I was driving down a dual carriage way around a bend doing maybe 80-85, when I saw above on a bridge a marked x5 that literally had just finished pulling up, I slowed down instantly, windows were all up etc, what’s the chance of them having a radar gun pointed at me? Do they carry them. Read more

Doing 80 - 85 on a bend and either your speed or the curve of the road (or a combination of both) meant that you didn't see the X5 up on a bridge until the last minute?

That does amount to a fairly damaging admission about your driving, I'm afraid.

I have just done something I do very rarely unless it’s spam: I’ve deleted a whole thread.

This forum is NOT a place to trade insults so it had to go. Apologies to those who gave sound advice.

John F was very restrained until he suddenly accused Skidpan of being a family member of mine - the implication being presumably that he was getting special treatment. Tempting as it is, ‘banning’ someone spouting insulting nonsense like that is ineffective as they can simply re-register under another name.

Finally, to anyone who gives advice, but particularly John F, you need to remember that although most regulars on here know enough to understand what you mean, it could be a different matter for Arthur Punter, who has, for example, worn pads on his Vauxhall and is looking for a cheap way to deal with it.. The risk is that he is selective in the parts of the advice that he takes - and that could be dangerous. Read more

You may have good sense on your side some of the time, but it is simply tactless.

OK, I may be tactless but I don't post dangerous advice that could cause owners problems with their cars or in the case of brakes possible injury....

The Stream, from 2003, has been going beautifuly since we bought it in the Spring including a quite long trip to Europe. But within the last weeks I noticed a burning smell and then the other day there was actually smoke coming from one wheel. So it went to my trusted Indy garage and their verdict is that both front brakes are seized and we need new discs + calipers + pads. Ouch!

I wonder what I could have done, if anything, to have foreseen or prevented this problem.... Read more

Brakes seem to be a relative Honda weakness........... When the time comes I am inclined to get a quote from my indie but I am wary of any Honda peculiarites that may make this a false economy. Mention has been made before for example of the Honda self adjusting handbrake that is unusual? .........

I changed front and rear pads on my 6 year old Jazz this year. At 32k miles, all were borderline. It was an easy job and any semi competent individual could do it. The rear disk handbrake is self adjusting and the rear calipers need to be screwed in rather than pushed.. but that is not abnormal... I did of course read the (free) online Honda manual first..And greased all sliders and moving surfaces with non metallic brake grease.

I am a big fan of Suzuki's diminutive workhorse, though sadly i have never been in a position where one would fit in our lives. But maybe some day soon, with the youngest offspring now being 17, we might find ourselves in circumstances where it could!. So in early 2019, some 21 years after the current Jimny was launched (itself just a heavily revised SJ413 Samuri), the new one will be with us. Thankfully the basics are the same, a very small, but very capable and tough 4x4, complete with seperate chassis and proper low ratio transfer box. Here is a link to an article from Car magazine online for those interested.

I'd agree, BBD. I think theat most people wanting a smal Suzuki will go for the Ignis, which can be had as a 4x4 and will no doubt be a better all-rounder unless you go off-road regularly.

Had the following 2 advisories

  • Nearside Rear Shock absorbers has slight external damage to the casing (5.3.2 (b))
  • Offside Rear Shock absorbers has slight external damage to the casing corroded (5.3.2 (b))

I'm planning on getting rid of the car wwithin a few months and wondered how critical these were.... Read more

Why does the advisory have to de documented and written in stone? If my tyres are down but legal I know this. The non mechanically inclined will panic and spend unnecessarily, all good for garage trade.

Has anyone heard of failures whereby you are not allowed to drive your car away from the MOT station and how does this go down with the customer? Where does the MOT station keep all the cars that fail or do they fix them on the day or next day. What is the legal side of driving the car away as far as the MOT station is concerned ,surely they cannot confiscate the car?...

While D segment saloons are dropping like flies it is curious to see that Honda will soon be offering the Civic "3 box" saloon in the UK. This segment of the UK car market went from saloon only, to either/or in the 80s (Belmont/Orion/R19/Golf-Jetta/Volvo 3-4 series/323/ Corolla/Sunny) to hatch-only as the hatchback market "matured", several years ahead of mainland Europe, where booted versions of the Astra, Focus, Megane and C3 and of smaller cars like the Clio, Nova (Corsa Mk.1) always sold well. It took a decade to wean Spanish buyers off the 7 and onto the 5 and Greek car rental fleets are replete with 301s right now.
Many markets have always viewed hatchbacks with suspicion, with the classic 3-box saloon - of any size - seen as more secure (laptop in the boot), stable (less "flexing" of the body) and "prestigious" (An A3 saloon that looks just like an A4!) Are these notions returning to British car buyers' minds once again? Mercedes, Audi and Honda seem to think so!

Engineer Andy

I think this is due to the better flexibility of hatchbacks and the Britishers' love on taking the whole family on a 'back and spade' holiday with the entire boot and back window full of luggage and holiday stuff. You can't do that with a saloon as there's no parcel shelf to remove, even if the boot itself (with the parcel shelf in) is smaller in the hatchback versions.

My Mazda3 saloon (now fastback) is quite rare, and Mazda themseves have reduced the range by knocking out the auto option etc....

I've recently bought the above make/model over the weekend, and appear to be having issues with the bluetooth function.

To be clear, it may not need an update, but a VX dealer will be able to check. The price may put you off though! Have you posted on a model specific forum?

Just a thought. Have you tried connecting an old phone?
