Having been told at my last M.O.T that I would need to replace the front tyres for my now upcoming M.O.T in March. I have looked at tyres yesterday and found the exact match at National Tyres which I was OK with the price, this morning I was thinking could I drop down a level in the rating as being in our 70s we would not need such a high spec tyre so I would be making a £££ saving without compromising on quality. This is a just out of interest question that I thought of, As someone might have info'. thanks. Read more

Once again, John, the problem is that whereas you are an experienced engineer .......

You flatter me, Avant. I am merely an amateur mechanic. I have no engineering qualifications whatsoever beyond three science 'A' levels obtained in 1967 plus the experience of maintaining and repairing (when within my capability) my cars since then. It just saddens me when people who can least afford it are frightened into needless expense by an often overcautious and sometimes rapacious motor industry. ...

Forget main dealers or backstreet garages and seek out a genuine auto electrician who’ll properly diagnose rather than guess and randomly replace parts. It’s unusual for a Mazda to cause much grief here but that’s just luck for you.

This morning I was on a two lane A road, the bus on the inner lane decides to pull out and goes straight into me. Bus company has video footage and claims its all my fault as i was "driving like Lewis Hamilton" - I simply wasnt, was going same speed as bus who pulled out into me, I never deviated in my progress in outer lane.... Hi there

We have a Nissan Micra on hire for a few days. The agent will pick up the car tomorrow and has asked us to lock the car with the key under the drivers mat. They will come along with the spare key and unlock the car and go.

I have no idea how to do this and hope someone can please advise as hire company office is now closed.

Thanks in advance

Can you unlock the boot separately from the rest of the car doors? As I found out to my cost, on my mid 90s Micra (no central locking or blipper on that car), I could easily lock myself out my putting my keys (in a rucksack at the time) in the boot and shut the boot lid, which automatically locked, unlike my current Mazda which is central locking (all or none) only.

It is probably a stop/start battery which can be very sensitive to loading. You are assuming this is the battery originally fitted to this car from new . It is very possible this battery has been lifted out of a different car, could be older .

I have a corsa D 1.7 cdti 2009 with loss of acceleration (won't do over about 2600 revs) and engine light on. The car also stalled twice after cold start. I have taken it to my nearest open dealer here in Ireland. The 1.7 cdti was not sold by open in Ireland it's a UK spec and registered car. The car has been with the dealer a week now and they suspect either the ecu or the wiring may be at fault. I am thinking this could be a very expensive repair and the car is not worth that much. Does anyone have any experience or advice to offer me on this corsa issue? Thanks Read more

I would not have thought the ECU repair was not as expensive as a new EGR and a new exhaust ,maybe wrong..The garage has obviously done its homework rightly or wrongly.they are looking at the car not us.

Have you had it read for any fault codes? A number of engines won't put on an engine light when there's a fault.

And most reputable firms won't even attempt a remap if there's any faults (to cover their back)....

Whatever you buy try it on the car before you need to use it. I bought a space saver off Ebay that said it was specifically for my car. Luckily I tried it and found that the pitch circle diameter or PCD was wrong and the bolts didn't fit properly. The seller took it back but couldn't find the right one so refunded. However he was still advertising space savers for my car.
