Whilst I agree on the whole with HJ's fondness towards the good old fashioned torque converter automatic, being generally much more reliable than an equivalent automated manual such as DSG, PDK, Easytronic, I-Shift etc.. let's not forget there have been some real clangers made!

It concerns me that HJ is recommending the new PSA EAT8, it's somewhat unproven and, well, French cars do have a reputation for slushboxes made of, ahem.. cheese! ... Read more

Forgive me for asking - are you THE Honest John, given on early posts on this website the 'real' HJ posted under the name 'Honest John' and always put 'HJ' as a 'signature' at the end of his post. Just so we don't get confused.

It now being 5+ months since delivery you no longer qualify to reject the car as 'not filt' unless the seller volantarily offers a PX

In any case any qualifying reject/refund would be for what you paid and after 5+ months there would be a fair use charge...

Hi lads.
I am from Ireland and planning to import a vehicle from the Uk in a couple of days time.
My understanding from online research is that I need the V5C form in order to register it when I get it back to Ireland. My understanding is also that the dealer usually fills in some section of this V5C document and sends it to the DVLA (I think indicating that the car has been exported).

To cut a long story short - there is an “optional” admin fee of £200 that the dealer is looking to charge.
Many of the supposed benefits of this charge are inapplicable to me (as I’m bringing the car outside of the uk).
Failure to pay means that I will have to tax the car myself (not a problem) but also then process the V5C form myself.

I’m just wondering if anyone could explain what this means exactly?
Is it merely a case of me filling out some section of the V5C - putting myself down as the new owner and the dealer as the previous owner?

Thanks in advance for any help. Read more

The transfer of registered keeper can be done online. As far as I am aware most dealers do it this way as its much better. You get instant confirmation of the transfer.

So I would not pay £200 for 2 minutes on a computer....

No-one can support vandalism to public property ... but the change in speed limits coupled with more pro-active enforcement is worthy of challenge in a legal way. These changes were stupid and excessive, the existing limits needed to be properly enforced before starting reducing them.

I understand from reports that some motorway toll stations have been damaged too .. shame no-one can find a legal way to copy to Dartford Crossing, especially as it seems that only UK registered vehicles bother paying this charge. ...

Hi all,
Doing the timing chain soon on a Z12XE engine. Decided that I’m going to go ahead and drop the sump to save myself a bit of grief getting the timing cover back on and all lined up properly. The Haynes manual says to disconnect the exhaust where it meets the downpipe on the bottom of the manifold, however is it possible to get the sump out simply by just disconnecting the exhaust manifold from the engine and pushing it down a bit to give better clearance?
Also with regards to the sump gasket the manual says to use a bit of sealant as well along with it. Other places I’ve read not to do this at all. What’s people’s opinions on this?
Cheers! Read more

You can also now get an automotive specialty sealant that doesn't 'ball' if too much is used and some falls into the sump.

Can't recall its name unfortunately....

This decision was taken by JLR in 2015 and has nothing to do with diesel, China or Brexit. What it is to do with is the £120m provided to assist the transfer. This was ostensibly provided by Slovakia but since they are net recipients of EU funds it is simply the dosh provided by EU donor nations' taxpayers (including the UK) recycled from the "rich" to the "needy". The payment got round EU State AId rules because Slovakia is a poor area whereas Solihull is stinking rich. The EU treats its nation states as a single area and thinks it is quite in order to move jobs from the rich to the poor areas.

The EU whilst considered a Socialist idyll by some is all too often pursuing the agenda of big business. The free movement of labour suits big companies who can create factories where labour is cheap, or bring cheap labour in to existing areas where it would otherwise be expensive. That said, it’ll be interesting to see the long term effects of EU spending in Eastern Europe, given that currently we are taking away their skilled labour. And of course policies towards countries such as Greece are often seen as serving Germany’s interests, not those countries. I suppose you could also see the EU as serving the narrow interests of the senior politicians, whereby they create a powerful entity to further their own careers, with little regard for the effects locally.

I've needed to take a few tasks to a machine shop to get welded up. I've been seeing Harbor Freight and Amazon and a portion of the 100$ units or less get incredible audits. This is around the carport sort of stuff like building racking units and such. Any proposals? Read more
