Yup, Multi-mode automated manual gearbox is best avoided, even Honda and Toyota couldn’t get it right and both gave up in favour of much more robust CVT boxes instead. The later Auris uses the CVT. What is your budget again and where roughly do you live? I’ll take a quick look in your area at what is available and what I’d recommend you look at.

Be aware the Toyota Hybrid is different again. It's called a CVTe but it's actually an electronically controlled epicyclic geared transaxle with an engine at one end and two integrated motors/generators. Very few oily bits and very reliable and capable of star-ship mileages....

Throwaway because I am pressing charges from the person who hit me with their SUV. My life has been ruined since getting run down by a reckless driver, while I was on a motorcycle. I am a young professional (dentist), and because of this accident, I am recovering with my parents. This accident happened a number of weeks ago, and I have life-changing injuries.

I have a loss of motivation to even wake up in the morning. I told my friends that I don't want to see them in my recovery because I am so depressed. I don't want to watch tv, play video games, or even eat. My days are occupied with laying in bed. All I want to do is go back to the day of the accident and never get hit. Read more

I'm sorry to hear of your accident and wish you the best possible recovery.

People are still buying beige cars? I thought that went out of fashion by the mid 1980s. That, and brown cars and vinyl roofs. Read more

Can anyone help me please. Just over a week ago the heater blower comes on when the engine is started and I cannot switch it off. I can get warm air by turning up the controls and blower works fine but just wont turn off until the engine is switched off and I open the drivers door-strange!! Any assistance would be appreciated. I've purchased a resistor off ebay as a friend says it might be this and this should arrive early next week but maybe its something else that I need to be looking at. Thanks in advance. Spoke too soon!!!! Off button still not working on the control panel which incorporates the slot for the keycard. At least now the blower does not come on as soon as i start the engine and only works when I chose one of the options like auto on, screen heater, increase the blower speed etc. I am now thinking that maybe its the electrical connector at the back of the panel. I seem to recall that there are two connectors and that the one on the right hand side is directly behind the off switch. Could do with some expect guidance before I try and remove the control panel though as totally unsure of what I should be doing. Cheers Tom

Still no joy with Off Switch any ideas anyone. Thanks Tom

Any suggestions as to the cause of an occasional knocking noise from underneath the car when I go over a bump or a pothole? It doesn't always occur, seems to be coming from the RH side (the car is LH drive, manual) and is a heavy knock, not at all metallic. I only hear it at low speed. The car drives perfectly, but because of the snow here, I haven't been pushing it through the twisty bits, so can't tell if there's more body roll than usual.

At first I thought it might be something moving about in the boot e.g. spare tyre or jack, but II've also heard it coming from the front. Perhaps it's always the front, and any noise from the rear is something loose in the boot. This weekend I'll try emptying the boot...... Read more

Possibly broken rear spring near one end - see rust on it.

Hello,

I’m really anxious as I (well, my parked car) was involved in a non-fault accident. Unfortunately, I am still waiting for the third party’s insurance company to admit liability but I’m not holding any hope that that will happen any time soon as it is a bus company and nearly a week after the incident I don’t know if it has even been reported on their end!

I wasn’t comfortable signing a credit agreement to go with a non-fault service, and also I needed my car fixed at a dealer garage to maintain the warranty which wasn’t possible with them (I’ve had it 2 months ), so I went though my own insurance company.

So, I’m having to pay my excess... £400 is a lot of money. When I took out my insurance I opted against motor legal.. because I was naive and didn’t understand it. I never imagined paying my excess when it is so clearly someone else’s fault (witness, lots of photos etc as proof). Should have researched it but I hope it’s not a mistake worth £400... I’m with Admiral.

However, if they admit liability after I’ve paid the garage for the repairs (my excess only, insurance company covering the rest), I’m told I will have to seek to reclaim it via my own means and at my own cost or through Admiral law, who would take a chunk.

Basically, I’m told that because I don’t have motor legal, I’m screwed!

Does anyone know what my rights are in terms of recovering this “uninsured loss”... I don’t understand how it works... or when or if I might ever see that money again. Thankfully my NCD is not affected! Read more

FB's plan sounds a good one, as said you will get a better response goodwill and outcome by allowing the company to have some control of their own costs in this case, using an accident/credit hire mob will not work out any better for you and has the grave possibility of biting you in the back side in the future, taking a £1200 total claim up to £7500 by hanging repairs out as long as possible whilst a high end car is 'rented' out at extortionate rates is of no benefit to any party here in the long run.

My unfortunate bus at fault experience was really compounded by NU, who also insured the bus company....

My son paid £6k for a car last week, a 2010 golf with 77k miles. He bought it from a motor dealer in London.

His wife drove it down to my family in Wales, and on the 2nd day the car wouldn't engage D or R (auto-box)

He contacted the dealer, relaying the issue from his wife.

Unfortunately the issue has only worsened, and he decided, rightly in my view, that he was rejecting the car under the consumer rights act 2015 as it was less than 30 days old, and informed the dealer of this via email and phone-call.

I am driving the car back to the dealer in London on Saturday morning - exactly 7 days since the purchase.

Since looking at the paperwork with the car, please see link

It seems the previous owner also had a the same fault.

My question is, does this piece of paper go in our favour as proof the fault already existed, or against us as he took the car with that paper in the service book, therefore accepting the fault.

Basically - Do I wave that under the dealer's nose, or hide it?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Two areas to check are the battery compartments. The main 12v battery is under the driver's feet. Remove the carpet and have good look inside the compartment for water ingress.

There is also an ancilliary battery in the boot, a flap on the right hand side. Again look for corrosion around the battery and terminals.
