Hello

I’m wanting a reliable relatively nippy diesel hatchback for bobbing to work and back. I’m doing roughly around 1400 miles a month discounting pleasure at the weekends. Does anyone have any suggestions? My budget is around the £5,000 mark.

Thanks

Not idiotic at all. Diesel engines used to have a well-deserved reputation for reliabilty and long life, such as the one in the Peugeot 205 that we got for my wife about 30 years ago. The 1.8 diesel engine seemed a lot more robust than the rather weedy 1.1 and 1.4 petrol alternatives.

But nowadays (in the name of reducing pollutants) dlesels have particulate filters and exhaust gas recirculators which add complexity and can cause expensive problems when a car has done a high mileage....

Back in Dec 2018 I reported that I had an insurance discount for having a Dashcam. What I didn't say was that it was £30, £183 instead of £213..

My old generic dashcam, £14.99 Aldi has given up the ghost... so got a 312g online for £49.95 less a £7.50 nectar voucher that i had.... Read more

Please Help

Have a Corsa 1.3 cdti 08 plate. Bought in July 2017. Ran perfectly until october/november when began to not start or take numerous attempts to start. Only got worse and was left over the winter months with no starting. Taken to mechanic and had new glow plugs, EGR valve, air filter and battery and returned to me still not starting. Around March time the car started to start again and after a month was then reliable again through the summer months starting all the time. Low and behold, got to october just gone and same problems started again. Hardly started over november and december (starts around once every week/two weeks). 2 other mechanics had no idea. Just been seen by another, he has told me the following:... Read more

I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 308. Worked fine all Summer then really intermittent during the winter. No fault lights or codes. Two mechanics also stumped.

Even though it defied all logic and the current one seemed fine, someone on a Peugeot 407 group said they had the same problems and it was the starter....

The radio comes on at random intervals- can make you jump if it was left on loud by last driver, so I think it's dangerous. Dealer can't fix it - they have asked me to keep a diary of when it happens, but it seems completely random, nothing to do with using the touch screen.

Anyone else have something similar ? Read more

Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out what are regulations here in UK (or specifically in Scotland) regarding studded winter tyres? I tried to find out, but couldn't find any definitive answer in official sources.... Read more

Although this is an older post, I thought I'd add my tuppenceworth.

I live in Scotland and routinely use winter tyres (non-studded) hen the mean temperature is below 7 degrees. They definitely make a significant difference in cold weather, not only when there's snow or ice. In fresh snow, the grip is fantastic, and have saved me getting stuck a few times (on the M6 at Shap, incidently). The cost is not much different from normal tyres, I invested in an extra set of wheel rims so just swap them over at the start and end of winter....

  • Hello. Can anyone advise what the original Peugeot OEM battery is for a 308 1.6hdi 92bhp 2010. I've done some research and think it's either 027 or 096 which are different sizes.
What battery would you recommend? There are 440cca, 540cca or yuasa do a £120 battery at 760cca. I have a dash cam running off the 12v cigarette socket and I charge my phone via the socket as well.
For information. The battery was slow to turn over last week and after 7 days parked up idle its suddenly died today and will not turn over at all. On starting I just hear a clicking sound with the wipers trying to rotate when they are not activated
Any advice on how to remove the old battery would be appreciated. I looked but embarrassingly failed to even remove the cover because a could not remove the electrical circuit placed on top of the battery cover.

Eight years life for original car manufacturers battery I think is good going. I concluded the battery is so flat that even trickle charging will put off the inevitable. So got myself a 096 size battery 77ah 780cca 5year warranty £65. Hopefully will give very me another 8years if the car lasts that long. Will fit on Saturday when I have more time and day light (working weekdays).

Hi got a 2007 Vauxhall Vectra Sri cdti 16 valve and I have noticed it using more diesel than it should the computer says 36.7 and that's on a run off about 20 miles , went out to it and started and battery light stayed on although it's had rectifier in alternator , I switched off and started it again and light went out and stayed out? Also when I was driving along in sixth and accelerate it was a bit jerky , read codes and came up with p0621 generator warning lamp fault and p0008 generic engine position performance bank 1 could this be timing issues as it starts ok in mornings thanks Read more

Hi sorted op-com out and connected to car and went for drive and on egr valve settings it said at idle the egr pos command said100% and the pulse rotation was 4% so went out for drive and the egr pos command started to go erratic and went down from 100% but if I took foot off throttle it went back to 100% and pulse rotation stayed at 4% , should the pulse rotation move ?

Hi, local garage has replaced 2 rear all terrain tyres with 235/70 in place of 245/70 to match front. 14mm difference in diameter according to charts. Is this OK - I've read that it might damage the drive train if 4wd is engaged on road. Any advice much appreciated. Read more

That page is American with the possibility of different tyre sizes to British delivered vehicles. The correct size is 245 70 16 or 17 dependant on model

Silly me, I thought the UK was still in the EU. The label "European Domestic Market" must mean something. Anyway, I wouldn't fancy trying to fit 245 70 17 tyres....
