I was chatting to a BMW Mini owner in a car park a few days ago; having noted his new Mini was shiny and my old Mitsi really dirty; I posed the question "How much do you think this has cost me in repairs over the last 10 years".
"£5,000", was his guess.

The fact that it had 16,000 miles between annual MoT tests doesn't say anything about what (if any) servicing has been done during that year. My current car has covered about 18,000 miles in the past year but has been serviced on miles, not time since last service.

In all Honesty I would love to see Thanet Council being more proactive and dishing out more tickets as the standard of parking is absolutely dire.

As usual, it's all down to personal experience NickNike. I have just sold a 22 year old Corsa which had been in daily use by my wife and is still going strong and I use an immaculate and reliable 40 year old Mk1 Cavalier 2000GL , which I bought new in 1978. Admittedly the Cavalier was Belgian-built. Most of the Luton-built ones fell apart long ago.

I need advice.
I’m a private hire driver and operator licensed under My local council.
My car is my business and has a vast amount of investment beyond its market value.
I have a specialist private hire insurance policy.
At the beginning of December I was hit in the side by an inexperienced driver engaged in a dangerous and unlawful maneuver. Photographs establish clear liability.
However, my insurers assigned claim management firm have tossed around for a month and done nearly nothig for me. I didn’t get a rental vehicle until the 27th. They’ve just told me they’re writing my 2010 Top spec 7 seat full size MpV off and are paying me £3000.
This is going to put me out of business.
They’ve told me the money will buy me an identical vehicle.
First, it won’t. Cheapest identical spec at identical age ai can find on average is £7k.
Second, My local authority won’t licence a vehicle over 4 years of age. Cheapest equivalent 4 year old 7 seat full size MPV for my airport transfer business is around £13k plus about £500 licensing fees...
This driver’s actions have literally put me out of business at my expense, and my insurer doesn’t give a toss... they’re stuck on trying to fast track me into accepting £3k plus whatever they can claim for a mild neck/shoulder discomfort. They’re reluctant to even talk to me about loss of earnings.
Surely I have a right as the victim of a non-fault to expect to be restored to full working capacity before this driver’s stupid actions?

If the other driver was totally at fault, you or your insurer should be claiming from their insurer. As suggested, you need a solicitor's advice.

We had two Passat estates, a 1983 GL5 and a 1994 2.0GL. The first went to 192,000m, the second to 242,000. Neither needed attention to the suspension. Possibly worn suspension links? Or loose exhaust hitting the car?

Asking about keeping a Mercedes for another 10 years.
We regularly keep cars for 15+ years (Peugeot 106 crashed at 17 years,Toyota Yaris is 16 years and going strong).
What we find is corrosion of under body is a major issue after about 10 years old - especially the black painted small brackets, exhaust supports and suspension holders etc.. I now place car over a pit every three years and treat such parts with Dinitrol (not Waxoyl which washes off too easily)..
And paint exhaust systems with heat proof exhaust paint. (Our 17 year old Yaris is on its original exhaust)
Yes I know it's obsessive...
