My wife's 308 is currently in a very poorly state at our dealer, following a compression problem in middle cylinder that means new engine is needed (diagnostics continue...)

Car is not yet 4 years old and under 50k, always serviced at same main dealer and still has a little extended warranty left, so am hopeful we'll get the issue resolved. The issue is that my wife has lost all faith in the vehicle (we've had a lot of problems over the years) and is pushing me to find a replacement. I sympathise with her, but without adding a lot of money that's either at a much higher mileage, much older, or more likely both (plus we wouldn't know what we'd be inheriting from the last owner).... As always best advice is to service the car as per manufacturer guidelines.

Except when it isn't, as, for example, with CVT oil change intervals.

As always, the best advice is to maintain a healthy scepticism, especially WRT "the best advice"

Just wondering if anyone can help or has any ideas, I’ve already spend £400 and am reluctant to just keep chucking money at it!
My 2012 Ds3 suddenly flashed up temp engine fault and the fan came on constantly while driving but coolant was fine and the engine wasn’t actually over heating.
As these cars have form, the temperature sensor has been changed including the casing, the water pump is ok, the resistor on the fan has been changed and still it has the fault.
The car isn’t overheating and it drives fine it’s just the fault light is still there and the fan runs constantly. anyone have any experience with this??? Read more

Good of you to come back to report the code is correct.

Poorly Mazda CX5

I purchased a CX5 in July 2018 with 103k on the clock. 3 months later, following a recall, I was told that the turbo had gone. Mazda paid 80% of the cost, and my warranty the other 20%. Phew as the total was £4000.

On a recall 4 weeks ago the same Mazda dealership told me that a cooland leak has resulted in damaging the cylinder head and will cost around £1500 to fix.... Read more

Same old story - unreliable Japanese engineering. Should've gone for solid British workmanship - the Triumph slant 4 in my TR7. Hasn't missed a beat in 40yrs. Merry Christmas everyone.....

No service schedule is provided with the car; so what is recommended at 40k+ apart from simple oil/filter change? Read more

Thanks both. Car is from 3/2015 and now on 44k; and I have always changed oil/filter each year/10k... Obtained svc history from dealer which shows brake fluid chgd at 4 yrs, dust/air - but not fuel- filters and plugs at 37k. Will check on cam/chain which may soon need attention. Happy motoring ...

My new to me 2018 Golf has a leak into the boot. Water is clearly travelling through the rear hatch door handle, behind the rear skin and tracking across the lock into the boot. Googling shows its probably a common failing of a drain pipe costing a fiver. The problem from a DIY point of view is that you need to ease off a lot of fixing clips that are prone to break. So back to the dealer for a warranty repair.

How hard can it be to remove the hatch trim and replace a pipe? Very apparently.... Read more

I can’t understand how a country that built U - boats can’t build a car that doesn’t leak water . All the German car manufacturers seem to be struggling to keep water out . I’ve seen so many models with flooded electronics ( because they locate them under the floor) . The worst one is the Bentley continental , where the main security and start module sits under the passenger seat and gets flooded because the plenum drains get blocked.

I suspect a VW Golf is not designed to sink shipping while submerged.

And how come we had an empire and yet we can’t even manage an indigenous car company? We have to sell them to Johnny Foreigner who then makes the company successful.

Hi All
I would be grateful for any advice on the following please?
I have an Audi A3 on a PCP deal which I am about to hand back under a voluntary termination. I have paid more than half of the total amount so I will not have to pay any more. Given that Audi will not be too chuffed at missing out on the rest of my payments, I expect they will try and charge me for anything they can. I am getting scuffed alloys and some minor body work damage repaired at a body shop. My question is, what shall I do about tyres? The fronts are okay (6 mm) but the rears are 3 mm. The guidance from Audi is they will charge for new tyres if they are ‘excessively worn’ but give no indication what that means. My choices are
1, leave them as they are, they are legal
2, pay for a new pair of Dunlop’s to match the existing ones from blackcircles
3, put the cheapest pair of ditch-finders on that I can find.
I am tempted to take a punt with option 1 but am concerned I will be stung with Audi’s expensive tyres.
I should add, the car will be inspected by BCA representatives.
Thanks Read more

Audi wrote to me and indicated the expected mileage to date, which was proportional to the the age of the contract.

I didn't think mileage was a consideration under a voluntary termination!?

Can two versions of what is effectively the same car be so different or does packaging really make that much of a difference?

Not sure what you are reading into those reviews that i'm not(?), but i certainly wouldn't call them, 'very different' ....

Oh look another facelifted identicar, maybe its got more camp leds than the last one, might be able to distinguish it from the millions of other cloned hatchbacks on the road.

"That and the huge list of faults generally on VAGs."

It does beg the question, what's up with VAG these days? We've had several in the family but a long time ago, in the days when the engineering was simple. All were excellent. We've not had one of the newer models, I admit....
