Noticed a a slight knocking noise when steering from the front after my MOT was done. Yesterday I noticed it got worse so I put the front end up on axle stands.

The spring on the right seems loose in the strut, however I can move the top of the strut around also? I have checked nuts on the strut top under the engine bay and they seem to be tight. When the car is on the ground this cant be done due to the weight. The other side is perfect under both conditions. The springs are lowering springs and the shocks look fresh.... Read more

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it is the spring itself, it must be the top mount bearing as its really slack at the top (shock included)

I'd appreciate some advice on which car to replace my MK2 Focus estate that is on it's last legs.

My requirements: Similar size to Focus estate. 8000 miles per year, 10 miles a day commuting, the rest 50/50 urban/motorway. Will keep the car for at least 5 years. Not looking for toys or enjoyment, price and reliability is most important, so been looking at Japanese & Korean. The Honda Civic estate was first choice, but there's limited choice and therefore a premium, so boiled it down to the Kia Ceed and Toyota Auris.... Read more

Think I'd broaden my range of cars to see what else is around for the money you are going to spend. You might be pleasantly surprised.

My husbands car was stolen at the beginning of this month. They keys were on the seat as he was unloading. His insurance has said they will not pay out because of the keys. The car has not been found.

The insurance company have also said "you may also be liable for any costs should a claim arise from any third party losses as a result of this incident. ... Read more

If the keys were on the seat and the driver was adjacent to the car then if you complain to the insurance company/onbudsman you may find your case upheld

I had a friend whos car was stolen from a private driveway, some distance from the road, whilst he was getting a motor lawnmower out of the garage, initially the insurance Company refused to pay but after representations from his solicitor (It was a new BMW) the insurance paid out

I've volunteered to change the front disks and pads on my son's 107 Saturday, never worked on one before.....any potential pit fall's ?

grateful for any advice! Read more

If the car still wears the OE set, chances are they haven't been on long enough to rust solid to the hub, fastest wearing discs i've seen to date.

The family Aygo is now fitted with Brembo discs and pads, which are wearing much better.

I am all set to purchase my first ever vehicle as Honda Civic SE at 26.5k inclusive of all taxes and fees in ON, Canada. I decided to put 10k as down payment and rest would be financed for 4 years at 1.49%. I love the features(Honda Sensing, carplay, mileage etc) and the reliability that Honda vehicles offer. Since this is my first vehicle and I am a new driver, insurance is sky high for me. Almost $325 every month plus with financing cost.

I have a great job at the airport which pays about $2100 after taxes per month. My rent, hydro, internet, phone and groceries is under $850(Don’t ask me how).... Read more

Last summer a friend of mine bought a new car for cash-£18,000. I say new--but in fact it was a five week old second hand(used) car that had done 750 miles. The cost new was £24,000 on the road, thus my pal saved himself £6000 in depreciation....

I'm on my second Voyager a 2008 model with low mileage. And now this one is getting the same fault -- A FLAT BATTERY. On the previous one I installed a "Battery Isolater" this is a device that you fit to end of your POSITIVE lead and then connect to the battery. It has a curled screw which you remove when parking up for the night and replace the next time you want to use the car. Get the item from Spares Shop / Local Garage. Costs less than £25.00. You'll need to open drivers door with -- IGNITION Key --- in order to release bonnet catch. Make sure the one you get screws downward towards battery NOT ACROSS towards battery post -- easier to remove and replace. Chad. Read more

Taxis do many different things. Some go for airport runs and "executive" more upmarket transport and have contracts with various companies.

Not everybody wants to be picked up from the airport in a 2008 407 smelling of sick....

Reading through the long term test reports in November's Top Gear magazine, i came upon the report for the Jag F-Pace being run by Paul Horrel. It centres round something which i'd never really thought about, that of the sensors/cameras/radars, or whatever, most cars have at the top of the widscreen, and specifically, that they need to be re-aimed or re-calibrated during the replacement of the screen. Not only does there seem to be some difficulty in some cases arranging for the work to be done, with windscreen fitters only able to do certain parts of the job, the rest needing to be done by a dealer, but there also seems to be some debate as to how this should be done!.

The jist seemed to be (certainly regarding the F-Pace), Auto Windscreens would fit the screen, but wouldn't do the re-calibration because it is a franchised dealer job, but franchised dealers don't change the screens. So you need to line up the two appointments.... Read more

I am aware of the complications of replacing modern windscreens as I drive an Audi, although mine doesn’t have any of the radar dependent tech. What it does have, however, is an acoustic windscreen and I understand from other owners that the windscreen replacement companies don’t all carry them and some fitters have never heard of them so the chances are a replacement would be a vanilla screen. The car is extremely quiet in motion but I have no idea how much of that is due to the windscreen.

another way is like noise dampening headphones, some cars use a microphone to dampen external noise which I would have thought was cheaper?
