benz ever - very tough and reliable. 150, 000 miles isn't such a big deal. However they are prone to head gasket problems. Compression test?

With the incessant rise in the price of diesel and petrol and the haulage industry being stretched by it how long before protests start ? I reckon in the last few months diesel has risen by £1 a gallon at least. These litres mean little to older folks like me but gallons I understand. Read more

I use my car almost exclusively for business, and the recent price hikes are beginning to seriously hurt. if the government stopped wasting money on stupid junk like the Olympics which hardly anyone wants, I am sure they could easily knock a few pence off a litre.

We are also subsidising rural rail lines that are simply not used. I sometimes have an in-car tea break in the car park adjacent to Milford haven station. Even at five in the evening, which you would expect to be a peak travelling time, a train pulls in and leaves again often with one or two passengers on board. The same goes for the line to Fishguard. A people carrier could replace both lines and nobody would suffer. We are throwing money away to satisfy the green lobbies never ending demands in keeping these white elephants running.
