I just bought a new car (well new to me) and it has a few issues.

Basically it reports the wrong temp, the cars running fine and I just fitted a new thermostat like a hour ago and it still runs reports cold however the heating is boiling, the engine has a tapping noise however I have been told it’s just noisy tappets and not to worry unless it’s actually affecting the car, I found mayo on the oil cap so I replaced the thermostat as many people say to do, the engine management light flashes when pushing the engine however the car isn’t running slow or even rough if anything the cars very nippy, no white smoke or power loss however the engine can run rough after giving it a bit of stress and it’s got bubbles going into the water tank however I’m quite sure it’s not losing any coolant and there’s no oil in the coolant.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the car is my daily driver and it works well, apart from the issues mentioned above planning on keeping it for a few years if I get these issues straightened out.

It’s my first car and I am in love with it so losing it would be a real shame.

Thanks for any help. Read more

1) Is there a car manufacturer that has built up a deserved reputation for engineering a DPF system that simply works properly and is never a concern?

2) Same question regards EGR valves (on diesel engines)

3) Is it true that even if a car has a DPF system that satisfies Question 1, the DPF will inevitably eventually fill up with ash anyway, and will therefore need to be removed and cleaned or replaced?
If so, how much does a remove+clean+replace cost?

I do about 24k miles a year, about 1/3 of which are long runs (360 mile round trip), and the rest local journeys, though most of these are more like 3 to 10 miles rather than say 1 mile or less.

I think the problem comes for people who drive essentially the opposite to you, but erroneously think that because they're driving a diesel that it must be more economical on ANY run that a petrol driven car.

Spot on. I went from a 2003 2L diesel to a 2010 1.4 petrol and found I was still getting the same sort of MPG. My first petrol since around 2001....

We have just taken delivery of the new model which is great but we have found some shortcomings that are a safety issue for the person getting into the car unless you guys know better and can advise.

When pressing the request switch (keyless) or the unlock on the fob, all the doors unlock, this is a safety issue for my wife as anyone could be lurking and jump into the car etc. Does anyone know how to programme the fob and locks, it cannot be done from the command screen. This link gives instructions but I cannot get it to work unless I am being thick here www.mazda6info.net/locking_unlocking_with_request_...l... Read more

I don't know about Mazda but on other makes many of these types of features only appear on certain trim levels.

Or "extra" packs!

Good morning, I noticed that there was a blow of white smoke coming from the exhaust yesterday and so; thinking it was the DPF I went into 3rd and rode the car for half a mile at 3500 rpm. I let the throttle go but the engine speed went up to maximum, I pulled over and turned the ignition key to off but the engine kept running at maximum , still blowing out white smoke for about 5 mins. the coolant was blown out but there were no signs of oil in the water or vice versa. The car start with reluctance and seems to lack power as if it is only running on 3 cylinders. Any ideas? Read more

Sounds as if it ran away on the sump contents: probably some damage which only a strip down will confirm the details of. How much was left in the sump after the runaway?

“Nope, I don't agree with SLO on this one, despite his vast experience.

That £700 heap he mentions has nothing in common with the OP's problem.

I've done a 100 mile radius search for Sorentos from 2006 and the average price from a used car dealer is around £3200 with the highest at £5k. The cheapest heap is £1500.”

Point I’m making is that it could be a sub £1,000 heap. Yes if it cost £5k then some recompense should be expected but is not a given. I suspect this will turn out to be a cheaply bought car from a typical dodgy Joe outfit with a warranty worth no more than the cost of the paper it’s printed on and in such a case a cheap 13yr old car cannot be guaranteed by anyone no matter what the law states. Plus that £700 heap actually looked ok at first glance, the buyer genuinely thought he’d scooped a bargain until I got underneath the thing. That said it does drive fine.

I wonder how they prime the pump on a new engine? What if it's been sitting there for more than ten minutes?

If you trawl the internet/ youtube there are a few home-made devices cobbled together to prime the oil pump on this engine....
